Would love a series on training/programming for the Highland Games. I have been training powerlifting for the last couple of years and got turned on to the games recently.

Honestly, I'm not sure it would help. Mike and Mindy had a book and very few people took advantage. I just did O lifts and loaded carries and seemed to do really well.

Great video coach. What’s your opinion on the zercher squat vs the front squat for Highland Games purposes? I’m new to sport and throwing in general (self confessed noodle arm) but love me some zercher squats

Well, if you do the games more like a strong man, then stick to what you’re doing. If you want to be a more of a Thrower, I would do front squats this, of course it’s just my opinion.

Hi, Dan, Am I too old to take up the Highland Games? I've lifted heavy for about 40 years. At 54, I can still squat and deadlift around 500 lbs. I am 6' tall and weigh 215 lbs. I threw shot put in elementary school in 1981, but that is the extent of my throwing experience. My shoulders, back, knees, etc., are in good shape, so I don't want to wipe them out. Is is too late for me to learn try this sport? If not, should I find a coach? I used to lift at Steve Pulcinella's gym Iron Sport in PA and he was a pro highland games athlete. Perhaps I should consult with him. However, I would appreciate your opinion because I value your expertise, having read many of your books. Thanks, Heath

A lot of the games have Masters and even subgroups of Masters, so yes.

@@DanJohnStrengthCoach Thanks, Dan. My ego wants to go for the heavy stuff, but my brain thinks that the masters level would be a better choice. Ha!

For a guy who doesn't see the need for maces or clubs, that hammer drill looks very like club/mace work.
