Avatar: Three Characters That Went Insane

When it comes to crazy, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra surely have a few of them. These characters who either lost their marbles due to traumatic events, or might have been born that way, are sometimes navigating a grey area between good and evil. After all, each of them have their own reasons for acting the way they do.
Princess Azula has been pushed into becoming an unstoppable firebending prodigy by her father the Fire Lord Ozai, while grew distant from her brother because of the love her mother Queen Ursa had for her son, while being literally terrified of her own daughter. A few events throughout her life caused her to totally go nuts by the end of the series, and even in the continuing comic book sequel. When it comes to the bloodbending Hama, she used to be a waterbending fighter from the Southern Water Tribe until the Fire Nation attacked repeatedly, bringing the number of waterbenders down to zero. Her life completely changed when she was captured by the Fire Nation and forced into a cage for years. This led her to a path of insanity and vengeance as she terrorized a Fire Nation village, becoming a legend herself. Bumi is a bit harder to pinpoint, he might have just been born crazy, as Aang called him a mad genius when they were just boys back before Aang disappeared and became frozen in an iceberg for a century.
In today’s video, I will look at how these three characters completely lost their minds.

I have always felt bad for Azula, she was used as a weapon and not loved by her father. Her mum didn’t show her any love and she’s just 14. She isn’t evil cause she wants she’s evil because she wants to make her father proud.

@@kingkrispy806 it does, she was born as a normal person but growing up her mother didn’t love her, a mother is the most important thing in your childhood. Because her mother didn’t love her she desperately tried to gain her fathers love. He made a bad impact on her and showed her that using her as a weapon was “love”. He “brainwashed” her and used her as a weapon and never cared for her health. This led to her being “evil” to impress her father and not because she was born like it

@@zavear00 Her mother did love her, just wasnt as affection towards her, and thats because azula was always doing the wrong thing and not listening to her mother. How is ursa going to show affection if azula never listens? Azula didn't try desperately to gain anyone's love, nothing indicates this in the show. Ozai notices azula's abnormal behaviours and sadistic tendencies and took that to his advantage and used her. Im not denying that ozai had an impact on her, she would be a lot better without him. But lets not deny she had a slight bend towards evil which is why it was so easy for ozai to use her

@@kingkrispy806 no Azula said herself, “my own mother thought I was a monster” or “she loved zuko much more then me”. This is why she behaved as she did, to draw her mothers attention towards her. Maybe Ursa did love her but she didn’t show it. Ozai made Azula cold. None is born evil, since ursa didn’t show any love she turned to her father and that’s why she is like that. When we hear about her younger years we can hear that she talks about how her father took more care then her mother. And she’s just 14 she isn’t evil she’s confused and broken

I mean, if you think about it both of her parents are at fault. Ozai used her as a weapon but her mother who should have helped her not be a monster treated her like one, and then ran away abandoning both of her children to move in with her old sugardaddy.

"She could have been guided by the people around her." That wasn't possible, especially with ozai there. ursa tried her best to teach her right from wrong but she never listen. for iroh, his words would never influence her because she always thought of him as dirt. "I think you are the type of person that believes that "a person is born to be either good or evil." When talking about Azula, I believe that it was both nurture and nature that shaped her to who she is, If you read my first reply to the original comment you would see that I said that ozai honed her evilness and made it worse

I know that blood bending is bad , but Hama could also have extracted the water 💦 out of the bodies of the soldiers dehydrating them do death 💀! Sounds dark but she could have shown her sell mates and break all of them and defeat the fire nation.

For King Bumi, I don't feel like the trials he made Aang go through were unusual or random I'm guessing that he was testing Aang on whether or not he mastered the 4 elements during his time gone (assuming Bumi knew Aang was the Avatar since they were young) The first task was to retrieve a key in a waterfall where Aang could have just waterbended the water to get the key The second task was to retrieve Flopsie where Aang could have trapped it by using earthbending (like a pit or walls) For the the last task, the arena was set up to look like an Agni Kai where I'm assuming Bumi wanted to see Aang's firebending Sure, he's a crazy old man, but I'm sure he too has been wondering for the past 100 years what his childhood avatar friend has been up to and lol he had a strange way of figuring it out

I don't think Bumi lost his mind, he just thought society and social rules were boring. He decided to just do what pleases him, and is a lot smarter and tougher than he looks. Be crazy, be like Bumi. Be yourself.

I know that Azula was portrayed to a cold, motionless human but when she finally snapped and began crying I did too because I am so damaged like Azula is but my damage comes from childhood trauma of being molested from age 7 to about I was 10, I was born very autistic(I have been diagnosed with a bit of everything in the autism spectrum) to say the least of my problems I also have OCD and I'm a tiny 4ft 6inch lesbian. Issues, right.

Zhao got trapped in Spirit World and since he killed the Moon Spirit, he got punished by The Spirit World to try to find what he obsessed of and he will never get out forever. That's why he mistaken Tenzin as Adult Aang.

Hama was a little crazy, but she was mostly terrying. Taking revenge in non-military villagers was dumb (supposing they didn't support the firelord's reign), but her life goal of teaching blood bending had massive success, by genius means.

Another thing about azula is she also lost it when ozai Didn't take azula to comet plan. The reason I believe is ozai lost a little trust in azula too. Because she lied that zuko killed ang so she wouldn't be blamed if avatar survived. Consequently aang did survive and zuko revealed that azula lied to ozai . That's I believe ozai lost some trust of azula and he didn't take her. This is also another reason she lost her mind.

Many people think Azulas flames are powered by sadness. And also Zukos fire is powered by anger. Azula was just broken. She was manipulated, betrayed, not loved. I feel bad for azula. Although, her father “loved her” as she thought. While fire lord Ozai never loved Zuko, their mother was trying to fill that in for Zuko with care (I think I missed some things)

I feel bad for Azula, she was used as a weapon, Ozai only cared and took care of her to make her a weapon, the strongest weapon. When she cried after seeing her mother in the mirror she realized that she misses her mom and that Ozai turned her into a monster which led to her mental breakdown before the fight. Edit: She also cried after seeing her mother because she realized she had turned mad

Seeing as Azula is written to have very specific symptoms that are applicable to real world disorders, it actually kind of bothers me that you keep referring to her as ‘nuts’ or ‘gone to kookoo town’ like she’s the Joker after falling into acid. Bumi is a good example of ‘cartoon/fiction crazy’, Azula’s not.
