These are my favorite Star Citizen budget flight sticks. I recommend the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro for right-handed people as a combat stick in a single or duel stick config. I recommend the Thrustmaster 16000 for throttle (Due to a previous typo I may forever refer to this as the Thrustmeter 1600.
These Sticks work well in windows 10 and windows 11.
The setup is simple and I walk through the basic ideas of how to setup one and duel sticks. Please configure and reconfigure in a way that works best for you.
The walk-through shows you how I set up the Logitech as a combat stick, and then added the throttle for extra functionality and control. I will be doing separate reviews of all the SC controller options I have available to me and share the few that I have not tried yet.
My flight stick journey: I started with duel Thrustmaster, realized I loved Star Citizen, and then invested in a full Virpil duel stick, throttle, and Console setup. For anyone starting out with sticks on a budget, I recommend this configuration. This budget setup will eventually be the sticks I put on my file server running 1080p for when my friends and family visit.

I just dug my old Extreme 3D Pro out of the shed and refurbished it for Star Citizen but I'm using it left handed in a HOSAM setup, which is surprisingly not terrible.

I love my 3D pro, actually put my X52 pro and rudder pedals in the box for the time being and just use it for ease and less stuff on the desk. Other than the fact it I got it used back in 2013 and some the the buttons on the base are getting wonky. Gotta push the #7 button kind of at an angle to maybe get it to work. Still use it though just remapped the keyboard keys to be easy enough to hit to make up for it.

I know it's not flashy but I bought a Logitech attack 3 when I was 15 for $20. Been using it for 12 years and it's still just as smooth as the day I bought it!

I keep seeing youtubers recommending the thrustmaster but everyone I've talked to that has had one, either in org or in verse, has the z axis go out in the first year.

They're no longer worth it for the price, imo. Not to knock this man's grind, but I would cross reference some RU-vid tech channels as well as experienced redditor flight sim hobbyists before settling on a thrustmaster.

It’s easy to repair the 16000 z axis. check out the utube videos. I have to do it about twice a year, it takes about 20 minutes.

I have been hearing some things about that recently. Unfortunately z axis will be fragile on most joysticks until certain price points. This is because people naturally over torque with wrists when feeling Adrenalin. I would be interested if those people buy a replacement, warranty or change devices all together.

I've been doing joystick/keyboard with the Logitech 3D Extreme Pro. I so far have not been able to get used to a second stick. I do have a Logitech G13 set up on the left hand as well, and it has a little thumb stick that I set for throttle and strafe, but even that I've been having trouble adapting to (I'll use the G13 for ground vehicles).

@@SurvivorToHero Yeah I'm not sure if it's because that second stick is another 3D extreme Pro which is designed for a right hand, or whether it's the whole stick thing itself. And also, I'm not a fighter pilot so maybe there's no need for a stick and if anything I would go with a throttle (which would also be good with Microsoft Flight Simulator).

I like my Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. Very good one for the money. I got mine on Amazon for 19.99$ on prime day. Recommended for beginners and people on a budget like me.

i have been looking for a cheap hotas setup to see if id be into it for YEARS and never have i heard or seen the 3d pro. ive been to Logitech's website too and still have never seen it, im a dumbass or something but again thank you for showing me something new

these were my starter sticks.. the logitech with more fire buttons make a better right stick than the thrustmaster.. i now have dual vkbs but if you're on a budget you can use these

Absolutely, Honestly that is the only way I FPS. Though with the virpil and the vkb you can do that with more controller like feel. I prefer the K&M for any "Actor"/FPS like game play. The sticks are for ships and maybe vehicles, depending on my mood.

You can not have to use about 90% of the keybinds on the stick if you get something like VoiceAttack and HCS Voicepacks. I speak a lot more commands than I press on the joystick.

I use joytokey to assign the side button on each flight stick to modifiers, then its just a matter of holding down say my left thumb on the button while selecting something on my right flight stick, so long as you assign stuff so its more or less logical/related to that sticks other buttons it works out. Thats with a dual stick setup.

Flight movement, on the joystick slider for speed limiter. It is inverted for me?

I am going to do another video soon that goes over the settings to simplify things. For immediate fun, go to the options menu, Select CONTROLS. On the bottom right of the screen change the control to the joystick of choice (my throttle is Joystick / HOTAS 2. Once here click on the inversion settings. Select FLIGHT -> Flight Movement and change the Flight Strafe (Forward/Backward)

SC has like 4 joystick tabs for whatever reason. you gonna have to apply the inversion on all to make it sure that its applied.

Love the question. Short answer, no but it is on my to do list for my 3.17 videos, once I have my settings dialed in again, I haven't had much play time in 3.17 yet. The 3.17 patch suggested that we delete our user folder, I backed up my mappings for the joysticks, but I still have to reset all my reverse axis settings for my Virpil. I have been doing that bit by bit as I have been playing around with a complex setup, AND my Z extension came in for my throttle stick so I just got that setup and have been trying it out. I will be posting some tutorial videos and will be doing it with the Thrustmaster and Logitech. Thanks again for the question and your support.

I am confused by all the duplicate setting. If you are using the hat for strafing, cycling targets, power, mining... don't you end up jigging to the left and right as you are doing all this?

You asked good questions. My main goal in configs is to build mental modes. I try to refine the control per situation. When in mining mode target selection is not used, however in combat mode. I prefer to use the hat only for fine movements, but in combat it adds a bonus of evasive flying. However, I think your question was, feel free to correct me, when I combine targeting and strafe and selection, does it jiggle my movement? If, Yes that would be the case and is intentional, and that is to add a little bit of evasive maneuvers while targeting. As you move and change your direction, the enemy's PIP computer Point of Impact Projection, gets jiggled too. My thinking was that since i'm not actively firing when changing targets it doesn't hurt. To use overlapping controls to maximize button usage. Did I answer you question?

