RSPW Rewind takes us back to December 1997 and back to back nights of rioting at WWE events, first in Memphis, TN and then in Little Rock, AR, and both nights involving Shawn Michaels and DX. Solomonster gives the back story on what happened, then finds some newsgroup posts from the time, including from one person in attendance at one of the events. Was HBK to blame for walking out on the main event both nights, or does the blame rest squarely on the fans for throwing debris at the wrestlers?

If it was anyone else not named Shawn 'Golden Boy' Michaels, apart of the Kliq or basically being someone who Vince doesn't care for despite a good number of fans liking said talent that did it, they'd be out of the company first thing. Speaking of that ECW comment... I would loooove to see Shawn Michaels work in that company as apart of it's roster. Not because of his DX gimmick or being a good performer but just to see him trying to pull the shit he does in the WWF backstage. Boy, would he be in for a rude awakening of a lifetime.

Why? What would ECW fans do? They I mean didn’t they pretty much destroy the ECW arena every night by just throwing shit everywhere? ECW had a hard-core wrestling team but their fans were still pretty much nerd bass fans. I don’t ever recall anyone on the ECW roster getting their ass kicked by fans.

I'll be honest, Jason, think it was your addition of the rimshot is what made me laugh at the Shawn Michaels joke. 😂 Also, do agree, you charge at a wrestler, they should have the right to defend themselves, just like anybody else out there. And loved your reference about the Onion Boy at the end, and totally agree with that. 😉

I remember WCW fans used to throw garbage on Nitro. Scott Hall got hit with a cup of soda and he just slicked his hair back with it.

went to a WWE houseshow in 2005, the main event was Eddie vs. JBL some jackass jumped the guard rail and got in the ring.....JBL was there to greet him with about 6 solid head and body shots before security dragged the clown off

There’s video evidence of the Boston one, and oh boy, it was bad. It was definitely a battery thrown and Shawn was so pilled up it took a few seconds for him to even react to it. I think HHH even said at that point he and Chyna were accompanying Shawn to the ring as his handlers basically. Early case of Vince being out of touch and not realizing Memphis were notorious old school marks who still believed wrestling was real

I was there at the event in Memphis. It was crazy. WWF/E didn't come back to Memphis until the St. Valentine's day massacre on 2/14/99.

I was there that night in Little Rock. The card was nothing like they said it would be, matches were short and people were getting pissed that they paid money to watch it. Not sure who all thought it was a Raw, I certainly knew it was a house show. And yes, Shawn was hit, but with a piece of balled up paper...PAPER. Now do understand that at the time Barton Coliseum was in a very bad part of town during a rough time in LR(gangs, murders, etc)and people (me included) had to drive into these bad neighborhoods to get there. So I saw why so many were upset. But, do remember that this was an edgier product which lead to fans who thought they could get away with more. Anyways, first and only wrestling riot as a fan, event was bad but funny to think people still talk about it.

It's not his fault if some fans were creating an unsafe environment for the performers. Michaels may have been less than professional in a lot of respects, but the moment he (or anyone else on the card) is struck with something, no matter what it was, he had every right to refuse to perform IMHO.

Yo Solomon, my buddy asked me, if I can make a movie of a wrestler, wrestling event, or wrestling headline, what would it be? I thought about this for a couple of minutes, thoughts of Chris Benoit, Montreal Screwjob, Monday Night Wars, Owen Hart, CTE, NWO, etc. ran through my mind. Then I was able to pick one. I picked Muhammad Hassans 8 month run in WWE. Going from massive heat to being released. Then he walks away. For some reason, I think that movie would be pretty damn good. So now I ask you, if you had to pick a wrestler, story, or an event and made a movie about it. What would you pick?

You definitely have the right to throw something at entertainers but you also have the right to get your ass kicked for it. I don't think they should necessarily be powerbombed but more should happen than sending the fan out for it. I live in BC and not long ago, Roman Reigns was pegged in the head by a MitB replica briefcase and I was sickened by it. I despise Roman as a character but would only ever heckle him for it unless he pulled the crap Shawn apparently pulled.

I believe him but he worked in a very different era, and IMHO it's unreasonable to expect anyone, wrestler or not, to put up with abusive, and especially dangerous, behavior by the fans. Boo all you want, but don't assault the wrestler, go over the rail or throw things.

I agree. If you jump the barrier and get into ring, you are fair game to get your brains beat in. As a wrestler, you don't know what kind of psycho the person is, so beat them down!!!
