Get a pack of the multiple colored small zip ties. Come in very handy for situations like this. Tag the low and high voltage wires with the same color for each zone before you tear it apart.

For you and I replacing a transformer makes sense, but if you're working for someone else charging a good book for your time, replacing the whole zone valve controller is the way to go. Then if anything else like a relay goes bad its the manufacturer's liability not yours as the repair technician.
