Rose: We never had Cracker jacks in St Olaf but we did have Genürgen Flürgen crispbreads, and if you were really lucky you’d get a dried cow’s teat as a prize in the bottom of the box. I guess I’ll have to settle for an Emmy if I open a Cracker jack box down here in Miami.
She was also the last one of them to win and now they really had all won. Betty was first, then Rue, then Estelle won supporting actress that evening, so when Bea won leading actress, it officially cemented that they were all powerhouse winners. 😊
@Theadambshapiro yes! And this also cemented them as one of the only casts in tv history where the whole cast won Emmys along with All In The Family and Will and Grace. Everybody Loves Raymond almost made it too if only Peter Boyle had won.
@@jess4metoo Don't be so harsh. Bea was very quiet and understated. Betty was more outgoing and bubbly. It seems more likely that Bea's personality just clashed with Betty's. I'm sure Betty understood this, which is why she holds no ill will to Bea.
I wonder what must have been going through Bea's mind just before Peter Falk announced the winner....Betty had won 2 years before, Rue won the previous year, and Estelle won Supporting Actress earlier that evening! It truly would have sucked if Bea hadn't won....but she did, which finished off the Grand Slam for the four of those great ladies! :)
She really should have won for the first season. I think her scene in the premier season where she confronts Stan for dumping her after her daughter's wedding was the best acting scene that entire first season. I don't even know why Betty White was nominated all seven seasons. She was good, but I think Rue (Blanche) was probably the greatest actress of that whole show.
Matt D. Bea Arthur had good comedic timing but between the "angry" acting and the shouting-- NAH. Her acting is one-dimensional and tiresome. Betty White, a sharp witty funny smart person in real life plays a slow perennially innocent woman-- THAT is acting!
> Betty White, a sharp witty funny smart person in real life plays a slow perennially innocent woman-- THAT is acting! If that is the criteria then Bea deserved her Emmy as much as anyone because from interviews with practically everyone who knows Bea Arthur personally, not those who know her through Maude or Golden Girls, has said that Bea in real life is shy, reserved and quiet, the exact opposite of her public persona. Now THAT, should I say, is acting too !!
@@TheTerryE nonsense...Bea Arthur was what held that show together without her....there is no show...and you should look into betty white a bit...she may not be the person she is supposed to be...
I was one of Norman Lear's gardeners at his Brentwood Estate. Awesome guy. Still at 96, he would ride around the grounds on his golf cart, bringing us lemonade or buying us all lunch. He knew we would sneak under the tennis courts to smoke a bowl and didn't care. Great guy.
thats what i though when she started her speech.......best comedic tv actress ever in my opinion..with respect to LB and MTM another favorite and she looks stunning here
Bea looked like she was about to fall apart like she absolutely could not believe that she won lol. She was such a self deprecating person but so, so talented and gracious as a person.
I personally think that Bea should have won the Emmy in the first season. Her performance in the episode "Guess who's coming to the Wedding" was truly a tour-de-force. Bea definitely has and showed in full force her dramatic chops in this episode. The comedic moments that she displayed were stellar as well. That performance was amazing and truly should have been recognized. Bea looks radiant in this clip as she humbly acknowledges they were an ensemble. Well deserved.
I agree. Like Candice Bergen in Murphy Brown, Bea could have won multiple years in a row - and i would have started with her in Season 1, but it was nice that each of the women won sequentially. Bea Arthur was a force of nature.
@@toddskivolocki6972 hmm donthe judges really only look at JUST the episode and actor submits..I don't get it dkesnt that seem too myopic to you or anyone else..indkdnt even know that episode submission was a thing until.recently..isn't it more fair and valid and comprehensive for the judges or the committee whatever you call them to evaluate the entire season of work to decide who wins? I thought that's how winners were determined for emmys not just based on one episode they submitted? Has it always been that way?
@@leif1075 the thing I find strange is that lead and supporting for the dramas and comedies is one episode while if you were in a mini/limited series and the lead you get judged on the whole thing. Supporting in a mini/limited...one episode. That info was relayed to me via a librarian who looked some stuff up for me that I wasn't finding.
I always think it's so fitting that Bea won wearing a white dress. She always expressed a bit of envy towards her Mame costar Angela Lansbury, who got to wear a white dress during curtain calls while Bea Arthur had to wear black. After all those years, she finally won an award wearing a white dress!
I love how all 4 won it in 3 years, the shortest possible time (since Sophia was considered a supporting role)...WELL FRICKIN' DESERVED!!!! I'm so happy none of them had to Susan Lucci it!! ;D
UncleBobIsAngry Susan Lucci is an actress that was on the now ended ABC soap opera All My Children. She was nominated for 19 years in a row for Outstanding Actress in a Daytime Soap. She lost EVERY single year until they broke the streak in 1999 & she finally won. She got a 4 minute standing ovation from the crowd when she came up to accept her long awaited and VERY deserved Emmy. Her cast mates and many fans cried real tears for her because she was always an amazing actress that was so graceful, humble & classy that was too long overlooked for an award for her performances. It was an amazing show.
osimeon00 Your statement contradicts itself, because if she didn’t deserve it yet again, then she wouldn’t have won it that year. If they were working out of sympathy like you suggested, then it wouldn’t have lasted to 19 nominations in the first place...
@@FearFanatic86 Her character was popular but she wasn't a very good actress (a lot of other soap actors came from the NYC theater world.) She had been on the show for so many years and had the best name recognition so she was usually nominated. So many times it became a running joke. She was a really good sport about it and often joked about it herself, which really endeared her to the emmy voters.
