Discovered your channel this week...have not stopped watching. I LOVE it!! Amazing how many projects we have coming up that correspond to your videos. Since you're always asking for ideas...here's one of my upcoming projects. We have been restoring a 110 yr old farmhouse. (Husband said it would take two years 12 years ago!) Our interior staircase is a hot mess...the lower portion has really dark stained treads, risers, spindles and newel post and the second floor portion is covered with sloppily done white glossy paint...and a lot of layers of it! Sadly, it is pretty clear that previous owners weren't really striving for quality workmanship. I would love to see a staircase makeover to lighter stained treads, spindles, and handrails with painted risers. Every video I have found on YT involves replacement of the treads, adding veneer to the risers, or some other shortcut rather than restoring the original....and if at all possible, I want to preserve my beautiful old home. So if you happen to come across a similar ugly hot mess staircase I would love to see how a true pro fixes it!! Thanks.

Just wanted to leave my 2 cents on the countertop. After you sand it with whatever grade steel wool you choose if you put on a automotive wax (I use meguiars gold class) and then let it dry until it becomes hazy (5-10 minutes) then buff it off you get a super smooth finish

Hi Jeff. Love the content. I have a plumbing question for you. I recently added a second outdoor faucet in the front yard behind a bush after my wife complained about not having one other than the back yard. I used a 10" frost free hose bib thingy connected directly to a ball valve which connects directly to about 40 ft of PEX tubing and then a second ball valve and to an unused copper "T" from an old downstairs bathroom. (Was previously capped) The PEX is a clear run, I used 3 of those plastic radius thingies where I needed turns. Here's the problem. When my wife used the tap outside (just hose, no sprinkler or nozzle or anything) the water pulsated violently and continuously! I played around and found that if I set the ball valve near the "T" at ~50% the problem went away and the water flows nicely. Did I do anything wrong? What the heck is going on? Thanks much!

Would it not be preferred to slightly backbevel the side cuts a couple degrees so that your final scribe fits as tight as possible? Or would the live edge mean that you want square cuts on the side so there's no gap on the bottom? I'd think a bit of dark caulk could fill any minor void but you'd have a cleaner edge on the top which would be more visible.

Hi, In renovating my 1925 house I removed the old subfloor and am laying down two layers of 5/8 t&g plywood. I had to cut the bottom layer to non-standard lengths so the short edge joints were on top of the joists. As I'm putting the top layer on I am trying to avoid having any joints above the bottom layer. In one area I will be within 1 inch. Is this acceptable or should I cut plywood and have 5 feet then 8 feet then three feet? The bottom joint is over a doubled LVL joist. Also, I was unable to get a consistent 1/8 inch Gap between the short edges. Should I fill the Gap with something to help luxury vinyl plank not show the gaps or should I lay down some underlayment?

since wood slabs are prone to bow and will be exposed to moisture being in a bathroom is there any risk of not sealing the sides/bottom of the slab?

I see you used glue/sawdust to fill the checking in the end of the slab. Do you think that's good enough for a project that's inside? I was taught that you should structurally join the checking to prevent it from opening further.

Any advice on how to install a vanity with copper water supply lines coming out of the floor...and the vanity already has the marble top and sinks attached (so it's too heavy to lift and place onto the copper lines). I'd rather not cut large holes to tilt the vanity onto the pipes. Should I cut the copper low to the floor and switch to pex? Any tricks or tips?
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 4 года назад
Hi Peter, I would disengage the counter top from the cabinet. that will always be easier. Is this a reuse situation? if so then look for the silicone joint( if stone counter) or the screws from the underside holding the counter ( if laminate)
@MrFishmanP
@MrFishmanP 4 года назад
Home RenoVision DIY Thanks for the advice. Love the videos and the channel! The vanity is newly purchased from Wayfair which came with a marble top and 2 sinks attached. Looks like they used silicone to attach the top. It was very heavy and difficult to move upstairs to the bathroom. We considered removing the top before carrying upstairs, but I was afraid that removing the top would have damaged the wood and finish. Any thoughts on how to do that? I was thinking that pulling a wire between the top of the wood and bottom of the marble might remove the silicone. Alternatively, since the vanity is on legs and there is a 3” gap to the floor, it might just be easier to cut the copper at 2 inches high, cut 1 inch holes in the vanity above the pipes, connect shark bite couplers to the copper and finish the (rough) plumbing with pex, so I could move the vanity in place without having to lift it over the pipes (which currently protrude 12” from the floor).

Why not install the bench with the pipes hidden inside?
@shanedennis1136
@shanedennis1136 4 года назад
I has a similar sized piece of wood that I used for my floating shelf. It was an old cedar telephone pole I found. I used big lag bolts and drilled holes behind my floating shelf and slid it on so the lag bolts were hidden. It wasnt easy. Not every bolt was exactly straight after all said and done. Mine was on an open wall also way easier than this install. The holes I drilled in the wood were difficult to match the angles of the lag bolts in the walls so I had to drill a few holes a little bigger and because of the weight of the piece of wood it starting to sag in the front because of this. I ended up getting it perfectly level after a few tweaks but I wouldnt ever do that method again on a large piece of wood unless they are small floating shelves

this is just more practical. I am going to finish off under the counter with some trim to clean up the look. Cheers!

Dissapointed that the pipes aren't at least half way in the wood. Do you guys have plans to hide it ? Like a pipe cover of some sorts ?

Personally I think I would have put the pipes inside the slab or at the very least capped or smoothed the end of the pipe. As you say, it’s prob sharp and someone will cut their fingers on it

“There’s no such thing as applying a finish smooth as glass.” Should have used an epoxy clear coat with an hvlp sprayer. That WILL give a finish as smooth as glass.
