English - The A Class Locomotive was a rebuild of the original Victorian Railways B Class design from the 1950s. 11 of the A Class were built between 1984 and 1985. Originally built for V/Line, after V/Line was corporatised, the locomotives were split into two businesses. V/Line passenger was allocated A60, A62, A66 and A70. V/Line freight was allocated A71, A73, A77, A78, A79, A81 and A85.
The V/Line freight was sold off to a company called Freight Victoria which in turn changed it's name to Freight Australia. The current owner Pacific National last ran the A Class in May 2014. All of the locomotives still wear the green Freight Australia livery with the Pacific National name placed over the Freight Australia name.
The locomotives were used extensively on the broad gauge network here in Victoria. This presentation features the locomotive on a few different freight workings either leading the train or as a trailing unit.
Some of the locomotives are in the process of being parted out for useful components and scrapped.
