BEAUTY STANDARDS AROUND THE WORLD... PROBLEMATIC?

We tend to think it’s just us that have to deal with the unrealistic, sometimes toxic beauty standards - but in fact women WORLDWIDE are struggling to live up to their country’s definition what ‘beauty’ looks like. What's interesting is that while you may not fit into YOUR country’s ideal ‘beauty standard’ - you may perfectly and naturally fit into a DIFFERENT country’s beauty ideal! It just shows that even though we’re told that there’s only ONE way to look in order to be considered beautiful - that’s not the truth. In japan crooked teeth (yaeba teeth) are considered cute and women pay hundreds of dollars to have their canine teeth protrude, whereas women here in the west pay THOUSANDS of dollars to have their teeth made perfectly straight! In the west we’re obsessed with being tan, yet in other parts of the world they desire fair skin so much that they use whitening products - while we’re over here using self tanning products! How wild is that! It kind of indicates that no matter what we look like as women, it's never going to be 'good enough' for society. Not to mention that what is considered the 'ideal standard of beauty' is always changing - so I guess the only thing we can do is (as lame as it sounds) be ourselves!

The beauty standard is always the rich people looks. When the poor worked outside and the rich inside, pale skin was preferred. When Travelling became a thing among those who could afford it, tanned skin was the beauty standard.

THIS. when only the rich could afford to eat comfortably, being chubby was the beauty standard. now that the rich have more access to personal trainers, clean diets, etc while the poor have to rely on cheaper & more unhealthy foods, being skinny is the beauty standard.

So true. It’s all about looking like we got 💸. Come to think about it, many of us are quite wealthy compared to the rest of the world. But there will always be even higher levels of “prestige for purchase”, because that’s how the world makes money... by deceiving people to want more and more

For ckooked teeth, I heard a lot of people who lived in Japan (japanese and non-japanese) say that they had never heard of such a beauty standart until they saw a video talking about it on youtube. Knowing that I look nothing like the american models on magazines and on instagram, I turned to Japanese models and magazines. Because that’s where I look more like. The thing is, I never once saw a tan japanese model to look up to. At least one who was naturally tan like me. So I hated my skin so much. I wanted to be light skinned. I love history too! I’m very lucky to be currently renovating an early 15th century house in the English countryside, and feel extremely privileged to be living in a building that has seen more than 600 years of human habitation. Also it’s really amazing what you uncover... for example we found a whole load of animal bones underneath the sitting room floor just last December!

This topic is so interesting! I was always insecure about having relatively darker skin for Japanese and thought I accepted my skin color now, but listening to China and India’s beauty standards made me feel insecure about it again because I realized this was not only Japanese thing (having pale skin is beautiful) I am glad to learn this tho😊 Looking forward to next video about beauty standards of body shape!

@@exe8160 Can’t deny the fact that India is colourist, but we literally have every skin tone under the sun. I always say we come in a spectrum of colours. We have people who are as white as white, really dark skinned and medium tones too. One cannot underestimate the diversity our country has and its sad only fair skin is coveted here.

Yes! This feels so right. Me with my white Irish freckled skin always getting made fun of growing up asking if I ever go outside or saying that I look sick.. started using fake tan then getting made fun of for looking orange. When hearing about how China embraces pale skin and thinks it’s beautiful I’m like why do I have to be in the western world right now. Not to mention my scrawny body when I eat more than most and curves are trending. The things people say don’t realize how much it hurts. We cannot change some things my whole family is that way and it really does hurt. Getting made fun of for skin colour for being “too white” is racist & no one sees it that way.

I love your videos so much. I appreciate someone reminding us that beauty is subjective, arbitrary and in many cases transient and ever evolving. I do wish however that if you did plan to touch on African beauty you either gave it the time and attention it deserves (given the size and diversity within the continent) or simply omitted it. Disappointing to see you touch one a singular and very specific group.
