The transition from 1.25mm to PH2.0 connectors was a game changer for tiny whoops. The BT2.0 connector from BetaFPV promises to be a game changer too. Here is how it compares to all other options, including the crimped (aka folded) PH2.0, XT30, solid pin PH2.0 and the good old "red" JST.
If you are looking for a TLDR: The BT2.0 is worth it as a battery connector for 1S micros but for me personally it is not worth the hassle of swapping all of my stick-shaped tiny whoop batteries to BT2.0. I will be changing all of my Tinyhawk 450mAh and 550mAh batteries though.
Looking forward to the rumoured connector by Gaoneng (GNB), 2020 is looking great for micros!
Note: All the connectors used in these tests were brand new. Keep in mind that plugging and unplugging them hundreds of times will probably affect their performance. Wearing out all connectors equally / fairly is not possible so I did not get into this rabbit hole.

coming in to fall, it's time to replace my old whoop lipos, so I started looking into bt2.0. this video alone has all the info I needed, cleanly laid out. Thank you sir, you saved me a lot of trouble and second guessing.

I really like your videos, you put very good and solid reference material on batteries, motors and props. This test is very good, I'm impressed how poorly JST perform, have being using for long and no problem.

Thank you very much :) Same here but not on power hungry builds. I was expecting better performance, at least significantly better than the solid PH2.0, but it looks like a crimped connection (in general) is worse than I thought.

Asked myself this question sometimes and you gave the answer now. Thanks. If I'm in doubt I'll go for the XT30 because I expect less wear after 300 times switching (150 times charging and 150 times flying).

You're welcome. It depends on the build and the extra weight you want to carry, I will continue to use solid PH2.0 in my 65mm whoops.

@@muteFPV I decided to switch over to BT2. Started by converting 4 1s GNB's, to 2 2s packs with one BT2. The two packs are back to back, and one tab of each soldered together. Then the BT2 is soldered directly to the remaining tabs. I can't tell a lick of difference in runtime or perfomance over the solid 1s x2 connectors on my 2s whoop. So I came looking for the comparisons. The graphs show a story that makes most people( including JB's video) think BT2 is worth it. But the backend math tells a different story, and I was quite pleased with your summary. Doubt I will be converting the rest of my packs, and I think I'll try to pick up that crimping gear since I can't seem to find the 2s solid pin pigtails any more.

I agree, for the time being solid PH2.0 is perfectly fine for 65mm 1S whoops. If all stick-shaped batteries came with exposed wires, I would probably use BT2.0 for high-KV whoops - but the whole process of replacing most whoop batteries is not worth the effort for me personally.

@@muteFPV yes indeed, it added extra 10-20 seconds to flight time, well, it feels like now battery works as it supposed to :) such a shame manufacturers use folded pins in stock configurations, i wonder why.. not a huge price difference I guess, comparing to performance. Sigh

And the master is at it again! Thank you for all of your work! I just bought a Tinyhawk 2, along with some GNB 300mAh 2S batteries. I also purchased some BT2.0 connectors to swap everything over to, but now I am torn as to whether to just upgrade the battery lead on the TH2 to solid pin (if it is not already) or to swap everything to BT2.0. Choices, choices!

@@muteFPV I plan on doing only 2S if at all possible just to keep from having to keep up with two different types of batteries. I'll be using a throttle scale in Betaflight on a profile switch for indoors. If that doesn't work, I'll be getting some more 450-520mAh 1S batteries. I have not gotten them in yet, but when I do I'll let you know the wire gauge. :)

@@muteFPV I had thought about XT30 since I'll have a ton more available thrust, but voltage change even from PH2.0 solid pin to XT30 at 12A is not huge (3.71v average to 3.75v), and changing to solid pin means only changing the connector on the TH2, and I am lazy :)

@@jedimasterben Ah sorry, I didn't know that the GNB 2S batteries already come with PH2.0! I imagined JST and that you would have to change it anyway. PH2.0 it is then + you will be able to easily run 1S packs too this way :)

Awesome as ever 👍 If I got it right. On low current draw, the PH2 is good enough. On high currents (6-8A and above) then there’s a more pronounced difference. So you don’t really need the BT2 on low current setups, such as those with 060x-080x motors. Did I get that right? Thanks!

If it was easy to swap the PH2.0 on whoop batteries, I would easily convert them to BT2.0 for high-KV setups. If buying brand new packs, there aren't enough options yet to choose from when it comes to BT2.0. We will see how it goes. It is perfect for my Tinyhawk and very easy to convert. Light toothpicks with 08xx motors and 65mm props will also benefit from BT2.0 but the trend now is wider motors and larger props even on 1S - such setup will easily carry the XT30.

