@@jeremysousa He's merely stating that they were unappreciative of a great cover of Hendrix's cover of Dylan. The crowd didn't seem interested in something that should have blown any music lover's mind
The fact that he actually said which song it was and who it was by at the end shows that he knows the demographic of his audience. He didn't expect anyone in that audience to know or appreciate it anyway. He just did it for himself. Props my guy.
It's what he didn't tell them, and that is nobody really associates that song with Bob Dylan, if they did he sure wouldn't be playing it ( let's be honest)
Super lame audience. No taste in music. This is the new generation. No spunk, no live, no appreciation. Has this been an acdc era with the fans back then, that stage would be shred into pieces
I just found out who John Mayer really is after watching some guitar tutorials. I thought all this time because of the media and his relationships with famous pop celebrities that he was some kind of Michael Bublé without any other musical talent than singing or some average guitarist like Jason Mraz, just playing 4 chords songs most of the time. It was really biased, I admit it. This video really blew my mind. He is great and talented. I'm now checking out some old material and I think it's one of the biggest musical discoveries I have recently made.
6:44 "That's a Bob Dylan/Jimi Hendrix song called 'All Along the Watchtower.'" He literally had to explain it to the near-silent crowd AFTER he played...
This was a from the Made in America festival and most of the crowd came to see hiphop acts like Kanye and Kendrik. Id be very surprised if they can distinguish an electric guitar from a bass guitar.
It's not terribly hard. You just need to be able to to know your fretboard really well and let your body do its thing. Muscle memory and focus + feel will get you there. Maybe not John's level, but close enough I guess.
He literally is the practical adaptation of jazz (mention other sophisticated genres) and pop music. Pop music plays 4 melodies for 1000 people Jazz music plays 1000 melodies for 4 people
Please do not repeat this false cliche about Mayer that his audience is only teenage girls. He was teenager’s idol in early 2000s, now no teenager listen to Mayer, because Mayer is not in the mainstream pop/rap scene. The only teenagers that listen to him are probably young guitar players. Mayer’s fan base are mostly guitar fans and even if some of them are not, they still do enjoy guitar music.
It’s like John is playing for himself, just jamming out. That crowd is super lame, hipsters. He killed this cover and shredded the guitar at the same damn time!
This was a from the Made in America festival and most of the crowd came to see hiphop acts like Kanye and Kendrik. Id be very surprised if they can distinguish an electric guitar from a bass guitar.
I'm not a John Mayer fan but this performance is just....... Wow! I never knew he had such serious skills and that crowd.......... he deserved so much better.....
comments are really different now - 5 or 10 years ago the comments were all along the lines of "I (personally) know a 100 guitarists that can wipe the floor with john mayer" or berating him for writing a few catchy tunes that girls like
John Mayer is way too good for the public he has, just because of a few mellow songs people think he's a teenager singer. But this, as well as many other proofs, is a statement to his talent.
I don't know how it is back in the USA; went 6times to his concert in Amsterdam over the last 10 years.. It went from 'Wow, your body is a wonderland' audience, to a 'damn, play that damn solo a little longer audience'.. Over here, the youth is almost gone at his concerts!
Hey I 100% get it and feel it. I'm one of the few, but I know without a doubt if this guy was born 50 years earlier he would be talked about amongst the greatest of the 60s and 70s. I believe truly would have been considered one of the top 10 greatest ever, just flat out born in the wrong era. But he will always be one of my top 3 all time faves!
its also hes playing someone elses song not his own, and its not like hes playing the song in his own way, when a good guitarist covers another great guitarist songs he'll make his own, like when stevie ray vaughn did his own renditions of a few Jimi Hendrix songs, it was the same song but he brought his own style to it so its sounds different
this performance is average at best and people who dont see it dont understand real guitar skills or musicianship..... reason why they keep blabbering about jimi being the best ever and think that blues is so really hard to play i admire jimi because of his outstanding songwriting not his "incredible" skills he himself knew too well that he lacked tecnique and music theory...
yes he would be one of the greatest guitarist if he played like this in the 60s when the soloing was still very young technically but in 2014 he really can't get this tittle because now jimi hendrix songs can be played that way by anyone, and even there are some guitarists like john petrucci, andy timmons, paul gilbert and lot more who can play like this with their pinky so john mayer is just a good guitarist but definitely not one of the greatest
@@timschneekloth7720 just 6 months after dylan wrote it hendrix blew it up. Alot of people think this is an original hedrix song I did at first till I was educated on it. John does an amazing job here. I had goosebumps a few times. It's like jimmy soul came alive in that stratocaster and john is just releasing it summing him with the propper notes. Jimmy is long gone but his legacy lives forever.
