A little KR. Bailed out of California in January, the place has gone insane. Retired early to Nebraska, found Mikey Pipes because I didn't know anything about boilers, water softeners and RO systems. I do now! Thanks Pipes!!

A thought. Use a temporary power cord to test each circulator motor seperately first before removing the circulator control. Doing this you'll isolate the parts to find where the problem is, be it with the circulators or circulator control. Noisy circulator bearings, impeller problem, shorts in the motor or wiring will be revealed. Isolate and divide up the components to find the problem to conquer it.

It depends if the capicator is charge. Take capicator out of the circuit to read the motor windings.

Hello Mikey.. I have a situation that room temperature rises above the thermostat setting. For example, it's 75 (and rising) while the thermostat setting is 70. I found that the Taco SR501 red indicator light (call for heat) is always on, with or without the thermostat connected to the system. So I think the problem is not the thermostat but rather the Taco SR501 switch relay. To control temperature, I have to manually switch off the power to the heating system. What could cause the red indicator light on all the time? How do I know for sure that the Taco SR501 relay is the problem? Thanks for your insights.

I’m trying to figure out the reason for the hot plate heat exchanger. Is there glycol in that zone or what? Maybe that zone is used to melt snow on the sidewalk? And while you’re talking finance with the customer you should have Peter pipe those relief valves to the floor

Mike , it would’ve been Interesting to see how many amps the bad motor was drawing ?? Being that you work with the 007 all the time it would be good to know what a good amp draw is I guess you could test a few of them When there are new and when they have been in service…

the max allowable current draw is on the rating plate and in manuals/documentation. the actual current draw varies with feet of head (flow resistance), it should never be above the rating on the tag/manual, per circulator.

Should there be a strainer on the entering side of each side of the plate type heat exchanger.

yes, but those clog very fast in such service. it shouldn't pull off the very bottom of boiler, it should come from an elevated tapping below operating water level and above the bottom, then return into the very bottom or close. most have specific tapping's just for feeding heating loops, usually listed and labeled for domestic hot water indirect tanks.

a good inspector would catch the lack of relief valve on the hydronic loop. but most of them would be too busy flagging and writhing over multiple other issues to even notice.

Probably not a bad idea to change the control relay just to eliminate a potential problem later on down the road.

At least an hour. If it's not a full hour, just bullshit until it gets there. That way you don't charge the customer for an extra hour and it only being 20 minutes in.

Just a reminder current=voltage/resistance. If the motor resistance is 200+ ohms it draws less current than at 160 ohms.

that's an AC motor though, so throw out much of what you know for DC circuits, because impedance and other factors throw a huge monkey wrench in there, far more math and data needed 😵

My question, and sorry if poorly worded, is ----why is this heat exchanger here, what purpose is it used for this home? Is its use here typical of what's done with other home HVAC systems in your area? Thanks.

@@snidelywhiplash8923separates system glycol in the heat loops from boiler primary loop, if there was a rupture on the radiator the boiler doesn't go down

@@MrDmadness In the first 60 seconds of the video, MP says points to a pump on the heat exchanger and says it's circulating water to the basement zone. Why would a house occupied presumably 12 months of the year need to have glycol circulating in some radiant zones?

@@snidelywhiplash8923 because proper glycol levels will not allow the zone to freeze in the case its not used and it gets cold, it's very common in high mass and baseboard heating applications. Glycol also prevents internal corrosion as its an oil so not oxidizing due to the water. The caveat is that it can jelly up if left un circulating too long
