I'm convinced most manufacturers do range testing downhill with a tailwind! Sometimes you can tell they are pulling your leg just by the math. Excellent video, and all good points. My first on turned out well because I checked what was allowed where I planned on riding, made a list of needs, then looked for a bike that came closest to my target. For DYI builders and upgraders, pay attention to controller efficiency. I had a 22 and a 35amp controller from the same company, and the efficiency of the small one was terrible because it had a single stage output that got 30% less range. Thanks for the video!

I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s just formula driven and they don’t do range testing. They had a 150 lb person do it once on a closed, flat track, do 12 mph until they ran out of juice, came up with range/Whr, and multiply that by whatever the Whr rating of this new bikes battery is. But yeah, it’s inflated because it’s a light rider going a constant, slow speed on flat ground.

While shameful, you will be hard pressed to find a company that doesn’t test under favorable conditions. That why it’s good for consumers to able to find videos that review products.

Great video as always. I highly agree with focusing on quality over price. I was exactly in the same mindset as you mention, "I'm too broke to buy cheap". I didn't want to risk things breaking in advance, so I went with a Trek Verve+ 1. Its held up fantastic even despite a couple wipes on it. But the brand is less of my point, moreso that I went with a quality bike. Its my favorite activity ever to ride it! I went with a lowstep step-thru model as well, since honestly I hadn't rode a bike in years and I'm not really sure how to even get on a step over bike. Now I know the step-thru models are perfect for me! Keep up the great videos ❤

Good info. I’ve been on some trails recently with hills that made me want to speed up my timetable for getting one. Got my eye on three different bikes. Weight is a major consideration for me as I currently live on the third level of a condo complex. Funny story… I was riding a trail yesterday with my 360 camera fully extended, holding that 9 1/2 foot tall stick in one hand and two women that were sitting on a bench asked me what that was. I told them, and one of the ladies said, “Oh, I thought it was an antenna for your e-bike.” 😂

Thanks so much for watching Scott. One of these days, we’re gonna get down to the swamp rabbit and let you try out one of our E bikes. Or if you ever decide to do some trails in the Raleigh area, we would be happy to meet you somewhere and let you try them out there. I think you would very much enjoy my trek bike. Again, thanks for watching and for continuing to keep my bucket list filled.

Go with a bike that has branded components. It’s easier to find parts when the time comes. Be prepared to become a self (u-Tube) taught e-bike repairman/repairwoman. Definitely a 30 mile ride as a benchmark. Very nice trail you two are riding. Another well done video. Thank you.
@southernebiking
@southernebiking 29 дней назад
Thank you so much Bob we very much appreciate it, and thank you for watching. Getting branded components would be a biggie for most folks. Honestly most of the parts come from one or two manufactures and they may not be branded but others will fit. But you absolutely need to know exactly what you’re doing to get the correct specs. We are blessed with the trails we have in central North Carolina. I can tell you that. Enjoy the rest your evening.

2 years ago on leaving the hosp, needed a mobility scooter to get around but hated the idea with 4 wheels, heavy & expensive. Decided on either a Lectric or Heybike fat tire folder instead. The Heybike was $100 more but had 4 head bolts for a needed basket, had a rear rack, had fenders, the battery was on the seat post & not in the frame, & it was the lightest 20" folder @ 66#. My advice for people is go to a bike shop & look & sit on many bikes to find your best fit. I was surprised at how big the 20" folder actually was when received.