Dwight Gaston And he didn’t play that and instead played Mannish Boy and All Along The Watchtower. John probably knew that the crowd gonna suck anyway so he just decided to play rock blues classic lmao
This guy really doesn’t get enough credit... incredibly gifted. Do people not realize how difficult it is to sing and play guitar simultaneously let alone shredding all the while?
John mayer always improvises his solo when he's doing cover song. He did that again when he played comfortably numb by pink floyd. That to me is like a huge statement of respect for the artist or band that he was covering. He din't wanna touch their legendary guitar solos instead he just make his own
This is actually a fairly common reaction at his concerts. He puts out his commercial stuff and that's what his fans want to see, but he ends up doing a lot of stuff like this at his concerts.
Paul Johnson John Mayer does best when’d he’s on tour with the dead. He’s a deadhead and a Psychedelic Rock fan in general and generally does a lot of live covers. And his young pop audience gets lost.
Well the point is that many ppl respect him as a guitarist but no guitarist would like to hear any of his commercial stuff so they don't go to his concerts. It's really weird. I would love to see him playing but no one of his songs but neon maybe
Eric Clapton said about JM "A true master of the guitar" he wasn't wrong! JM can play anything and play it right note for note or make it his own he's awesome!
aaron sterling is a super tasteful drummer and producer. he's basically doing this on his own. i have no idea who the other guy is or what he's doing there
@@joelcoool His name is Jim Keltner, and just to mention one of the bands he played with, there's this little band called The Beatles who played with Jim.
All these stupid pop fans are saying "play something good like ed Sheeran" when they don't know how historical and insperational this music is to artists now.
You read these things wrong Bill. It doesn't matter if it comes close to Jimi or not. It is just his take on a song which is much different than Jimi. I just enjoy the heck out of both and try not to draw comparisons. Now if this was a Jimi impersonator I would agree with you.
dontworrydon seems to me that Mayer feels the need to show off his technique but that it isn't always musical or fit the song. Jimi's solos were melodious and not just the need to show off his guitar wizardry. Just watch the clip where Mayer plays with Clapton on Crossroads and gets schooled by the old man on how to play a blues solo.
For all of the comments about the crowd being lame.. they DONT WANT TO HEAR THIS... they came to hear him play "Your body is a wonderland" . . I got dragged to a Maroon 5 / JM show like 10 years ago. MY buddy's wife wanted to see M5. So John comes on, he plays 3 or 4 songs then just lays into this insane Clapton cover..my buddy and I (both guitar payers) were like WHOA!!!! YES !!!! . . . a majority of the tween crowd headed for the bathroom...
I love all the old people commenting about how this "new generation" doesn't appreciate this song, yet here they are watching someone from the "new generation" pay an amazing tribute to this timeless song.
generic username I’ve never said that music or guitar playing is only for males..... i was just asking simple as that..... i am also a guitar player & even i am agreeing that there’s a strong possibility that you can rip me of by your guitar playing 🤟🏻🤯
John Mayer is a great guitarist no matter what ppl say. Period. And he just proved it here. He can play blues w the best of them . Not just a pop star. Always pays homage to the greats. Well done John.
From most of the negative commentary he receives I believe most are from those who are still stuck in the turn of the century...yea, hard to believe it's been over a decade since he was that baby-faced wonderland guy. :)
Bea Triss I know what you mean! I was very young when my parents bought me room for squares. and for the most part, i liked classic rock and what was modern rock back then, because i was just starting to become a guitar player. For some reason i had always listened to his stuff. People would always laugh when i mentioned John Mayer as a "Guitar Hero" figure. Now he's one of the biggest inspirations for musicians around today. He's not only keeping blues alive, but real music in general. And to see his influences. 2 drummers? definitely a Dead Head
I think most of that has to do with his song output. Most of his originals focus on his lyrical work and vocal melodies. He doesn't always emphasize his skill on the guitar unless its a live show or a cover.
I can’t help commenting again on this. It is absolutely sensational. My favourite RU-vid video. The guitar work - wait - mastery - is on a completely different level. Incredible. Only those who play guitar really know how special this guy is.
i,m sure that guitar maestro Jimi Hendrix must be happy when someone like guitarist John Mayer and Stevie Ray Vaughn plays a rendition of his soulful guitar rock classic of All Along the Watchtower. 🎼🎤🎸✝AMEN!
