When John concentrates on just making his music public, he is a phenomenal guitarist and musician --- but when he allows his private, personal matters and relationships to become public fodder --- his standing becomes tainted and tawdry! But recently now, he has squelched that . . . but now his music has suffered! Since Room for Squares, his sales have seen a continually decline. But I wish him nothing but luck and success. Cuz undoubtedly he's got skills!!!
I love John and i think he is a great artist along the lines of Dylan or Joni Mitchell. That being said, taste in art/music is subjective, and it's important that it's subjectivity is honored imho
Idk if you flipped a coin for using a/an but the coin betrayed ya m8. Your comment should read: “Hell of a guitarist.” Sorry to be the grammar gestapo! 🤦♂️
Had the privelege of watching JM play in Auckland NZ. He opened up doing a song with a maori performance group and it was amazing. His performance on the night was fkn amazing....JM you da man!....proud Kiwi!!!
The range of totally beautiful and grooving music he makes from his guitar during this performance... so rich; His rhythmic chops during the song are so locked in groove producing, and then he kicks in a pedal or two for some solos and it's so soulful. What a musical experience to have...
I saw him on his 2010 world tour. Red Rocks was like the last stop. We saw him right before this at the Gorge at George when he was killing it, but his voice was pretty much shot by this show. Its not that he's "a bad singer". You all seem to forget that he did a full on World Tour only to find out shortly afterwards he had Vocal Granuloma. It was literally eating through his vocal chords.
Brett Funk If you feel that way about Mayer, why are you watching the video in the first place? Also, your a guitar instructor....and you're talking like that? Are you afraid he may be better than you or something? I feel bad for your students. You sound like the type of person that would teach them bad habits on purpose in fear of them becoming better players than yourself. The world needs less of people like you....
sounds much better than studio made, it's a kind of pity for me because I heard this song after over 10 years. But I still happy even if I have listened this song for 1000 time within 10 years. Every John's performance made a 'new song'😌
I like how John reveals the sources for some of his tunes...all great artists 'borrow' from their predecessors...I've done the same with Johns tunes...a little teak here and there and you make it your own...
Mayer has Found his natural voice - im very impressed..he used to alter his voice while singing...This is how he should Sound as he is a big dude..now he Got that natural deeper tone down
@zaretix No. He streamed this concert live on uStream, then he left the video on there. You can catch it on his uStream account. The entire thing is on there.
If I might offer my opinion, it was almost certainly the former. By this stage in his career, (and well prior, in my opinion), his chord progressions were quite deliberate and informed by prior art. While I'm not intending to suggest the progression was "ripped" from Beast of Burden, I would say that he can 'hear' the familiarity in most of the things he was putting out during this time. Check out "BIllie Jean is Not My One Back Down" (John Mayer, RU-vid).
+duke gdl I'm sure you are perfectly qualified to criticize this man who is making millions of dollars doing this, but in case you aren't, he probably likes to switch up playing the same songs over and over again