I like your topics and conversational style. I swear you could do a great impression of Jimmy Stewart. “Mr. Smith Goes E-biking”, perhaps? Anyway, I just bought my first e-bike last week, after a lot of research. It’s a Velotric Discover 2 in a nice red color. It’s a step through, so I can load up the back rack without wondering how to get on. I bought a second battery, so I can take it in my pannier bags for longer rides. I don’t have a tow package on my CRV, so I’ll have to ride this one from home. I considered a folding bike, so I could carry it in the car, but I thought I would use it more to get groceries and for exercise. At some point, I may decide to get a folder for a second bike, but I’m really happy with this one. Considered a Radster Trail, an Aveton Adventure.2, a Globe Haul ST, and the just-released Lectric One, thinking about possible uses, but finally settled on the D2. Anyway, in a serendipitous circumstance, one of the two bike shops in town sells Velotric, so I was able to do a test ride. Since it’s a fairly new and in-demand bike, the online ordering was out of stock, expecting a month later. As it turned out, the local shop had my exact bike that would be in two days later. So, I didn’t get the online discount, but they put it together and will do maintenance service, including a tune up, for six months for no charge. So, I feel I really lucked out, especially with the upcoming tariffs, that will probably increase the prices of a lot of e-bikes. Thanks for your videos. Enjoy your ride!
@southernebiking
@southernebiking 29 дней назад
Thank you very much and thank you for watching. Congratulations on getting your bike. Velotric seems to be a pretty decent bike. Of course it’s always good to have options of where to go. If you need anything, even advice. As far as Jimmy Stewart goes, all I know is, I would rope the Moon for that girl of mine. Enjoy the rest of your evening good sir.

This weekend we rode from Shelly lake out. When we shot this it was last weekend. We try to keep about a week in front of ourselves for the videos. That way if we have to make a trip or something and cannot do any we still have a couple of videos to fall back on. Raleigh area definitely has a ton of good bike ways to ride. We have the majority of them mapped out, but are continuously finding new ones. Thanks for watching and maybe we will run into each other out there at some point on the trail.

People have to do their research for sure. Lots of the reviews are sales pitches, as you say. I put a lot more stock in people who are not bulk reviewing items, and especially when they do ongoing reviews (ie 500 mile review, 1,000, etc.). Like with anything, it has to be unbelievably bad to be bad immediately after purchase. Lots of reviews are on bikes they have not ridden more than 50 miles and never will because they are on to the next thing.
@southernebiking
@southernebiking 29 дней назад
Yep doing some research and lining ducks up is always a good thing no matter what you are doing. I hate to say it, but even some of the long term reviews can be filled with incentive to become a infomercial. That’s why I soon as we started getting a few of these we decided we won’t go that route. I understand. I am not saying everyone is like that. But a lot of these companies have found that their marketing is better spent by purchasing a sales person on RU-vid, then to open a brick and mortar store. But once you get to know, some of the folks, you know who is looking out for your best interest. Thanks so much for watching and enjoy the rest of your day.

Re: Mileage, mine was advertised to go up to 60 miles. I barely get 25 on PAS 3 and 4 and always pedaling. Zero throttle. 165 lb rider and no hills. Also avoid 36 volts, they still make them.
@southernebiking
@southernebiking 29 дней назад
Thanks for watching Pedro. You are correct. You can typically figure about half the mileage. I’m not necessarily against 36 V. Just depends on what type of bike it’s on. Example, many of the top-of-the-line Emountain bikes are 36 V. We almost bought a truck rail 9.8 this weekend. if it was not in a small size, I would be riding a 36 V. Lol at least off the road. Enjoy the rest of your day.
@ziploc2000

Here's the thing about range. A battery will have a WattHours rating, my initial battery was 720Wh. That's a full tank. On PAS 1 my bike self-limits to 104 Watts output. So I can pedal at any speed but whether I'm going 15 or 20mph, if I'm in PAS 1 I'm only using 104 watts of electric help. At 15mph , if I could pedal continually until the battery was dead, for nearly 7 hours, that's 103 miles range. But if I was pedaling at 20mph, still for 7 hours, , that's 138 miles. On PAS 2 the limit is now 265 Watts. So now at 15 mph I drain the battery in only 2.7 hours, and now, all else being equal, 40 miles range. I haven't figured out the Wattage for PAS 3, but if it's the same ratio PAS 3: PAS 2 as it is PAS 2: PAS 1, then it's around 675 watts. But that's the limit, and now I wont hit the limit unless I'm pedaling faster than 20mph (and I can get assistance to 28mph). They're always going to state the range based on PAS 1, but even that is subject to how fast you pedal, how often you freewheel, etc.