Betty won for Lead in 1986. Rue won for Lead in 1987. Bea won for Lead in 1988. Estelle won for Supporting the same night Bea won. These women have swept the Emmys for Actress:Comedy THREE YEARS IN A ROW!!! That is truly iconic!!! #GoldenGirlsStan
Julia Louis-Dreyfus has 12 lead actress comedy nominations: 5 for Christine and 7 for Veep (not even counting 7 supporting actress noms and 1 win for Seinfeld). She won 7 times for Lead Actress in a comedy.
I have loved Bea Arthur for years. She was the most hilarious woman I ever seen on TV. No one delivers a line like she did. I still watch the Golden girls. May she continue to R.I.P.
Aww so beautiful when they announced Bea winner and Estelle hurried to give her the congrats with a kiss so lovely...that was good old television. gosh to think I was born the next year in 89.
Let me say this...All four actresses were outstanding in TGG. .For me bea arthur was the glue that held the show together. .The funniest episode of the golden palace was when she returned for a guest appearance ...the dynamic had changed and it's a pity it didn't go on for another season. .still really funny...
@BeyondEnchantment Lol, you wanna tell me Golden Palace was funny just for 2 episodes? Big no, it was funny even without Dorothy. Sure she was irreplaceable but the new characters and Blanche, Rose and Sophia really held their own without her.
*UPDATE 2020 - Read Below* "The Golden Girls" became the second show in television history (after "All In The Family") where all of it's cast members won Emmys. It would take 15 more years before a third (live action) series would joined this exclusive club and that was "Will & Grace" in 2003. The other show were all it's cast won Emmys is the animated series "The Simpsons" bringing the grand total to four. Special mention needs to be made to the cast of "Schitts Creek" as this show swept the four main acting categories for a comedy series which no other show has EVER done. Congrats to Eugene & Dan Levy, Catherine O'Hara & Annie Murphy. And whilst there are other actors and actresses who are part of the cast, the four core characters on this show are the Rose family without whom there wouldn't be a series. So consider them the "unofficial fifth show" to join this exclusive group.
mike856ms - Both Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance won Emmy's for their work on the show. William Frawley was nominated but never won. Desi Arnaz was never nominated for his role
Love Bea the best. She would have me crying from laughter. The Golden Girls was one hell of a comedy show. I purchased all the series over the past few years. Loved her in Maude also.
My all-time favorite. Watching the Golden Girls, and in particular Beatrice Arthur, has gotten me through some of the worst times in my life. What a testament to the brilliant actresses and writers who made the greatest sitcom ever.
When Beatrice won, i dont know why all of the emotions of her not wanting to do the show at first hit me. She made a comeback and it was her best work ever.
There's a Rue McClanahan interview on RU-vid where she explains why Bea didn't want to do the show. Originally, the producers wanted Rue to play Rose and Betty to play Blanche. Bea felt it would be like Maude and Vivian meet Sue Ann Nivens. When Bea learned who really was going to play Rose and Blanche, she changed her mind.
Agreed. Absolutely gorgeous. I guess the beauty standards were stricter then - probably quite a bit, but as a ”traditionally feminine” short woman I still cannot understand that Dorothys/Beas looks were ”laughing stock” - she was gorgeous. I’d even say hot in her own way.
I get that it may appear that way today, but in the days of the great comedies, a joke was usually made regardless of how the person looked. It was part of the classic comedian's makeup to give and receive jibes and to be aware enough to release that it didn't matter what was said as your worth wasn't determined by other's jokes or opinions. Bea was literally stunning and she knew it. She could dish out as much as she could take. Still miss her and her unique performances.
@@PerryCJamesUK I'm not trying to express disagreement with your point, but I think I read that Bea Arthur was bothered by the jokes about Dorothy's supposed lack of attractiveness, so they toned the jokes down in the last few seasons.
@@georgeharrisonlover4300 If she asked them to tone it down, I'm glad they did. I can't see why though after all, Dorothy never really let up on Stan's appearance, Rose's intelligence or Blanche's fondness for the opposite sex. It would seem a little strange just to worry about thing and not the others. Bea was a pro and a laugh is a laugh.
Bea is very well deserving in her win. She was fantastic in the Golden Girls. She played the hell atta that character. I see you Lieutenant Columbo! Lol
I love how every year all 3 ladies were up for lead actress. I don’t believe that has ever happened since The Golden Girls. I especially love how all 4 of them won Emmys at some point. So well deserved.
I love Bea, Betty, Rue and Estelle. As little girl my favourite was Rose and Sophia but now as an adult rewatching the whole series I find myself loving Dorothy the best, Bea's performance was so good, so spot on, she was just perfect I'm my opinion and sooo... underrated!!
My definition of heaven.......dying and spending eternity on set with the Golden Girls. And , there is to be tons of animals especially dogs. It can't get any better than that!
Bea Arthur was head and shoulders above the rest in terms of talent and you have no show....without her...in fact the golden girls would NOT have become a hit without her......and you can bet your life the other three who were good in their roles.....knew it!
that was one of the most compelling aspects of the show IMO, they all mastered comedic timing yet had the range for the more serious or dramatic moments.
Love the 'Golden Girls' and besides the 'I Love Lucy" Show..they only two shows that make me laugh till I cry. So happy I can still watch the shows on TV. Rip Bea, Estelle, and Rue...but your legacy lives on.
I love that she mentioned Winnie or Winfred Harvey, a delightful writer, who gave a great interview for the Television Academy Interviews, formerly known as the Archive of American Television ❤
