Interesting question, in summary, both berberine and fiber can contribute to better glucose metabolism. While berberine directly affects insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake thru a critical enzyme AMPK, fiber helps regulate blood sugar levels by slowing down digestion and promoting satiety. Incorporating both into one's diet may offer synergistic benefits.
I haven't been diagnosed for prediabetes but because I have some symptoms like extreme tiredness, some blurry eyes and hungry all the time, I thought I might be hypoglycemic so I got a two week CGM for two weeks, surprise! I found my blood sugar was running over 100 to maybe 140 all during the day, fasting only about 104-110 and still having the symptoms. I did the blood tests and my fasting was 103 and A1c 5.5, she said it's fine. But I still have the symptoms and I can tell its when I have elevated numbers even though they are not very high. I guess I'm asking is this normal? I am now going to start with the fiber, I am a plant based vegan ( had changed to white rice (the family prefers and I have been doing less tofu and beans) anyway I have had several bladder infections in the last 6 months and took several antibiotics to clear them up, fingers crossed that is over. After seeing this video from the good Dr. Dave I think fiber is the way to go (no pun intended but pretty funny). Thanks again.
Thanks Doc! I was Type 2 and now Type 1, and have been an Insulin dependent. I stopped with Metformin 500mg XR, then when went to Type 1 doc said no need to take so I went to Berberine and took 500mg, with not much change from Metformin, I now think I should have gone to 500 x3. I will try that... Thanks
@@peter56387 Type 2 doesn't revert to Type 1, but having Type 2 doesn't make you immune to getting Type 1. They are actually two completely different diseases, and you can get both.
not all fiber is created the same. psyllium which is what most people take, Konsyl. Konjac or glucomman absorbs 50 times it's weight and is the best fiber for weight loss. Berberine and fiber are not mutually exclusive. One can take both. Amla should be considered with berberine. ;)
thank you so much, doc! i’m most definitely going to try that. my only concern and down side of these supplements are the side effect of gastrointestinal problems as i’m already suffering from that severely. I get indigestion and bloated with pain at the back of my neck and dizziness. not entirely sure what’s causing this. anyhow thought i’ll give this a try a see how it goes, i shall try with fiber as my stomach is already familiar with fruits and vegs that i’ve been eating. hope it won’t give me much of a problem, but yeah. very much appreciated for the video, it’s clear illustrated 🙏🏼
Good info. BUT the fiber product promoted is psyllium powder. Psyllium slows absorption but it is not a prebiotic. There is no fermentation. This is good if you have sibo but it will not give the prebiotic benefits which were included in the comparison. Other sources such as inulin would be the way to go for that.
When I see a channel like this. So knowledgeable I am so happy!! Fiber is so effective for fatty liver disease ! If you can eat 100g of fiber everyday you will feel invisible. No diabetic, no cancer, no anxiety no headaches
Hey Dave, I just got my blood work back. I have type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. I'm on 25mg of jardiance and 10 mg of Glipzide. I'm taking 1200mg of berberine and 1200mg of Ceylon Cinnamon. will this help the jardiance with lowering my glucose which was "188" and my cholesterol which was "239". My A1C was a "8" so i'm trying to get it down to a "5" A1C. I'm also taking 200mcg of vitamin K2 and 900mg of Omega 3 fish oils. My goal is to reverse my type 2 diabetes and lower my cholesterol. Your thoughts?
i think for keeping the blood sugar low and to lose some weight, the fiber is a good idea to combine it with a protein shake. if it is the right fiber mixture, it gives you an instant feeling of satiety that not every protein shake does when taken without fiber.
My husband has been a diagnosed diabetic since 1991. His blood sugars were controlled until 2021 when he got a bacterial infection that almost killed him. He has been unable to control his blood sugar since then even on the keto diet. Berberine in high doses and dihydroberberine in high doses did not stabilize his blood sugar. If he falls off the keto wagon (because we travel a lot and he gives into temptation to have a piece of toast!), his blood sugar skyrockets. Once he has regained his keto "legs" again, he still experiences spiking blood sugar levels. Fiber seems to be more effective for him than any form of berberine but fiber is not enough for his problem. He is now taking 750 XR Metformin 3 times a day. I recently purchased Curalin in the hopes this will help his problem.
@@themessianicmessage konjack root. There's also dhea, and other animo acids that help. Maybe I didn't take high enough berberine but it didn't affect my BS. Type 1
Well, we'll see, Been taking dihaydroberberine for 3 months, Together with Myo-&D-Chiro-Inositol. After stopping metformin. Fasting blood sugar before starting was 8.2 - 8.6 before lunch and dinner. For the last 10 weeks my fasting blood sugar before lunch and dinner has been 6.2 - 6.7. Tomorrow large blood panel at my GP's. I couldn't tolerate Berberin HCL, but dihydroberberine is just fine.
There are different types of fiber, can you please tell us which fiber was used in all of the studies? Also, does taking all this fiber before a meal block the absorption of nutrients??
What do you know about this thing I heard: That when you start berberine, it may take a few (or more) days before it really starts working? You mention the body getting used to it in terms of GI but I didn't hear you mention in terms of reducing blood/glucose.
