Welcome to my build series of the Balsa USA Stingray RC plane kit. The Stingray 120 is a great trainer and sport rc plane with an 83-inch wingspan and powered by a DLE-20 RC gas rc plane engine. I will be using a Futaba transmitter system with with Futaba or Hitec servos and receiver. This plane is designed for .80 to .90 2-stroke glow engines, .90 to 1.20 4-stroke glow engines, and 15cc to 30cc gas engines. I will be using basic techniques of building rc plane balsa kits (or at least the techniques I have learned to build rc planes).
All of these videos will be placed on a playlist.
In this video I show how to install the landing gear on the plane. I decided not use the wire landing gear supplied in the but to you a carbon fiber landing gear from Flight Model. The Flight Model carbon fiber landing gear comes in different sizes. Here I am using the LGZX260#26CC-CF1 model number. In order to install the Flight Model landing gear, I have to modify the landing gear mounting plate. I use a piece of plywood cut to fit and I use machine screws and tee nuts to attach the landing gear.
I have been building, flying, crashing, modifying, and repairing radio control planes (RC Planes) for many years and enjoy sharing what I do with the radio control plane community, so I started RC Plane Tech channel for fun. I am not an expert, there are many different techniques when building radio control planes. A good way to learn about flying and building rc planes is to see what others are doing, that's what I do and that's why I like to share what I do.
Thanks for watching my channel. Hopefully you will find my videos a little interesting and perhaps fun to watch.

Well done. I really appreciate your attention to details and the extra effort to make pieces fit together well. You are making me a better builder. Thank you

Nice work! I like to replace piano wire gear when I can too. Getting a decent sander should be one of the first tools we builders should get IMO. You can fine tune the fit of parts.

Been watching the building, not to mention, the plywood direction on landing gear may split ,due to parallel, i usually put any type of material at 90 degree when installing landing gear ,hopefully your plywood does not split watching since the first duild log nice craftsmanship, Eddie

Thanks and hopefully the plywood won’t split. I always thought plywood was laminated with thinner wood set at 90 degrees to each other?

James, nice job! I see you got yourself. a Wen sander and jigsaw! I bet it made making that landing gear block a little easier, put on sander, check fit, just a little more on the sander, perfect fit! You are going to love them, particularly the sander. With a set of vernier calipers I can easily get with in a few thousandths of an inch and get very square pieces with the sander. I like freehand and using my eye, the guide never seem square. I also have the drill press and band saw and for about $100 each they are well worth it. If I had to pick one it would be the sander by far, the jig saw, band saw and drill press are tied for second. The jig saw is nice but I got the band saw afterwards and if you need to cut something straight, square or and parallel the the band saw is so nice, quick and accurate.

Ya, I got the sander a while back and jigsaw recently. Im thinking of doing a plane from plans and cut all the parts.

And I have been looking at their drill press, that will be next. They are nice to have.

After the drill press consider the band saw and your done. I would have never thought I needed the band saw after the jig saw but I use it for most cuts where I need accuracy and quick clean cuts. the jig saw is OK for roughing (it’s not that accurate) and roughing out shapes that can be sanded afterwards.

Nice job. I set my Stingray up with aluminum gear from Sig, for a 4-Star 120. I like the carbon fiber better, so I may take a look and see if I can swap it out without too much pain. Waiting for some warmer weather to lay down some paint.

After tearing out my first landing gear block and the gear putting holes in both wings I started using a sacrificial nylon bolts to install gear & wings. Rather loose a nylon bolt than have hours of crash damage to repair.

Wow a lot of work when all you needed was to countersink your outer t nuts at the edge and epoxy in.
@gregadondad

You do that before installing the mounting plate
@JamesRCPlaneTech

That would have been an option. I guess I could have put the original horizontal gear block in and bolted straight to that. hmm, something to think about. Another set of eyes is always helpful.

Having sacrificial nylon bolts is a fallacy. When your nylon bolts break off and your plane noses into the ground and cartwheel down the runway you going to see just as much damage, maybe more. Just learn how to land and avoid damaging your plane is the best advice.
