What are *your* favorite ways to easily reduce waste in the kitchen or anywhere in your home? 🤗🌱🌎
@lorieann8522
@lorieann8522 Год назад
Reusable produce bags! Also great for when washing bras or super delicate items that are small. I collect ends and pieces, outer ends, etc of certain produce items and freeze until full then I make stock with them. What I cant use is composted. Our community has 3 compost drop off areas which my son loves to help me with. Friday or Saturday I like to make a veggie dinner that uses up what is left from the weeks grocery trip to reduce food waste too.

Herbs. Before they go wro g i make sauces from them. Chermoula, chimichurri, chermoula, zhoug ... you can even uste stems ❤ but my best anti waste hack is owning a little freezer. Saves everything ! Leftovers, things i don't want to cook yet, bread, homemade goods ... i couldn't live without

I absolutely love that you use and reuse everything! Some people pick on me when I do, but it's my little way to help the environment. It's also esthetically pleasing when all of the jars are the same or even really cute and quirky when mixed! I love your channel and have been binging your video's lately! I'm slowly converting to plant based, so thank you so much and keep your amazing content coming! I love all the different recipes and can't wait to try the ice cream! 😘👍🏻😁🥰😍❤️🤗🌱🌎♻️

Some of your tips I’ve been doing for quite awhile - reusing storage bags (got my first order of silicone bags last week!), using mesh bags at grocery stores, refusing to buy produce in plastic netting and wasteful plastic. I didn’t know the lettuce revival trick, but have been using the same method on celery for years. A tip for fruit prep - I freeze strawberry tops and pineapple cores for smoothies. Lots of nutrition in both! I enjoy your videos. I get all kinds of helpful ideas from watching. 😊

For a produce box, also look and see if there's a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) near you. You pre-buy a share of a local farm's output and you get a box every week of whatever is seasonal and local. It's usually a small farm. Bonus: you often end up with unusual things and have to get creative to use them up, and may end up with a new favorite. I learned about chard one year!
@LetsEatPlants
@LetsEatPlants Год назад
Absolutely! I really wish we had one locally. 😢😢 We only *finally* got the produce boxes last year, but I definitely have my eyes out for a CSA box! My mom gets on (in California) and loves it. She especially loves the surprise items. 😝😝

One of my favorite ways to keep waste in check is to use veggie scraps for broth. And the best way is to use what I have before it goes bad and I have to throw it out!

Where would you recommend getting a produce box?
@LetsEatPlants
@LetsEatPlants Год назад
Check out the description box of this video! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AQguRV9YNi4.html 😃 There are a few US companies listed and the one I use in Toronto. If you’re not near any of these you can google farm box + your area. There are sometimes local CSA (community supported agriculture) boxes you can get. ☺️

For the silicon mats you have for the oven - how do they handle oil? I had some spilt mats and it was really hard to clean oil off (olive oil). They always felt oily and slimy after 1 use.
@LetsEatPlants
@LetsEatPlants Год назад
I know what you mean! I cook cookies on them (with vegan butter) and I do notice the oil when I was them… but after a bit of soaking (5-10 mins. in some warm soapy water) they usually clean very easily!
@kiwifeijoa
@kiwifeijoa Год назад
One way I clean silicone items is to boil them, that seems to release more stains, odours and oils, not entirely, but it does help.
@LetsEatPlants

is the produce box a local thing? or is it an online subscription i’m interested!!
@LetsEatPlants
@LetsEatPlants Год назад
It is a local thing! So in Toronto there are 2 companies I like (let me know if you're in Toronto!). But there are some in the US as well that I've seen. Misfits Market, Imperfect Foods, Hungry Harvest, Perfectly Imperfect Produce... you can try searching these in your area, or another would be "your city + CSA produce box", which would be very similar (CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture). 🤗🤗

How do you get the smell out of the jars when you reuse them. I have tried to reuse jars however they always still smell like what was in them before.
@bearclaire
@bearclaire Год назад
Soak in boiling water with baking soda!
@LetsEatPlants
@LetsEatPlants Год назад
I’ve never had a problem with the smell in the jars… after removing the labels I just put them in the dishwasher and they come out perfectly clean! But the lids I do notice some lingering smells sometimes. So I do a small amount of white vinegar & hot water and just let it sit in the lid for 30ish minutes. Rinse it out and clean it with soap (you can also put those in the dishwasher too) and the smell should be gone! 😊😊

I'm surprised you don't eat the skin of potatoes or sweet potatoes. There are great vitamins and nutrients in that skin. Batch prep is always great, and I scrub the potatoes well and eat the skin on. That's one less step to prep.
@LetsEatPlants
@LetsEatPlants Год назад
I know! It’s really silly of me. 😆🙈 It’s only because I’m so lazy to scrub them and I never buy organic. But yes, I always think about how many good vitamins are going to waste when I do that. 🫠🫠
