Bill had graduated from high school just about 7 months earlier. He had just turned 19 years old less than a month before this show.
Yes, you can see through his head on this video so you don't have to waste comments on that. This was recorded 40 years ago on VHS tape so there has been some deterioration over all these years.
Just look beyond that and enjoy this great opportunity to see a young Bill in one of his earliest recorded performances.

I think he started s ealing out of the house &;doing stand up at age 16 or maybe before, so he'd been doing this for 3 years or more already. Times were different in those days, and clubs didn't check ages in a lot of areas of the country.

Will Carroll - incredibly sharp at 19. I can't even remember what idiocy I was involved in when I was that age. Practically incapable of stringing together a coherent thought.

My favorite comedian! He had his style of delivery already developed in this video at 18(?). Pure genius! He was a natural and his style was basically just being his natural self and building on what came naturally to him. RIP Bill.

By this time he had been doing stand up for about 5 years already. Sneaking out of the house. It shows. So relaxed and engaging with the audience. He talked with the audience even in his later years.

Incredibly mature at 19. This is a real treasure. Bill and Carlin are my all time favorites. As a southerner, Bill had particular insights that really resonate with me. He’s a brother I would have loved to hang out with.

So this is 1980 or '81, and he is 19, and his stuff is more cerebral than anyone who was working at the time except Carlin or Pryor. His delivery is sharp because he had been doing this for a few years, but the material itself is ahead of his years, and the material he developed along the way still resonates today.

Better comedy set than most seasoned pros. The audience isn’t just laughing - they adore him. This is the first time I ever saw hecklers contribute something positive to the performance. He’s already on top of his game here.
@sparky6086
@sparky6086 4 года назад
Bill Hicks could read the audience well. I saw a video of a corporate gig, which he did for a bunch of business stiffs in Texas, and he mainly did Texas/Oklahoma jokes, because he knew in that setting, that the audience would feel too restricted to allow themselves to laugh at anything too edgy (Of course nowadays, everything is "too edgy" for the wider audience). In his early days, comedy specials weren't so common, as they would soon become on cable TV, so a good stand up comic, would play to the audience in front of him, rather than the wider TV, video, and later RU-vid audience.

Discovered Bill from a BBC documentary about him and Kurt Cobain. It happened to be on a used ipod I got at a pawn shop back in 2011. Ment to be. He will always be my all time favorite "comedian" though he was much more. Gone way to soon. Just like he said in the famous "it's just a ride" bit. "Shut him up, look at my furrows of worry, my big back account and family. This has to be real" Had he been allowed to live there's no doubt the greater impact he would have had on the world. Even still he has had an impact and will live on forever! R.I.Paridise brother Bill.

This is what thousands of hours of practise looks like. Jazz musicians, magicians and stand up comics (among others, these are my faves) commit rediculous amounts of time to make their art come off as natural as if one was born with it. I love Bill for his attention to the smallest details - this set is fantastic!
