As a man we find no growth sitting in our own heads or feelings. That’s where “be a man” derives from. It’s not to put your feelings aside, but to make clarity upon them for oneself’s own benefit. To maintain integrity, honor, & stay true. Keeping a leveled attitude throughout the journey of manhood & always trying to stand by what’s right. Staying strong & indomitable when all else try’s desperately to break you down. Living by God & following that narrow path will guide all of mankind toward completion. I don’t speak for any religion in particular, just look for yourself. I promise, if you knock you shall find what it is you so seek.

Let me share with you what the phrase "be a man" has taken in my life at different ages: 8: Talked to my first crush for the first time. 10: Helped me deal with my father leaving my mother and two other brothers. 14: Fought with a guy who I hardly knew in school for looking at me funny. 17: Robbed a store and sold the items at school. 18: Skipped out on college to help my mother with the bills. 20: Broke into a store overnight to help pay for my younger brother's college. 21: Joined the military. 24: Gave me the courage to talk to a woman at the bar. 26: Proposed to and married that woman. The fact of the matter is that this phrase has caused a lot of trouble in my life, but also a lot of good. It does mean something to "be a man" and that is to do what you know you have to - whether it be good, bad, stupid, or courageous. Be a man.

***** Good morning, or good night wherever you are :) The phrases "be a man" or "man up" or "grow some balls" are used on males who exhibit actions and emotions that are deemed as weak such as crying, being scared or feeling sad. These terms denounce males' right to cry, be scared, sad, weak or to lose - which are all basic human emotions and experiences. The terms propose that these emotions are unlike a "man." The terms propose that there is only one way to be a man, and that is to not cry, not be scared, not be weak - which shouldn't be the case. A better phrase to your opinion of telling a boy to be an adult and take responsibility, is not "be a man" but rather, "My boy, you can cry all you want. And the end of it all, you'll have take responsibility for your actions like any other human."

"Be a man" = Do it/ Get it done. it means " put aside all your reservations, self-defeating emotions and limiting rationalizations and do what's needed to be done". It could be putting your dog down. It could be quitting your job to do what you really want to do in spite of the risk. It could be asking out a girl you admire. Or maybe their's a madman (madperson?) holding a plane hostage and you need to act. Being a man means putting action over emotion. This isn't exclusive to men btw. This goes without saying. It's just not something that defines femininity. Everything else about "being a man" is decided by the type of man (person) you want to be. And when you're not a man, you're a boy. Selfish, self-centered, erratic, lets his emotions get the better of him in important situations, and lets fear get the better of him.

I love how all these opinions are valid, from age 5-50 because it is simply a question that shows what you value in life. Imo being a man is embracing humility and becoming mentally strong, to be a rock for yourself and others while still expressing your feelings in a healthy way. A roll model I often look back to is Iroh from ATLA because of his ability to find the good in everyone and how he created a rock for Zuko to rely on and learn off of.

Women beat mean too, so by that logic, then every woman beats the shit out of a man and B. It scares and excites me that we have such open-minded people walking around on this planet. I love to hear people dismissing the idea of being a man as we all understand that the cliche has no place in our society. In terms of reality and honoring tradition, which I find equally as important as progress, to hear this term called sexist does not sit right with me. Im 21, and I have only viewed this world from one set of eyes, but being a man to me means that you truly embrace life. You don't complain, you don't blame, you do what needs to be done and you enjoy every second on this earth.. even the moments you tell yourself you dislike. It's something that real men have the capability of, and sometimes you need to be reminded of your inner-strength in order to celebrate it. That's not to say women can't share these characteristics, but to say that men aren't more capable of this specifically would be ignoring your observations in place of sensitivity. We like to find what's wrong with things these days. Let's start celebrating what is right.

@@waiskuxx i'm a feminist and i agree with what @Savvy Savages is saying. i think when they say "be a man", they mean "take responsibility of your actions" and they would say the same thing to their daughters "be a woman" for the same reason. i think their interpretation isn't sexist and instead, conveys what they think is to be a good human (regardless of preferred gender).

When someone says "be a man" especially when females say its usually to get you to act or conform to their ideals because some think males should provide mostly everything for them and that is ignorant and degrading. Considering there are tons of young men that grow up nowadays in a single parent mother environment and don't have a stable father figure "man" to teach them these things society believes are so called males role in life. Not saying that women can't raise young men but how can a woman decide what a man is or isn't when they are in fact not a man. That's like a man telling a female to "woman up" or "take it like a woman" it sounds ridiculous in that aspect and the men that stand behind the typical "be a man" belief are probably victims of past sexist views and/or abuse and that were confined to those ideals and set aside their self worth and struggle to meet these irrational expectations they were held to. The question isn't where have all the good men gone but where have all the good women gone because it is you that decide the very foundation of human life and who you will conceive a child with and bring into this world be it a male or female. So ladies the next time think about what you say and what you do or who you do it with and what future will you hold for the generations to come. "Be A Woman"

I also agree! The younger ones seem more liberal saying "that's sexist" as if we need more feminism in a question strictly about Men. They act like their standing up for some unjust cause when the question is about what it means, not solving society's problems guys. The last man (50 years old) hit the nail on the head exactly! Stand up for what you believe in and don't back down, treat people with respect, be a gentleman, etc.

***** It's the symbolism of what "Be a man" was meant to mean, sure it means something different for everyone but the actual phrase in every day life is used as an insult to men and is sexist to women. It only involves feminism because they talk about Toxic Masculinity in which people try to define what a man is "tough, doesn't cry, no emotions, always a provider, never ask for help" those are a lot of the reasons so many men are homeless and turn to suicide. The phrase "grow up" can mean many "good" things to people like be more responsible and mature but to the vast majority in conversation and context, telling someone to "grow up" means stop acting like a child which implies being a child/acting like a child/doing things children do is inherently wrong. Please understand psychology and sociology before you get mad at "liberals" _as if we need more feminism in a question strictly about Men._ It is actually about men, feminism is just the only movement fighting toxic gender roles. It boils down to being a decent human being no matter your gender.

And yes, toxic femininity would be the opposite of toxic masculinity, where men are expected to be the bread winners, women are expected to be docile homemakers, submissive wives to their head of the household husbands. It's all the things wrong with typical gender roles. Even an MRA knows this.