Christi Cowan i know, he is disgustingly underrated. i watched this whole show and i was so pissed off at the audience the entire time. like, its one thing if his music isn't your taste but i mean they all looked like idiots just standing there blank faced. like move around and have fun or at least smile. i would be rocking/freaking out if he played "row row row your boat" let alone frickin shredding to "all along the watchtower". too bad he wasted it on such a shit crowd.
LOL me too!!! he could stand there and hum and that would be fine. yes, it almost looked like some rolled their eyes. however, he was so out of place talent wise compared to what they had it was pathetic!!! almost an insult to JM to have to play in that line up! and then try and validate himself after Gravity. Oh John, your the best no need to validate yourself baby!!!
couldn't agree more! he was way out of the other lineup's league. this would be like him playing the vma's or something along those lines of trash. he doesn't need to validate himself with such low "musicians". He has never needed to be "in" with these relevant losers before and he sure as hell doesn't need them now. he has had almost 15 years of success by himself, he doesn't need to stoop low now.
Spoken like a true JM fan :) If u are on Facebook I am part of a group called John Mayer Knows Best. It is a closed group and closed because we don't want anyone in there to bash him. There is around 1300 people and it's a cool group. Lots of pics and latest info on John and videos. Check it out, we all love him!
Kevin Kosmo hahaha yes, though John definitely isn't skinny (he's pretty buffed) but he's really tall so that makes him look skinnier I guess. Nice comparison though lol
Johns covers are some of the best I’ve seen, he puts so much love into them you can tell how much Jimi, srv, and bb king etc meant so much to him. That crowd doesn’t understand, but their kids sure as hell love it!
Jesus Christ what an amazing emotional performance. He gives hope from one generation to another directly from his soul what a legend. Jimi Hendrix and John mayer you are hero's.
Chris Minneapolis You are wrong on so many levels. John Mayer knows what sells. But that doesn't mean for a second that his musical aptitude is to be questioned. Even his pop songs are different from mainstream pop artists. Pop helped him to come into the spotlight. From there on he has been able to inspire so many people to pick up the guitar. He has just nailed about every solo in every concert. He is a brilliant songwriter. Just go watch his interview for the release of New Light. Has collaborated with Barbara, B.B. King, Clapton and all of them have acknowledged his blues musicality. That must be for some reason. And if you say he has no soul, I don't even know how to respond to that. Maybe you are a rock.
@Chris Minneapolis "He has no soul, he has not suffered for his music, end of story" Well then if that's your argument you've totally convinced me mate
He is not only so talented, but only did so much work over the last years. This is a truly masterpiece. Although you still here his affection to Clapton and Hendrix, it is facinating to see his own style devloping over the years. Jimmy would be proud.
This feels like the scene in Back to the Future when Marty McFly slays the guitar and puts on a crazy good performance and the audience is standing their silent and confused. lol.
This is the best version after Hendrix. Hendrix’s is raw and original, nobody can beat that, but this version definitely fulfilled all the potential, polished yet still keeps all the energy. Well done.
@@gemof_gems True, Bob Dylan's is the original, but ngl it sounds like a stripped down cover after hearing Hendrix's version. There aren't many times when a cover blows the original out of the water, but that was one of them.
John Mayer is legend. Had heard some of his stuff for years but saw him three times with Dead & Co. That was the end all be all. Dude is out of his mind talented and puts everything into his playing. His greatness can't be denied!
@@susanlayton6758 Ah that is the greatest inspiration anyone could ever have as SRV was GOAT is GOAT and always will be ĢOAT. I am impressed by John though, I have never seen him before today.
It's obvious that this crowd did not realize what they were witnessing - an amazing performance by John Mayer that will go down in the history books as one of the greatest ever!
Go to any John Mayer video on RU-vid. ANY one. You'll find numerous comments of people hating on him. It's what insecure people do. I love Jimi as much as the next guy, but people act like he invented the guitar or something. He didn't even write this song, he covered it (amazingly, yes). Both artists, as well as others, are great in their own right, that's why they are where they are. Let the artists do what they do, not everything has to be so negative.
If the Guitar God , says he is a Master Guitarist and he doesn’t even realize how good he is, he must be really good. He can play the blues with the greats, jazz , rock and plays with the Dead. One of the most well rounded talented guitarists around today. IMHO
I remember when John mayer came out with that room for squares album and some buddy's made fun of me for taking a liking to his music.. Little did they know he would end up 1 of the very best..