I use the Warthog but am really not happy with the reverse to zero to forward of the game. Better to use just zero to 100% and a button to reverse... like Elite Dangerous. More resolution due to longer travel in each direction and much easier to come to a full stop since most gaming throttles don't use a center detent.

There is an option to do just what you like 0-100 and a button for reverse. I recently set this up with my new virpil control setup. I aim to play with that on the other sticks.

Hi James, thanks for your comment. I found the mistake in my file system and then recreated all the downloads. There is also a blank template setup for quick resets.

I couldn't get the Extreme3DPro to work for me. Waaaaay too senstive plus the throttle forward/back (stick forward/back) was inverted and nothing I did would change it.

you can do a simple mod for tighten the feeling on the spring. Just put a plastic round spacer of 1mm between the spring and the white plastic base, and put some grease on it, plus you can put more grease on the rubber on the base of the stick, all the parts where the stick has contact with this. The movement will feel more fluent, and the spring more stiff.

I have been having a LOT of buggy issues too. Thankfully this last mini update made a really big difference. If you make it back in the game You might find it fun. I am making a new video to show the inverse setting issues you had. I have been experiencing them on every joystick I have been testing and got really quick at fixing it.

Yes I will. 317 had a bug that reset my user folder. Building a new computer and will be doing a tutorial if install from scratch for each stick. Also I am creating a page on my main website I will link to and drop configs for each stick and a combo setup. Should have most of that done by the end of this coming weekend.

I tried to Logitech 3d pro and it didnt work for me, maybe it was broken. Thrustmaster 16000m was a good entry but after a while the lack of precision started to bother me. I just bought an upgrade 😃

@@SurvivorToHerooh, interesting! It’s too late for me now, though! I got Virpil Joysticks with Z Extension for the left stick. That setup is perfect. It is expensive but it’s a single time purchase and lasts forever even with heavy use. I heared VKB is a good middle ground between price and accuracy.

i used the Extreme 3D Pro as left stick for half a year. Did his job until i upgraded to VKB EVO Omni. It was surprisingly good as a left side stick. My Extreme 3D Pro was 15 years old and quite worn-out.

@@SurvivorToHero a little fun fact in addition. You can see the Extreme 3D Pro very often in scientific places when a joystick is needed. I saw many documentations about deep sea drones or other fields of science and everytime they use the 3D Pro from Logitech.

I have been having some issues with clearing. What I had to do was to manually go down the list. I am working on figuring out what exactly is the right order to clear it...but it seems to leave some residual binds. Perhaps I should include and empty joystick config to download.

Vkb gladiator nxt evos. Cheaper and better quality than x52 as well as far more durable than both as well as more versatile

Elephant man, I want you to know that I actually picked up some Gladiator Evo's and have been playing with them a lot to prep for the next video. I have some harsh criticism for the x52's too. However, the logitech hers is the most budget option and I highly recommend it to players who want to try sticks with minimal investment. Again thanks for your comments on the VKB they it motivated me to give them a try. I can't wait to finish those videos.

I GOT EXTREME 3D SINCE I JUST STARTED WITH WAR THUNDER 8MONTHS ON AND OFF AFTER GETTING MY JOYSTICK I GAVE UP AFTER 1 MONTH OF TRYING ETC ETC .....WENT BCK PLAYING WITH KEYBOARD N MOUSE BUT TY SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO WITH SPECIFIC BRKDWN MUCH APPRECIATED BRUH GOOD LOOKING OUT ....HEHE BY ANY CASE DO YOU KNOW HOW TO SET UP QUEST 2 FOR WAR THUNDER HEHE

I like that term. The thrust meter is actually the a bar that shows up to the left of Velocity Meter (I frequently SCM out of a bad habit).

You don’t want to use the logitech extreme 3-D pro for star citizen. It tends to drift a bit. I’m not saying it’s not a good joystick which it is it’s amazing I fly in DCS world using nothing but the 3-D pro. But I think for star citizen is not adequate.

Love this feed back, I am going to test it out again. I had some issues when I was testing but I forget, how I addressed it. I do recall slightly increasing the deadzone did make my logitech behave a bit better. However I was just using it for yaw and pitch vs throttle movements. If you used it for both games then that rules out my calibration question. What is the full name of DCS? I forget.

the lowest budget stick for SC is the vkb nxt anything less is a literal waste of money, as it will shit out in a few months

I have mixed feelings about that comment, but I do want to address the merit of your comment (a bit harsh but VKB's are good). The VKB NXT is/are amazing stick (s) they are well built and have some great button layouts. Especially the Premium ones (EVO?) VKB and VIRPIL: I went with Virpils instead which are similar but have different control setups that fit me much better. Sticks are really a personal preference...but EXPENSIVE for most of us just getting into sims. Thus... I stand by my Logitech and Thurstmaster recommendations for the budget sticks. While they are a lighter plastic build quality may not survive many years of hard play / daily flight abuse...with care they can last years and the cost of buying 4 over time is still a fraction of what the VKB and virpils cost. If it is a big issue in the US at best buy you might get the protection package and just keep using it over and over and over should it fail. Bottom line advice from me spend within your limits.... If money is no object Go for the VKB or Virpil. These are great sticks that will last a long time...but they are a LOT of money. However, For the best SC play experience: Upgrade your RAM, CPU, and maybe graphics card before buying really expensive sticks.

thrustmasters? yes, and the first that dies its the twist. Logitech? defiently no, its a die hard joystick, I could bet all in that a vkb magnetic sensor will will become faulty, before the logitech cease to perform.