A few of us that took Berberine had a lot of side effects. Additionally my doctor stated that people who take Statins must be very careful with Berberine Interactions Any thoughts. Thanks.
Great question! I'm not aware of any adverse reactions by combining the two, but always check with your doctor before starting a new treatment. Here's a relevant article on the topic: Yang L, Zhu W, Zhang X, Zhou X, Wu W, Shen T. I have hypothyroidism and take medication for it . Taking berberine had made it worse and I gained more weight. So it could possibly effect other medication for sure
Hi. Joey here from Adelaide South Australia. Great info. I take 2 NUZENA 1200mg Berberine per day and it's been the BEST for me to date as a Type2 diabetic. The fibre you suggest has an interesting WARNING: Consuming this product can expose you to chemicals including LEAD which is known to the State of California to cause cancer.....Any comments please. Joey
Good point! I sometimes forget that not everyone is used to the legal climate here in California. Now I hardly notice them anymore. Even coffee has the same warnings: www.wsj.com/articles/starbucks-coffee-brands-fight-california-ruling-on-cancer-warnings-1523880000
Q. Do either of these help lower blood sugars when your sugars are naturally low? That is, you don't have diabetes or pre-diabetes .. let's say your A1C is like 5.0? Will it lower it further?
What would happen if you took berberine and fiber. You would have to figure out the levels of each amount you would take I would probably be a great combination to take both.
When I click on more for info on you in this video, a page popped up that says description at the top but it is totally blank. Is it a problem with my RU-vid settings do you think?
With what medicines does fiber intake interfere? I've heard it can and so I try to time my fiber intake to 2 hours before or after taking my medicine. However, I have to take my medicine with food, so taking the fiber before breakfast and supper is out of the question -- if it interferes. I don't know if it does or not, so I go on the assumption that it does and try to time my fiber intake before lunch and later in the evening, often missing doses because of what's going on at those times.
@@DeniseHlavaty are you just being cautious or do you have a reason? It takes forever to see a doctor in the UK. If I have to wait it will be at least a month to 6 weeks before I get an appointment.
@@perserverance333 No Almonds as it has high oxalates and toxins unless you soak in sea salt for 8 hours and air dry then in the oven on low temp 130° for about 6 to 8 hours. Be very careful with nuts that are high in oxalates .
Good question. I like psyllium because it's been widely researched in diabetes and it's also widely available. Here's a coupon code for a local California brand I like: www.naturlax.com/a/drdaveclayton
Yeah Berberine in South Africa cost $22 dollars for a month supply whilst metformin is only $2.10. Have been using Berberine for ages with no side effects. However 1500mg of Berberine per day will cost me $33 dollars per month, which is a lot in rand terms. Trying metformin and so far no side effect. So is metformin safe to use?
@@ajm1162 I've heard *some* studies found a negative cardio-exercise effect from metformin. That said, I've taken extended release version for years. Effective for blood glucose control, but causes me diarrhea.

It's a common misconception. Our digestive tract is designed to work on way more fiber than I'm recommending. You'll get plenty of nutrients even with the extra fiber - I promise!
Why not the more highly bioavailable dihydroberberine? I take 2 delayed release tabs/day night and morning. availale from the Oregon company who make enduracin. They are making it after a request from a research group at the University of Oregon who were investigating berberine efficacy.
It's a good question. Given that they work in similar fashion I wouldn't expect to see much additional benefit in combination. Always check with your doctor! Thanks for watching :)
@@drdaveclayton Thanks for the response. While she typed Berberine into my record after telling her about it, my doctor asked me how to spell it. I don't think she'll have an answer.
You sure can but you might be wasting $$$$ on that berberine. The same fiber blocks or slows sugar absorption, so it does with all other nutrients. Yr berberine will partly bond to the fiber and go down the toilet. Do not take supplements/ vitamins with fiber supplement.
There's not much fiber in tablets. I'd recommend using a powdered form. Check the links in the description for my recommendations. Thanks for watching!
Most fiber tablets have only a gram or so of fiber. I would recommend using a powder so you can get enough fiber to make a difference. I left a link in the description. Thanks for watching!
people average 16 to 17 grams of fiber per day?!?! Like wow! If that doesn't indicate a poor diet I don't know what would. Should be getting at least 20 grams per 1,000 calories and that should be from food, not supplements. No wonder why some people are in such poor health.
Why are modern humans so deficient in chromium. Back in early 1900;s people ate 1 or 2 pounds of sugar a year. Advance hundred years humans now consume a hundred + pounds a year. insulin needs chromium to operate function. Modern humans are now using a 100X the amount of chromium there ancestor's ate thus the boom in diabetes. Chromium absorption is very very hard to get in to the body only 1 or 2% ATE ever gets in for function. A hundreds ago that was close to enough but now it's not close at all. So what is diabetes it is a chromium deficiencies. Too get daily 20 + mcg of chromium in body function you need a hundred times that amount. if you sweat a lot or exercise or eat tons of carbohydrates in addition to sugar you need more then that for energy insulin work 🌝🏌🏇🚴⛳🏊