The 65mm prop size gives enough thrust so XT30 is fine. For whoops it is too much of a weight penalty though. I miss my microgp, I have it in the to-repair-pile for so long...

Hi. Great job on the comparison. I have a 1s babytooth running 1103 11000kv on 3 inch props with a xt30 connector. I accidentally bought a lot of bt2.0 connectors and was wondering should I change the xt30 for the bt2.0. I don't mind the work but just wondering would there be performance loss if I swapped the connectors?

I would probably stick with XT30 for your setup. If it was the GNB27 and you needed a bit of weight loss, it would be a good option. I wouldn't put the effort into converting it to BT2.0.

Cool test, only saw it now! Quick question on the solder-improved folded PH2.0 - did you also flow the solder into the fold of the pin, or did you only put solder onto the joint of crimp and wire? I guess you did, but couldn't really see that in the video, sorry...

Thanks! I mostly added solder onto the joint and continued with lower heat to help solder flow internally through the fold. I don't know how far it went but soldering straight onto the fold could cause more issues (possibly hindering the folded pin from contacting the female connector side fully) if done unevenly. Changing to a solid pin connector is so much easier than trying to "improve" a folded pin connector anyway...

many thanks for this testseries and comparsion. I have a Tinyhawk S and many betaFPV Batteries. I am currently operating this with an adapter cable but i the flighttime with max. 3 Minutes is very bad what do you think for this plan: convert the Tinyhawk and the original Batteries (or other Batteries with cable) to BT2.0 = more flighttime? and for the build-in connectors a PH2.0 to BT.2.0 Adapter = little bit more flighttime and i can use the batts for other models?

If you don't mind the cost of the BT2 connectors, that is what I did for my Tinyhawk2. I think it is the perfect connector for this setup. A PH2 to BT2 is very lossy but at least it let's you use more batteries - maybe do what I did, a PH2 soldered straight to a BT2, without any wires in between.

Not gonna lie, I would like to see this video redone with a GMB27/Eachine ET2.0 connectors, as making video only for “one” connector might don’t make sense. Nevertheless thanks as always for great and straightforward content. It’s seems like if you got solid pin PH2.0 it not worth a hassle to switch to the BT2.0

If I remember correctly, when I did this video the GNB27 connector was only a rumor, not even released. I will test that one too, I still don't have it. Solid pin PH2 is still a viable option, especially for 1S, that is true.

This is what Joshuas 'test' should have been. Outstanding job! Do you by chance have any data if you also test thicker/thinner wires? Some whoops come with awg 22 or 24. What happens with awg 18?

Thank you very much. AWG is another topic I wanted to touch on, but on the other hand you will always be "limited" by what the battery comes with so I decided to do other tests instead. I use 20AWG on the battery leads for most micros with PH2.0 or similar - I doubt going bigger will be beneficial. On the other hand I have 1S packs with crazy thick leads (like the Panther pack I had tested from Hobbyking).

I tested the exact scenario most people will encounter in the real world: buying a PH pack and converting it to BT. It's great to see others taking the testing even further to prove the point, but few people will go to these extremes. For example, how many people re crimp their own PH connectors? So testing a hand crimped PH connector shows its best-case performance but it doesn't reflect the performance people will actually get. Both results are interesting. I am personally more interested in widely practicable results.

​@@JoshuaBardwell You either didn't pay attention to the video or misunderstood it, so let me start with what you got completely wrong: the reason I crimped my own PH2.0 is because most pre-crimped female PH2.0 harnesses are sold with mediocre wires. I did not suggest re-crimping all batteries, they already come with wires of good quality and proper AWG size anyway. As for the scenario you mentioned, if buying a PH2.0 pack to convert it to BT2.0 is the real world use case of the new connector, it has already failed. Either battery manufacturers adopt it (with whatever licensing scheme BetaFPV has decided to go with) and we have many packs to choose from, or it will not be a viable option for micros. As I already commented in your video, your test was inconclusive and I hope this video clearly shows why.

Do you think its worth to swap al my 1s packs to bt2.0? I only use one quad for indoor (livingroom ect) the Tinyhawk S.. i got the Tinyhawk 2 ordered and the Tinyhawk 2 Race and for some reason i only use the th S for indoor atm but if i have the th 2 I probably use that one too for indoor but definitely use xt30 on the th 2 race. Anyways sut i use the bt2.0 for al my 1s packs or take that 1.2gr extra and make them all xt30?

