Don't let the numbers fool you. This game was anything but a runaway for Italy. The Czech Republic kept the Italian defense on their toes, matching their bats hit-for-hit, throughout the game.
Angelo Palumbo walked away with the W for Italia. He threw 6.0 innings, giving up 1 run off 7 hits, while striking out just two. He threw 84 pitches, 54 across the heart of the plate. LHP Radim Chroust started on the hill for the Czechs. Over 4.0 innings he gave up 5 runs off 6 hits, striking out just 1 with only 42 of his 71 pitches landing in the zone.
The first two innings of the game the lead-off batter, for each side, reached with a swing of the bat. In the first, there was a payout for each team. Schneider started things off for the Czech Republic doubling to left. He was driven in by the Mets AAA catcher, Martin Cervenka.
Twins AAA 3B Drew Maggi scored three for Italia starting in the bottom of the first. He reached on a single and was driven around on a sacrifice fly off the bat of former Blue Jay, and Twin, Chris Colabello.
Maggi, once again, started off the inning in the bottom of the 3rd for Italy's offense. He walked aboard and moved over to 2nd courtesy of a HBP, before coming around once again courtesy of Colabello, who hit one deep over the left field fence.
Maggi reached on another single to start off the 5th. He moved to 2nd on a single off Vaglio's bat, and over to 3rd on a double play ball that caught out Colabello, before being driven in on a single by Giuseppe Mazzanti.
