Bouncing from project to project as time permits. There are many things to accomplish in the short Alaskan summers before winter sets in once again. Send me rain, I need it. Too dry up here.

Great video! I was thinking, that stove pipe is going to make a mess in that beautiful cabin and then you caught it all with the plastic bag! Very clever!! I live in NE Georgia and I never tire of the mountains. I can't even imagine the joy of seeing those mountains every day. Just stunning. I must confess, seeing those big bears on the trail camera gives me pause!! LOL I am glad you are wearing your pistol and have your gun on the front of your quad.

I see your video and click on it because despite living in Alaska and having a breathtaking view myself, your view cannot be beat and you show it so well, but I was pleased to learn a whole lot in addition. In our BK, I can't even get that ash door up top to open for some reason so I need to start there, then I'm going to pull the catalytic like you did and make sure it's good. We're heating with a heat pump now fortunately, but in the winter I'm sure we'll light old trusty up again and there are so many house fires.... Thanks as usual for sharing!
@MountainMariner

That ash door/plug should come out easily. Maybe it’s been deformed by crazy high heat? Wonder what the problem is? Let me know what you find out. Thanks for watching!

@MountainMariner
@MountainMariner 10 дней назад
If you are getting a telescopic double wall like I have you will need a thermometer with a probe into the inner pipe. A magnetic type will give you false readings by hundreds of degrees. You also have to drill a “slot” into the inner pipe because of expansion under heat. Just drill both regularly first but then pull the pipes apart and slot the inner drill hole. 18” up from the stovetop is what they say…

For your wood handles try one part linseed oil, one part mineral spirits, one part pine tar. Pine tar is found at feed stores in the equine section. It's used for the maintenance of hooves. Use a little heat to get the mixture to soak in. Suggest two applications.

Ed, good day to you from Washington. I want to thank you for sharing Alaska from your mountain top home with all of us. You live in a beautiful location! The Fern Trail sure does fill quickly. It's quite beautiful to see it. Though I bet you are on full alert driving through there. I'm always impressed with how well you tend to your cabin. It's truly a labor of love. I'm pleased to see how you protect your hands while cutting the fire bricks to size. Is your goal to have your new buildings up this year? Life will be a bit easier when they are. Enough rambling today, so I'll close out for now. Have a fantastic day, living your best life in the beautiful Talkeetna Mountains.

Ed the real facility manager! the 22er Kal is sweet. I had a Walther 22 kal. Its the Mossad gun for the fley-police patroll. It has not the same power then the 9 mm in an airplaine..22er: 2 in the breast one bullet in the head. Soft and easy. I like the automatic but revolver is better in cold countrys The 360th view makes you a space invader like from a film out of the 80th. Star invaders or so. LUKE in Alaska

I have a soap stone wood stove with a catalytic combustor in it. It worked fine but would only last a saason. It would burn out. I quit replacing it after the 3rd time. They were very spendy. The stove still puts out plenty of heat with out using it! I burn a lot of hickory so maybe thats the reason they didnt last as hickory burns very hot compaired to most hard woods? Another great video!

Hey Ed, just a thought, have you ever considered getting one of those mini skid steers? The China ones are inexpensive and light enough to be flown in. Would be good for these projects and trail maintenance. That 360 camera is weird on a TV. Thanks for sharing.

Exactly how I sweep my chimney! When I had my Blaze King I brushed the front of the cat about every other week to keep it from plugging. What kind of flue temps are you seeing for a low slow burn? I’m surprised those bricks wore down so fast.
@MountainMariner
@MountainMariner 13 дней назад
I have to turn down my setting to 1. Otherwise my cabin gets too hot. Usually 300-400 flue temp at 18” up from the stove. But I make sure to burn very hot for at least an hour each day.
@wobdeehomestead1464
@wobdeehomestead1464 13 дней назад
Yeah I think you mentioned the stove was too big for your cabin. I know Blaze king has a smaller model you may want to look into in the future. Those long burns are nice when you don’t want to babysit the stove all day.