Would be interesting to see where the GNB27 fits in compared to the Bt2.0. Sticking to solid pin ph2.0 for 1s whoops for sure. I do plan on running BT2.0 on my 75mm whoops running 1102 motors and I am running GNB27 on my a couple 1s toothpicks and seems to work well. Also, for the folks who still like running 2x300mah 1s lipos, the bt2.0 2s adapter used on the beta65hd is pretty cool, seems better than ph2.0. Oh yeah! one other interesting application I have found is those little 2s batteries for the Tinyhawk s that were running on ph2.0. Converted one over to bt2.0 and it does seem to help the voltage sag a bit, though not perfect lol.

I haven't got my hands on the GNB connectors yet, I want to test them too :) I use bt2 on my Tinyhawk II and converted most of my 450-550 1S packs and 300 2S packs to bt2, works great for this setup.

Thank you very much, I have bought a set of 6 of these small stick shaped whoop batteries and on some i noticed hotter than usual Ph2.0 connectors(after 20ish cycles), like 40° to 50°C where the battery stayed at a normal like 25 to 30°C Temperature after flight and they also had less performance and punch compared to the other, normal Batteries. Does a Ph2.0 degrade faster than the Bt2.0?

Haven't had the BT2.0 for long enough to know how it does. PH2.0 degrades from plugging/unplugging, usually the battery side (female PH2.0) where the connector becomes more loose. So on the same quad, some batteries result in a hot PH2.0 and other batteries not, both without a hot battery?

@@muteFPV Both Batteries had about the same temperature after flight. Would it be worth a try to solder just a tiny bit of solder to the solid pins of the male connector so that they become "thicker" (in diameter) and thus have a better contact to the worn female connector?

I doubt you (or me or anyone) can apply solder evenly enough on the solid pins to improve contact. I don't remember having a hot connector but not hot battery myself, usually the batteries land very warm all the time.

I'm really surprised at how poorly the jst connector did. I use the jst in a 2s lightweight toothpick and it shows no signs of aggressive voltage sag or heat buildup. The build is a Reddevil frame using 1102 8700 kv motors, 65mm two-blade props, geprc aio whoop board, eachine nano vtx, xm+ receiver and runcam nano 2 camera. Battery is a 2s 300 mah nanotech. Auw including battery is 58 grams. On this build the jst seems to do a fine job: when I land at 3.5 volts per cell, the battery recovers to 3.65 or 3.7 volts per cel. So not too much sag. On punchouts I get some significant sag, same as my other heavier xt30 builds. Edit: although now that I think about it, my 2s jst build probably pulls less amps than your typical whoop, simply because it's 2s instead of 1s. For example, my flight times are typically 05:30 to hit 3.5 volts per cell. A typical 1s whoop using 1s 300mah battery flies about 3 mins. So that means higher amp draw on 1s. Maybe that's why my jst build is doing fine on this connector? Doing the math, my avg amp draw during flight is approx 2.6 amps (the battery only takes back about 240 mah during recharging).

Lightweight builds like the one you describe are efficient but could still benefit from a swap to XT30. I use the 2S 300mAh nanotech packs (45/90C) too in toothpicks and 40mm-prop-whoops and have been very happy with them, but numbers don't lie: it is an inferior connector to my surprise as well.

Only the crimp. Any excess solder on the folded pin side could mean even less contact (in total) with the battery side.

Still waiting for the chinese cloning army to come up with affordable BT2.0 clones. My budget is kind of limited and would break the bank to replace all my microlosi and ph2.0 lipos accumulated over the years :-/. first time I heard about GNB entering the connector game, I'll stay tuned for more :). Also probably not easy to portray in a repeatable test but from what I read in the PH2.0 datasheet from JST (the company, not the connector style) PH2.0 degrades after many mating cycles. Looking at the pins under a microscope they look very bumpy and the plating looks spotty but nonetheless your test gives me the peace of mind that I don't have to swap all my lipos immediately or I'm missing out.

I agree on the cost of BT2.0, at least now they have an option to buy only the female connectors and not an equal amount of both only (like they had at the beginning). I have a note in the description about the mating cycles, there is no way for me to wear out all connectors in a fair manner. Especially for the PH2.0 I suspect that the female (battery) side will be the first culprit, not the solid male part.

I will use BT2.0 for my 300mAh 2S packs for the Tinyhawk. For bigger ones, XT30 makes much more sense.

