On a winter morning in Hokkaido, various small birds came to the bird feeder hung in a garden. First came a Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker, Japan's smallest woodpecker, then a Marsh Tit, and when these two flew away, a Long-tailed Tit flew to the bird feeder. And then a Japanese Tit came too.
北海道の冬の朝、庭に吊るした小鳥の餌籠に様々な小鳥がやってきました。初めは日本最小のキツツキであるコゲラ、次にハシブトガラがやってきて、この2羽が飛び去ると、シマエナガが餌籠に飛んできました。そして、シジュウカラもやってきました。
Because the birds move extremely fast, the video was shot at 120 frames/second and played back at 30 frames/second, making it 4x slower motion. Furthermore, I set the shutter speed to 1/3200th of a second so that we can clearly see the movement of the wings, so if you pause the video, you can see the bird's movements and expressions at that moment, just like watching a still image, which is interesting. In particular, I tried to make the scene a Long-tailed Tit flying and watching my camera like the one used for the thumbnail, in 15x slow motion. It has a cute expression that I don't often see in nature.
小鳥の動きは極めて速いので、動画は120フレーム／秒で撮影して30フレーム／秒で再生することにより、4倍スローモーションの動画にしました。更に羽の動きがよくわかるようにシャッタースピードは1/3200秒に設定しましたので、動画を一時停止すると、その時々の小鳥の動きや表情が静止画を見るようにわかるので面白いですよ。特に、サムネイルに使用した一枚のようにシマエナガがカメラ目線で飛んでいる場面は15倍スローモーションにしてみました。普段のシマエナガではなかなか見ることができないキョトンとした表情が可愛らしいですね。
When I look at the little birds that appear in this video, I feel like I can kind of understand their personalities. Perhaps the Marsh Tit is shy and a bit timid, but the Japanese Tit is even acting aggressive and trying to scare it away. Compared to that, the Long-tailed Tit is calm and has not succumbed to the threat of the Japanese Tit.
この動画に登場する小鳥たちを見ていると、なんとなく小鳥たちの性格もわかるような気がします。ハシブトガラは遠慮がちで少し気が弱いのでしょうか、シジュウカラが強気に振る舞ってハシブトガラを追い払おうとさえしています。それに比べると、シマエナガは落ち着いており、シジュウカラの脅しにもあまり負けていません。
However, when the overwhelmingly large White-backed Woodpecker arrives, the small birds are forced to flee all at once. At the end, I also admire the scene in which a Long-tailed Tit, which was noticed too late, flies away from the bird feeder in a hurry.
もっとも、体が圧倒的に大きなオオアカゲラがやってくると、小鳥たちは一斉に逃げざるを得ません。最後に、気付くのが遅れた一羽のシマエナガが餌籠から慌てて逃げ出すシーンもご愛敬です。
The White-backed Woodpecker is a beautiful woodpecker, and males and females can be easily distinguished by the color of the top of their heads. Males have red heads, and females have black heads. The one that flew in at the end of the video was a female White-backed Woodpecker.
オオアカゲラは綺麗なキツツキで、頭頂の色によって雌雄を容易に見分けることができます。頭頂が赤いのはオス、頭頂が黒いのがメスです。動画の最後に飛来したのはメスのオオアカゲラですね。