Lav 2fa3 in holland they all suck pretty much, the lyrics they make here are so trash. They only talk about stabbing with knifes and fucking everyone’s mothers
Complexity doesn't necessarily make music better. It's how that melody connects with people emotionally. John doesn't try to fit as many notes as possible in every measure. What makes him so good to me is that he knows how to pick his notes to build a story that really connects with me. Listening to each of his albums bring me back to a previous chapter in my life or sometimes sheds new light every once in a while. Why do we have to judge everything to the point that it's either the best or it sucks. Enjoy it or find some music that connects with you.
He could have topped the charts with his electronic pop songs and won grammy writing simpler songs.instead he pay homages to the legends he adore.what a man .a true master of his craft
John Mayer is quite possibly one of the greatest guitarists alive. Not only his covers are good, but the tracks he wrote are some top stuff. I'll be genuinely surprised if he isn't looked up upon by musicians of the future generations much like Hendrix and Stevie Ray are now.
Axls Music World Not too many are actually better than Mayer in my book. The only couple that might pass him for me are Joe Bonamassa and Eric Clapton.
If future generations value mediocre, generic, vagina rock then you'll be correct. The reality is that he's an average guitar player at best who offers nothing new musically or technically and composes bland, effeminate music for tween girls.
I'm an learning guitarist and this just wants to make me cry that I'm struggling with this easy song and this guy is playing like a god of the guitar. It's also a shame that the crowd was so unethusiatic watching this guy play the guitar like a boss.
+Darth GAME I find that if someone is good at the guitar then the audience will be quite motionless in a state of wonder. Anyway, I would recommend Troy Grady's channel which has a lot of information about speeding up guitar playing by focusing on the picking itself. It really helped me anyway...
+Darth GAME If you're learning i wouldn't suggest this song. It's not easy to really get the right tone. Maybe try to learn riffs, but as a whole it will be difficult. However if you're patient, the long grind will shove you forwards months in your training. I always liked overchallenging myself on a new instrument, but many find slowing down part by part tedious.
+Darth GAME Few of us and not very many, will make a crowd go crazy like this. Especially a crowd this huge, we all should be so lucky as to play in front of a crowd this size in our life times. John is a master of not only pop but of guitar music. Bless John Mayer for his willingness to share his talent and his soul with us. Cuz it shows whenever he is on stage.
This guy is amazing . Anyone who does not see that must have never seen Hendrix live. Which I have 40 yrs. ago . He was unreal and John Mayer does him proud!!
JH has been dead almost 50yrs! I started high school the month he died. Those kids don’t appreciate his material. Different Time!! Closest thing we got to Jimi, right after that, was Robin Trower.
John Mayer is amazing. Music is in the fingertips, a special sensibility. Mayer has that, like Clapton, B.B., Hendrix. Also music is about being in the moment, not anyone can do that. Jimi Hendrix was one of the most “in the moment” musicians ever, the pure power of his sound can give you drug equivalent effects, can build new connections in your brain. Clapton still amazes me more than Mayer because he's so fucking good with the way he plays in time, the rhythmic aspect of his solos, it's so fucking clever. And BB also amazes me more cause his vocabulary is just perfect, he comes up with licks that blow my mind. Santana too, he's got a way of picking the notes that is so unique, his mind is different u know. But John got the fingers just as good as these guys', and I believe he will soon achieve the stature of Clapton and BB. He playing Call me The Breeze with Jools Holland blew my mind, sounds damn good. I'm tempted to say Hendrix is almost untouchable for his ability of playing so in the moment, like Coltrane maybe. Hendrix was a force of nature, he was always in the highest highs, and I'm not talking about drugs, I'm talking about the way his mind operated. I don't think he needed the drugs to get there.
What truly separates Mayer from Hendrix, Clapton, BB King and Santana is that Mayer is a mediocre songwriter. Those other guys were great. Mayer - simply put - can mimic the notes, but not write them.
Flike Are you actually serious..... Mayer is a far better songwriter than those guys, but maybe you don't dig his style, which is possible. But damn dude, take a look at Gravity, Belief, Come Back To Bed, Walt Grace Submarine Ride, Queen of Cali, St. Patricksday, Clarity, AND GO ON AND ON. John is a way better lyricist than those guys, + a better songwriter. OF COURSE it's partly a matter of taste, but in this case it's quite obvious.... No disrespect though :) I love Hendrix Clapton and BB! Santana I'm not so familiar with though
Flike I get u man. I think Mayer is a good songwriter, but he's a bit cheesy. I do respect more clapton songs like “Layla” or “Anyday” or “I looked away”, they make me cry and go to much deeper and more important places in my consciousness. Maybe Mayer hasn't lived enough. Music is really about living, it's where blues and jazz came from. Nothing wrong with pop though. For example, Prince does amazing and deep songs.