Just received my PH 2.0 conectors from alliexpress but then I saw they are 26 awg non solid pins and wondered are they even useful for tiny whoop batteries. Did you test similar ? I'm still learning so I fly with brushed quad with 1S 260-300MAh.

It will fly but soldering 20AWG or 22AWG to it with a solid PH2.0 will be a very big improvement, both for brushed and brushless whoop.

All this talk about connectors for 1s & 2s builds , but what about good capacitors for them as well do you have a video about that ?? For example I had a 1s toothpick brushed build I wanted to put a capacitor on but I only had a 2 caps left one was huge and weighed almost a gram it’s was a 470uf 16v & bigger then the xt30 connector ! The other small one is 220uf 16v as well ,the size was about that my of a pencil eraser ✏️ just perfect for my build but it’s 16v ? , I still installed it with no initial power up issues , but don’t know the true positive/negative benefits of it yet because I haven’t flown it yet to see the video quality. Will it introduce more noise since it’s 16v 220uf ? & not something with closer voltage to 1s

great information as always. converting my mob6 to betafpv bt2.0 making a video of that soon. prob will leave all the stick ph2.0 's alone and just make an adapter to connect to the bt2.0 female on the whoop as i will mainly be using the bt2.0 batteries. no way im putting an xt60 on there lol. but i wonder if i could strip ones plastic down how much lighter would it be... hmmm

It depends on the XT30 (not XT60) connector you use, the Amass ones don't have much plastic to remove. Based on my tests and flights, I would suggest you stay away from the ph2 to bt2 adapter - better solder both connectors on the battery leads of the mobula6 instead, if you intend to use both battery types...

I need a bit more info to understand exactly what you need to do. Does the 3S2P battery only have main battery leads (one - and one +)? Are there no balance wires for each cell? Is the 4pin JST you want to connect meant for balance charging? Maybe it is JST XH in this case, not PH.

@@andrewb7817 at first glance you connect the - of the battery to both - - (2 pins) of the JST, and the + of the battery to both ++ (the other 2 pins). But I will have to make sure and look into this board further, to find out why it needs power input like this.

Yeah it looks like this is a 4-pin 12V input (can handle 10-15V) and probably they use 2 pins for - and 2 pins for + for more current delivery (people power those via dupont wires or other thin wires. I have never seen this board before, what are you using it for? It looks like it has a great community and a ton of resources available on the website.

If you mean for the battery, definitely solder the xt30 directly to the wires with fresh tin, for the best possible electrical connection and for durability. Make sure you cut, tin and solder the wires one by one and not let them touch each other. For a charging harness, you could do both, since the current will be fairly small, but again the proper way to do it is cut the pins from the wire, tin it and solder it to the xt30 connector.

Specific to batteries with leads, I find at times the leads excessively long. I was wondering if you have any idea, how say a linear length of wiring compares to the connector itself, in terms of weight and losses. So, if one shortens the wires, say 3/4 inch, would that be more or less equivalent to the connector itself even being there? A connector is always a negative in weight, and should not add more resistance as a bottleneck, ideally. There is more weight and losses in the wiring (excessive length) people tend to ignore, I always cut back to what’s necessary on XT30 leads. Another factor I have never seen evaluated, is the gauge of wire off the ESC, sometimes it is 16, 18, or 20 awg. Seems to me those differences would matter in weight and particularly punch out voltage drop, a lot. Nice work 😁.

I haven't tested it but I doubt that such a small difference in wire length can match the losses of the connector. Maybe I will try it, I hadn't thought of this. When you say wires off the ESC you mean from ESC to motors?

muteFPV - no, I mean the wires connecting the esc to battery connection, not just wires on batteries. Several inches there round trip. I have batteries 4s 650 with 14 awg factory fitted to XT30s, on 2.5 inch quads, ridiculous. If I had a high current low voltage dc power supply and precise instrumentation, I could come up with an accurate resistance for a new connector, and calculate the resistance for the copper leads from published specs, in per unit length, to do the comparison. Can also figure connector depreciation from wear and contact pressure loss over time.

Hello :) I doubt it. The pin size is just slightly larger than PH2.0. Also you lose the convenience of PH2.0 which is already the "standard" for micro batteries. If you go into the hassle of swapping battery connectors, I think you are better of with BT2.0 (or the GNB connector which I have not tried yet...). Also there are now more batteries available with BT2.0, than at the time I made this video.

I just curious that tattu ever used jst xh on these products out there before bt2.0 or gnb27 booming. I just tried using jst xh and its join way cooler than ph2.0. but iam not sure about flight time.

