BMW 530d e60 air filter replacement

Good question. When I bought my car there was a KN filter fitted by the previous owner. I subsequently removed that and went back to standard filters. I did keep using the clip (which I presume was part of the KN filter fittment) because I thought I may as well ensure a tight fit. I find those filters fiddly to fit so I kept using the clip to make sure it was tight and remained in place while I put all the plastic housing back on around it. In theory it should sit tight without the clip tho once the housing is back on (no room for it to move). To answer your question I dont think its standard to have that clip but I'm not 100% sure on that. Never hurt me having it tho over about 6 years (just don't over tighten it).

That's correct, the standard Filter has no jubilee clip. There is nowhere for it to move to once it's all put back together. But as the author of the vid mentioned, it just keeps it in place when putting it all back together as its a fiddly job. A lot of work to change an air filter..but you shouldn't have to change it again for a while.

Sorry for the late reply. You could try that but I think it's very unlikely you could get the new filter in unless it's all out of the way (although someone may well correct me on this). Even with everything out of the way I always find it fiddly enough to put in the new filter. Nothing is ever easy with BMW's!

@@bumbleshufflesdiy5908 Thats ok , no problem. I did it the other day, followed your vid completely. All went fine. Like a lot on this car, there are some bad design faults which i don't expect of BMW i.e i have the estate version - routing the wiring and rear washer tube inside the tailgate hinges has caused the notorious loom breaking , bottom pulley went on both my 5s, rear light wiring failing, cup holders breaking etc. Anyway all done - thanks for the help of your video

@@1970sthrowback You need hands the size of a Capuchin monkey to reach the rear fixings. It takes longer to remove the rear parts around the pollen filter but it works better in the long run

@@bumbleshufflesdiy5908I was getting through it all nicely but then hit a problem when I got to changing 1 of the brake hoses the nut holding it on had been rounded off so I ended up having to grind it off as it was not moving for anything lol. Obviously I had to cut the copper brake line so I ended up bending and clipping a new line in from the centre of the car but apart from that the whole service part was fine just takes time taking all the engine covers off to do air filter and undertrays to get to the fuel filter took me 5 hours but that was the brake hose slowing me haha.

Worth bearing in mind for people watching your channel if you have a 2006 like mine onwards bmw 5 series M57N2 the crankase breather has no cotton filter inside or vortex breather inside I found this out when I got mine open at the rear of the air filter.Bmw did away with them on the later models due to breather issues affecting turbos.So basically mine has the cap on but nothing inside I still changed the cap thou and rubber gaskets just so it's fresh.

Oh that's right I leant that too when doing the breather on mine. My e60 was 2003 model m57tu I think and it starred life with a cotton one possibly but during subsequent changes ended up with a vortex type. I definitely put in a vortex at one stage if memory serves my correctly.

Glad it all went well albeit plenty of work. Think of the cash you saved on paying someone else for all of that.

Fitted it took just over 2 hours to do first time having to find the right tools etc in the dark. Started 10pm finished just after 12am. Will test drive it tomorrow all filters were really badly sooted up like yours.

@@thecarguychannel great work glad you got sorted. It's a real pain of a job on those cars having to remove so much plastic to get at it and then from memory it's not the easiest to build back up again either. Saved yourself a few quid doing it yourself and that's the best bit !!
