Easily the best plastering content on RU-vid. Such a great job, and thank you for actually showing some real timings. So many other plasterers tell us it’s all about timing, and then never mention how long anything has taken!

Best plastering skim video's on utube. Very well explained 👏. I do few trades got bored doing one and like to learn new stuff. I bought a refina spat, brilliant piece of kit, absolute game changer for flatting walls. I came from fitted skirting and dado rails. So number one for me a wall is flat, the timings in skim is important and i have learnt from your video's Alex 👌🇮🇪

@@AlexMorleyPlasteringI am watching it fully again. It will be my first time attempting plastering on a tight budget... 1) could you please recommend a trowel? 2) also would i need a Ultra Flex Finishing Trowel? I would really appreciate it, thank you in advance.
@AlexMorleyPlastering
@AlexMorleyPlastering 3 года назад
@@jizzy5425 thanks for your message. Tough one tbh. Depends on your budget. Really a Spatula or Speedskim is more useful for a novice. Either a 800mm or 1m. Trowels, personally I prefer carbon steel, as they wear in quicker but with stainless steel there is less maintenance. I would probably get something like a Nela MIDI Flex, or the Refina equivalent in 14” and a second hand 14” plastering trowel of eBay. Already worn in. Saves so much time for the same price. If your new I would look into sponging though. Much easier to get a good finish.

great finish alex ... top notch......one thing wouldn't you consider a X stand and spot board instead of bending down all the time ....or your just used to the bucket system .....
@AlexMorleyPlastering
@AlexMorleyPlastering 2 года назад
I so have a spot stand. The problem is because we are often mixing 2.5-3.5 bags at a time, you can’t life the bucket. And the board would have to be massive. So there is little to no gain. Bending down isn’t really an issue. Not compared to stepping off a hop up atleast.

Brilliant tutorial, one of the best I’ve seen. I am still learning but managed to plaster a whole room at various stages. Just one small wall makes me sweat like I’ve run a marathon, along with swearing and dropping plaster everywhere but the end result turns out pretty good. I always end up with several tiny dings or hollows that I use filler on, is that usual for all plasterers? The speed skim has made it so much easier.
@AlexMorleyPlastering
@AlexMorleyPlastering 3 года назад
Glad to hear the videos are helping. The dings will become less often as time goes on. Take your time, use the far left on the bucket as it’s drying. As it’s less noticeable when it dries.

Hi Alex, how does your paddle attach to the mixer, is it threaded? It was super quick the way you detached it from the mixer after you knocked up the plaster …

When you're flattening the wet plaster from the top/bottom to the centre, doesn't that end up with more plaster in the centre?

Do you recommend up and down over side to side to flatten with the spat? I heard you mention the side to side in your other video to avoid vertical marks 👍🏻
@AlexMorleyPlastering
@AlexMorleyPlastering 3 года назад
Side to side only on VERY high walls. The latest video they are over 5m high. Standard walls 2.4m up and down is my preference. You can go side to side aswell, but the priority should be ⬆️⬇️ In my opinion. It gives a better finish.

Hello again mate. Been watching this a few times ahead of my next practice. When you showed your phone with 17 mins on after applying the first coat, was that 17 mins from when you put your first bit on the wall? Or from when you finished mixing? I noticed you chatted to the camera for a bit after it was first mixed. Is it fine to sit in the bucket for a small while, and does it not go off anywhere near as quickly as when first put on the wall?
@AlexMorleyPlastering
@AlexMorleyPlastering 2 года назад
Hi Marcus Looking at the video, at 17min point i had just finished applying the first coat. I had not mixed up for the 2nd at this point. If you are new to plastering you want to mix up when you need the plaster rather than letting it sit around. To give you as long as you can with the gear. Hope this helps.
@MarcusT86
@MarcusT86 2 года назад
@@AlexMorleyPlastering Sorry mate, I was referring to just the first coat. I just meant can it last a little while in the bucket and does your timer start once it hits the wall, or once it's mixed and sitting in the bucket? When I practice as soon as it's mixed I'm panicking it's already going off like a rocket just by sitting in the bucket, and I'm rushing to get it on the wall asap!

Which trowel you using to do your 2 finishing trowels?
@AlexMorleyPlastering
@AlexMorleyPlastering 2 года назад
Most of the time I use a carbon steel trowel up to the final pass. Then run a Nela Plastic If I use a flexible trowel it would be afte the 1st wet trowel. And most of the time it’s the Nela Midi. However we are resting out the refina Superflex 3.
