People love the F-Zero series. It's natural that some games tried to compete with it. So how did Wipeout 64 do? I think it did pretty well. This game contains the coolest moment of this entire challenge so far, so stick around to see what happened.

It's really interesting to watch you discover this game for the 1st time in 2022. I was in the peak of my gaming hobby back when Wipeout 1, 2, 3, and 64 were released, and I put hundreds of hours into all 4 of these iconic 90s racers. In my opinion, this is the golden era of Wipeout. Wipeout 64 was the fastest of the 4 and sort of felt like a sequel to Wipeout XL with similar menus, ships, weapons, and overall graphical design. Love these games forever. Thanks for playing it, learning it, and respecting it.
@lozofspielereien8038
@lozofspielereien8038 9 месяцев назад
If I got that correctly, Wipeout 64 was originally supposed to be a port of Wipeout XL, but when they realized it wouldn't work out due to the different specs, they made somewhat a new game out of it. All the tracks are actually mirrored (and sometimes additionally shortened) versions from the previous two games. Add some new and unique content and that's how this became more like a game of its own.
@gamernaut8864
@gamernaut8864 9 месяцев назад
@@lozofspielereien8038 Woah that's cool. I actually never realized 64's tracks were mirrored and edited versions of tracks from Wipeout 1 and XL. I just read all about it in wiki. Crazy fun fact. Apparently some elevations and some corners were changed. I'm gonna go back to 64 and try to figure out the origin of each track. Thanks!
@lozofspielereien8038
@lozofspielereien8038 9 месяцев назад
@@gamernaut8864 You're welcome! I might be more familiar with the recent games (especially since I was more of a Nintendo kid, like I'd also assume about our reviewer guy here), but since I enjoyed the games, I got invested enough to check out all the other games in some way or another. I probably also learned about those mirrored tracks from the wiki, which I looked at to try and get a better overview / comparison of the tracks than you could in the games themselves. Since the wiki also has suggestions for which track mirrors which and I could kinda see the resemblance, I trusted their assumptions. Sadly, I don't know if minimaps for the 64 game exist, unlike for the other ones. But I'd assume it's interesting to find out what they have changed and what could be the reason for it (e.g. keeping the map smaller). I find it interesting that Wipeout 64 still has the largest grid size of the PS1 era. Of course it's no F-Zero X with its 30 racers, but that's why that game had to resort to much more simplistic graphics.

Fun fact I just learned: WipEout 64 has much higher quality audio than most other N64 games because instead of keeping full lengths songs on the cartridge, it has loops and pieces of songs and data telling the game which order to play them in. This saves space on the cartridge, allowing for higher quality audio and textures.

Heyo, a mostly silent viewer here! I'm glad for this series to learn more about what the N64 had to offer and which overlooked games might deserve a closer look. Despite apparently quite a few Wipeout fans showing up, I'm surprised they didn't give you more details about the game / series. Since there sadly doesn't seem to be a Grand Prix mode, I would have taken a look at some Single Races for the very least, since I feel like you have missed some stuff since the Challenges don't give you any choices. I don't think it would really affect the score much - I mean, if you can take about an hour for just one challenge each and still rate it a 9/10, that's the sign of a good game. But if you were to revisit it (or want to check out the series in general), here's some details I noticed that you didn't seem to realize plus some tidbits I found interesting. I'm no expert, having grown up with Nintendo as well and only played some of the later Wipeout games, but here we go: While there are different ships with different stats, in most cases when something seems faster, it's because it is actually a different speed class, like Mario Kart's various ccm. Additionally, since faster speeds would make the lap times shorter, the game somewhat balances it out with different lap numbers. Events with the slowest speed classes, Vector and Venom, have 3 laps. The faster Rapier events have 4 laps, while the very fast Phantom class (which you seemed to confuse with the ship) has 5 laps. You probably missed out on both of these since the challenges are fixed, not allowing you to change anything, including ship and speed class. Wipeout 64 was - like a lot of other racing games on the system - actually not competing with F-Zero X. It was released soon after F-Zero X and actually had two installments before Nintendo's AG racer jumped to 3D, the first one being released about 3 years before that. If I picked it up correctly, Wipeout 64 was originally going to be a port of the second game for N64 (both of the first games were multi-platform), but they quickly noticed it wouldn't work out, turning it basically into a "Wipeout 2.5". All the tracks in the game are actually mirrored, sometimes shortened and received a new paintjob with some new / different features on top of it. Even without Wipeout 64, the series would have 8 games, the last one being a launch title for the PS Vita back in 2012. It not only has more games than F-Zero, but also all of them are 3D, while F-Zero has mostly kept to Mode 7 style for its SNES and GBA games. The other Wipeout games actually got music from accomplished artists that were popular in the 90's clubbing scene, often D'n'B, like CoLD SToRAGE, Kraftwerk, Orbital and many more. While Psygnosis was already owned by Sony at that time, they were generous enough to allow them to make multi-platform games and even make this semi-port, which could technically be seen as the only Wipeout game not released for a Sony platform and also the last game playable on a non-Sony platform. The next game was exclusive for PS1 and Psygnosis got renamed into Liverpool Studios, signifying that they had become a full-fledged second-party developer for Sony. I could imagine that Sony saw Wipeout as their counterpart to Nintendo's F-Zero. Psygnosis was already an accomplished studio for more than a decade. I was surprised when I found out they were responsible for the Lemmings!

The symbols in this game are actually quite logical when you consider the power up they represent. I think the Designers Republic did a fantastic job and really gave the Wipeout series a unique finish which was way ahead of its time. I played the shit out of this game when it came out; I was about 13 and visually it had a big effect on me, not to mention the fantastic music which was a world away from the dreadful UK pop charts. It's a shame that the studio behind the games is gone; there have been several imitations in the years since but nothing comes close to the alchemy of Psygnosis and the DR. It was fun while it lasted!

As a huge WipEout fan, massive respect for sticking with this game and learning to handle the craft well! One small note, Vector, Venom, Rapier, and Phantom are the racing speed classes, not the names of the ships themselves. (No worries!) The teams/ships are FEISAR, AG-Systems, Auricom, Qirex, and the hidden ship is the Piranha 2! (There's a TON of lore behind the teams and the world of the WipEout universe. It's interesting stuff!) Again, great video, and massive respect! :D Oh, and Combo Challenge 5 really is evil! I never thought to beat it like that, and I can't believe you made it to the finish line! If you're a fan of the oldschool WipEout games, check out Ballistic NG on Steam. It's a huge love letter to WipEout, with full workshop support for custom ships, tracks, sounds, etc!

It felt so strange listening to the commentary for this as someone who's known the series for a good number of years before this point. Hearing the various speed classes being called the ships themselves was... odd, to say the least. That and the comment about the Shield Raider (AG-S Super) being useless when it was actually the most broken weapon in W64 (it instantly leaves its target at 1% Shield and restores some of your Shield, meaning you can just lightly poke them and they explode).

That challenge of course did a number on me too, but the satisfying ending was worth it. I think putting ridiculous challenges like those truly push our limits and persistence in video games, which is something we aspire when we find a new game. And I thought the racing was pretty cool. In the end, I exchanged this game for Diddy Kong Racing and I never saw it again. Nonetheless, I was proud to complete it.

It is weird that the hardest challenge still has two more after it. I could even see it as challenge six and then the unlocked seventh one is easier, but being where it’s at does led credence to the idea that it was unintentionally made that difficult. Maybe when it was tested someone got ridiculously lucky so their time to complete fell in line with the rest of the levels (though you’d think having to kill eight racers would seem ridiculous in general). Either way, great work Thab!
