Let's take a look at the back end of the Backcountry Bogey's Garmin G3X Touch setup. The configuration menu can be a but confusing so I'll walk you through some gotchas.

Hell of a learning curve but worth it. So many advantages over steam gauges. You're the right guy to walk us thru the ins and outs. Thanks.

Flew up to kmpj for weekend and internet is kinda spotty. Finally got to watch. Thanks for info! Can't believe I missed the w&b in configuration mode! Got it set up and now no more paper and pencil w&b! We had problems with ap when we first test flew the plane. Took me 25 hours before I figured out I had trim servo configured backwards in g3x. Plane would hold altitude for a little while then just nosedive. Evidently it's an easy mistake to make. It sure does make xc flying more enjoyable. 😂

Oh wow, I wasn’t aware of that issue but glad to be aware of it. Thanks! Yeah I can’t wait to get that hooked up and take this baby on the road!

Did you figure out why it shows only 2 engine cycles when you have more flights than that? Try waiting until the counter counts up by one before shutting off the master switch. Seems to take about 10 seconds. I’ve noticed missing cycles when I power down “too fast” after the engine shut down.

I would like to replicate your avionics system on my RV7, could you please provide the details like schematic manuals. Thanks

Don’t bother, this is old technology. 10 yrs old. Garmin has a lot of fundamental flaws but they sell them as features. Most people don’t know because they grew up flying Garmin. Way too much button pushing to accomplish a test. Go fly with a Garmin system and ask the owner if you can try to figure it out on your own. Not very intuitive and the docs are awful.

@@CliffordStaley you are obviously not knowledgeable about Garmin.

I’m sorry you have a bad opinion of Garmin. I couldn’t agree more with your assessment. I fly a lot of airplanes and I chose Garmin FOR all the features and capabilities. In fact, they continuously add features to the firmware. I’d love to hear a few SPECIFIC examples of flaws. Please back up your subjective generalities.

@@CLEAREDDIRECT I’ll give you one example, maybe two. Ona recent flight to practice an approach the weather deteriorated. I select direct to my home airport made a 180 and started heading back. As I got closer to the original leg the direct to route was replaced with another 180 back to the original selected airport. IMO direct to is absolute. On calling Garmin they informed me I needed cancel approach. Another Garmin tech support said I had to use the bezel go to. So two different answers. I tried both and it was repeatable. Number 2, look at the g3x screen. There is a lot of space around the primary display. More horizon than need. On closer examination it’s the same size as split screen. Why is that. Because they didn’t want to rescale the screen just move it over. If they rescaled it the little dinky indicators it would be more visible and safer. Why didn’t they. Not enough horsepower to do primary display and process screen. When you get your PhD in computer science and have managed thousands of engineers we can speak in even more detail.

I’m not sure you can get anything when the can buss fails
@CLEAREDDIRECT
@CLEAREDDIRECT 4 месяца назад
Sure ya can. I have backup serial ports from GPS and GEA to G3X. Tons of redundancy here. But that gives me a good idea for a test/video. Intentionally FAIL the CAN bus and show what I lose/have. Thanks!!!

@@CLEAREDDIRECT I lost my can bus and there error is quite weak. Reported magnetometer failed, then reported adahrs failed. All the while G3x was red x’d. I don’t believe the rs232 is a redundant backup for the can bus. It may be configurable for either or, but I doubt that is allowed. That would be a major alteration to the physical layer communication with a completely different stack for data. The only thing that works when the can bus is down is the gps as it comes in through a different input. It then send that info via the can buss to the g3x and to g5, the g5 is communicating alt and heading back through the buss to everything so the g5 is dead, even the Al is dead. No adhrs no ap. There is no redundancy of the network, only the equipment and it requires a single point of failure component, albeit, wire doesn’t fail much.
@CLEAREDDIRECT
@CLEAREDDIRECT 4 месяца назад
Partially true. The RS232 lines provide redundancy for limited items, not the entire CAN bus. Since you lost your attitude indicator, it sounds like you don’t have a backup line for your ADAHRS. I’ve got backup RS232 for ADAHRS, GEA (engine data), GPS (GNX 375), and G5 (so I have double redundancy for attitude and pitot static data). Theoretically speaking, I’ll only lose my remote radio (#2), remote audio panel, and autopilot if my CAN BUS dies.
@CliffordStaley
@CliffordStaley 4 месяца назад
@@CLEAREDDIRECT so I didn’t loose my attitude indicator, I lost my can buss. I was told it’s one or the other. So are you saying you have tied the can buss between equipment and the rs232 and they will revert to the one working? How did you kill the can buss to test this?

So don’t confuse “fly off” with task-based. The old 40 hour fly off is still an option for you. But if you want to (and you DO want to) use the “task-based” option, it’s spelled out in AC90-89C. As I work my way thru, I’ll be posting more videos in a “task-based” playlist.