Which Tattu batteries do you mean? All batteries use JST-XH for the balance port but I don't remember any using it for the main discharge leads (with very few exceptions of batteries having only balance leads and powering the quad/device from the same connector). Was your PH2.0 folded pin or solid pin type?

I haven't tried it so I don't know how it compares. GNB has very good batteries so if this becomes the more "common" connector for micros, I would put aside a bit of added weight and go for the better batteries. Beta's batteries have never impressed me. Also I don't know how "open" they are with the licensing of their BT2 connector, which is crucial for making it THE connector for micros...

@@muteFPV id do xt30. Cheaper and although heavier, the 2s seem to be a few grams heavier anyway But I would add a small capacitor, I've heard a few people damage their board when switching to an xt30 allegedly the added cap protects the board.

The connector on the battery side (female) is always crimped. The connector on the AiO side (male) can be crimped or solid-pin. The male connectors in the banggood link you sent me are solid pin. Does your problem happen with specific batteries, or is it completely random? Since the problem is not on every flight, I don't think you need to change the wires.

I always put heatshrink because you never know. Yes, you just solder the wires. I plug a female connector to it, to prevent the pins from moving while soldering (the plastic can heat up and loosen)

1:20 Wow... look at that 10th of a gram added just for that. I've been saying for some time now that Sparkfun's Special Blend unleaded silver solder adds far less weight than leaded solder, is a better conductor, is harder and stronger so less likely to let a pad peel off by bending the solder at the edge, AND unlike the first generation of unleaded garbage is as easy to work with as good leaded solder if not easier. So for micro builds where a gram matters 96.35% Sn (Tin), 3.0% Ag (Silver), 0.5% Cu (Copper), 0.15% Sb (Antimony) is the way to go... probably why it's out of stock as the RC world discovers old opinions do not apply to changes in technology. Expensive by weight as you get more, but well worth the weight savings on tiny builds IMO. I really dislike the PH 2.0 after 5 connections as flight times go down and voltage sag goes up. Emax includes a 2nd lead for a reason GNB has now corrected with the new GNB 27 1mm connector which I'd really like to see tested too against the BT2.0 ;-) I suspect the new 0.82g GNB 27 will have a higher rating than the BT2.0 giving us two options for above and below the 22g mark.

It is definitely less than 1/10 of a gram but I don't have a precision scale. I want to test the GNB connector too, I probably will at some point. As for the BT2.0, I don't think it is worth it 100%. I fully converted my Tinyhawk 2 to BT2.0 but none of my 1S whoops.

@@muteFPV That's great... look forward to seeing your results. Really interesting to see even at low amperage how much advantage the XT30 still has. The big difference I've noticed on the Tiny Hawk is after the PH2.0 has been used a lot. I have the original Tiny Hawk and thought my 520 1S GNB batteries which I take good care of were about done, but then I replaced the stock connector Emax includes because just handling it started causing it to lose connection. After that using the same 10 batteries with original connectors (so only one side replaced) my flight times around the neighborhood almost doubled making me realize how bad the connection was. But after just 2 more flights per pack it was weak again. I've read other people say they were disappointed with the BT2.0 compared to using an XT30 so my guess is that's why GNB's new 27 is heavier. Seems the BT2.0 is best for really lightweight 1S whoops as those using it for that seem content. I have the GNB 27s coming tomorrow it looks like so will pull out my Tinyhawks and see if I can get a working one out of the parts hoping it's the warn connectors causing both to fail right after take off. And thanks for all the hard work... great comparison.

You're welcome! Is the PH2.0 you used for the Tinyhawk solid pin or folded / crimped pin? If I remember correctly the Tinyhawks 1 and 2 did not come with solid pin.

@@muteFPV Correct.. both came with the folded pins and that includes the spares with lead Emax provided. The GNB27's came in today and look good. Weight on a triple beam scale for 5 pairs was 4 grams so a little lighter that expected @ 0.8g. They are longer than the BT2.0 @ 17.70mm pin end to pin end connected but the body is only 12.06L x 7.01W x 4H mm not counting the 1mm thick tabs for grip (which can be cut off easy enough) making it 8.67mm Wide at the ends so still a lot smaller than an XT30 despite the length which is still almost 2mm shorter that the red JST @ 19.50Lmm. My guess it will have less resistance and a higher amp rating than the BT2.0 due to the length but just have to wait and see. They make a nice tight fit and unlike the XT30 and most other bullet connectors the pins are solid and not cross split or using some other tension system so should maintain their amp rating whatever that turns out to be.
