I've been considering joining the military as a photojournalist or video journalist for some time now. I'm glad to see that the Air Force has provided you with so many amazing opportunities! I will be sure to watch your other videos in my continued research.
I am a Shs student and I am in humms strand, I have been thinking of what I want in collage as a course and I wanted criminology originally but that course is only for police. So I changed my course into going for journalism but At first I never thought of what my job as for journalist and Now I found this air force journalist. It is so hard finding something that you are interested in, specially when you have no interest at anything and thank god the journalist course can provide in military service aswell I hope I can be a journalist in the air force as well.
So helpful! What is the air force job for editing the videos? Or are/were they also broadcast journalists and they just ended up in the editing section?
Thank you! Ans I shoot and edit the videos. And since we just underwent a merger, I also take photos and edit them. We have many tasks, our new job title is public affairs specialist.
Does this field offer 4 year contracts, or is it only a 6 year?. This job really has caught me interest, but I feel a 6 year contract is kinda long. If you can answer my question that’ll be great, thank you.
If you want to be in public affairs although you can’t, what is the next best thing? I want to be in public affairs but I’m scared I won’t make the cut invade it’s super competitive, so what are some good options?
Any tips to book this job? I qualify for it with my asvab score and have years of civilian experience in this field as an actor, producer, editor, writer, camera operator etc. I also have a bachelors degree. Can I wait for this to become available?
Great Video! I wanted to ask I don't know much about camera at all but Im interested in them and I believe this job would suit me the best. Does it matter if I know anything about them or is it required to know about them before I join?
how does tech school work? did you have to go to a tech school before enlisting? i’m confused about that part! btw this is an amazing video and it’s making me consider joining!
Hi there! You go to tech school after you complete basic training. From Lackland (where basic is) they will either bus you there or fly you. Since my tech school for a public affairs was in Maryland, they dropped us off at the airport, gave us all the necessary documents like plane tickets and we flew to Maryland. There are different tech schools based on the job you get. You can find all of that on the Air Force website. Hope this helped! And thank you!!
This is a great video! I am very interested in this career path but I am confused on how exactly you got this job? I’ve watched the full video, and you stated that you do not yet have a degree. That’s great news for me because I also do not have a degree yet in this field but I would love to gain this type of experience. Although, when I looked up requirements for the Public Affairs Specialist job you have, it does say that you need a bachelor’s degree in something along the lines of journalism or communications. How would one get this opportunity without having a degree? Can you share more details on how you landed this job and the steps within that process. Please and thank you so much!
Thank you so much! When looking up jobs on the Air Force website make sure to specify enlisted jobs because if it states it’s an officer position then you will need a bachelor’s degree. Since our career field JUST merged it may not be reflected online yet, it may still say photojournalist or broadcast journalist. I told my recruiter I was very interested in this job and I listed it as my number one choice at MEPS. You have to select 8 jobs in order of preference and once you select a date you’re able to leave for basic, they select your job based on the availabilities for that time frame. Highly recommend talking with a recruiter and letting them know you want a job in public affairs 😌 hope this helped!
@@MikaylaRoseDaly Ohh ok, I see. Thank you so much! This helped a lot. I’m from Florida and this may be a shot in the dark but if you know of any recruiters (maybe your old recruiter) or any other Airmen who are in Florida which I can reach out to for help reaching this goal please lmk. My IG is @_Lyciaaa
I'm preparing to join and I grew up doing video work with my dad (he operated a local TV station in my hometown) and I've always wanted this job in the military but every recruiter from every branch has basically told me how impossible it is to land it. Is there a way to showcase your work to increase your opportunity of being offered the job?
How cool! And there’s actually a need right now so I would definitely put it down regardless of what your recruiter says. I’m not sure how it is now because I enlisted in 2017 but I had to do a voice audition, and because I did well on that, it increased my chances. Also, score high on the ASVAB. Unfortunately there isn’t a way to showcase your work before but that would be really neat if people could. Hope this helped!
@@MikaylaRoseDaly ah yes, the voice audition. I heard about that. I'm from the south but I don't have a heavy accent (my accent can be heard when saying my I's like light or eyeball, etc.). I run into people all the time in surrounding areas that ask me if I'm a yankee lol.
@@MikaylaRoseDaly also, yes this did help a lot . I'm super I pumped that there is a need. Do you have any studying tips for the asvab? I got some pdf's from my recruiter but I've been out of school since 2011 lol
@@heathjackson4498 i’m glad it helped! And my advice would be to get on some of the study sites like quizlet or khan academy and practice your algebra 1 and 2, as well as reading comprehension. If you’re trying for an electric or mechanical job those questions are more specific but they’re pretty basic like “what’s a stud in the wall?” “What does the number in V4 mean?”... things like that.
@@MikaylaRoseDaly awesome. Thanks for the info and I'll definitely check out the link in the description to view some of your work. I've filmed a couple of weddings this year so I may upload those here at some point.
We get paid the 1st and 15th of every month. We’re salary based so even if you take leave or are on lockdown for COVID, we still get paid. We get our base pay (the pay scale can be found online) then additional money for rent, utilities, and groceries. Since I’m stationed overseas I also get extra pay called COLA.
@@MikaylaRoseDaly I have a design and visual communications certificate from my technical high school and have individual certifications on multiple Adobe products so you think that would help at all. PS I’m currently in the Air Force already but am looking to cross train in a few years
That's confusing... Did broadcast journalism merge with public affairs as well? Or are you saying they're the same job? If so, why are they listed as two different jobs?
