What is Foam Rolling and Why Do Your Lower Back, Upper Back and IT Band NEED it?
Foam rolling is a form of self-myofascial release, which is just a fancy-schmancy term for self-massage. Foam rolling (and other forms of self-massage or tissue work) releases the tightness and knots that form within the muscle by helping to elongate the muscle tissue by breaking up scar tissue and any trigger points.
Often foam rolling can not get to the deepest layers of tissue because it is such a blunt / broad object (as compared to a softball or lacrosse ball) but it is still an effective way to start working on knots and trigger points.
What’s a trigger point? You can think of it like a little knot, or patch of extra dense tissue that causes pain and problems in your body. A trigger point is an area in the muscle that can lead to pain in other areas of the body. For example, a trigger point in the back muscle could be causing your neck pain.
Foam rolling also to slowly decrease the tone (density) of your muscles. This increases blood circulation and even nerve "flow" and helps speed up the muscle recovery process. A side benefit of foam rolling (and tissue work in general) is that it will also help with flexibility - something that we could all use some more of!
Try out this basic foam roller sequence and when you are ready you can graduate to some slightly more targeted tissue exercises.

@@GotROM I follow a fitness expert that recommends it. I'm just starting back with working out. Your video was the only video on RU-vid that I feel was truly speaking to my beginner level. When I tried the foam roller as shown by the fitness expert I follow, I could barely put pressure on my legs! Your video was super helpful!

Thanks for this video. I'd just recently saw it mentioned on a SparkPeople post and had no idea what this was. Your description was especially useful. This looks like it will be very useful as I progress on my fitness journey. Now just need to figure out how to choose & where to find foam roller for my current body weight. Thanks again

Making your quads less tight will help. But there are additional things you'll need to do. My 45-day "Hip Flexor Flexibility" program would fix APT.

Good question! There are specific exercises for pelvic tilt, this one is great for opening up the body.

Hey Zigu! This is the light/begginer intensity foam roller. The size varies and it usually depends on where and who you buy it from.

Hi, I just tried to retrieve The Beginner's Guide to Foam Rolling and got this error message: Error 502 Ray ID: 3ca1bd43b1bf52fc • 2017-12-08 18:20:33 UTC In other words, I was unable to access it. I tried twice.

Can you do more quads with form roller.? I had a follow up MRI from a quad strain and it shown that I have lean muscles still after physical therapy and my normal routine .

Yes you can do your quads on the roller. You can also use barbells and kettlebells and the Trigger Point Quadballer. All good tools.

Yeah...there are much better ways to work on that area. :-) Have you tried the "Body back buddy on the Ql?" It's on this channel and in my 45-day "Athletes Back" program. It's a doozy!

2 minutes is the minimum dose :-) “Until you stop making change” is more accurate :-)
