It was nice to see a genuine companionship and care between the characters since we rarely ever see that on the show. I fucking love stewy he ended up being one of my favorites at the end. I can't wait to rewatch it with everything we know
They are billionaires but they lack of morality, maturity and also teamworks. Even with how much money do they have, they don't have criteria to be CEO because they are still kids playing outside their dad's office. Without their daddy, they become nothing.
@@Saigeee333 And then, they're gonna pay their consequences for how it feels choosing a fascist president, competing for a position that their dad promised to, getting left behind by everyone in the company and one more thing, how none of them can carry their dad's legacy and becoming nothing in society.
I couldn't have been happier seeing all the Roys lose. Roman was humiliated by getting his picture taken when signing over the company to GOJO, Kendall lost the company which is the only thing he ever really wanted, and Shiv had to give Tom power after treating him like a lap dog for their entire relationship in order to win him back. Perfection.
I think shiv voted for the deal only because she couldn't bear Kendall, which has nothing to do with her trying to win back Tom. Now with Tom as CEO, and Shiv has nothing but mony, the dynamic in their relationship will change dramatically and I don't think they can last
@@brianfitzsimmons6074 I actually think that now their relationship has an actual chance. It's too long to explain right now but a RU-vid channel called Just an Observation did a perfect breakdown on Shiv. Basically, Shiv's whole life she trusted no one and had to fight for power/attention being the youngest and a girl, her father set that precedent. Especially with how Logan would lie to her and string her along, she basically thought every man was the same and always felt she could never fully trust someone and kept her options open. Notice how she left every relationship she had ever been in before they had a chance to break her heart. She basically never trusted Tom to not eventually be like Logan, even though Tom showed that he was actually a simple man. Whenever Tom tried to tell her that he wasn't a "disgusting brother" like Greg, she never believed him cause she couldn't fathom it. Greg was the only one fucking around, Tom showed throughout the show that even with the power/freedom of being single, he doesn't know what to do with it. He even told Mattson, dude I'm simple and will just do whatever is needed of me. He honestly just wants a wife who will be loyal and loving, and NOW Shiv sort of has no choice but to be that. And I think she'll be happier because now this will be the first time that she has no other options and has to put her eggs in one basket (Tom) and I think over time she'll finally see that Tom has always been different.
Kendall can always start another company but the tragedy is that company will never be as big as his father's company. You can practically hear the sorrow in his voice when he says he's the eldest son.
No he can’t. The point is that they are completely incompetent children who have not and will not build anything of their own. They feel entitled to inherit a role that none of them are qualified to do.
It’s not even about the company being as big as his dad’s. It’s about what Waystar represented in terms of his father’s legacy. It’s that moment where Kendall felt like he was finally getting a chance to take the reins and make his father proud (dead or alive) but that legacy was stripped away from him last second. It was the final piece of his father left, and it will never belong to him. Arguably you could say Kendall never got to properly mourn his father’s passing until he lost on Waystar. The grief and dread washed over him in that very final scene. Even in death, Logan will forever remain an elusive figure throughout the lives of his children, especially Kendall.
She actually wasn’t lmao, it was 5-5 when she left and then it was 6-6 when she came back. The 2 people to Frank’s left voted, they just didn’t show it
@@Jeremy-ed7fy I didn't realize that until now after re watching the scene. Did her hesitation lead to one more no-vote or was that calculated in their internal numbers already?
So unreal!! So fake!! Succession end was so disappointing. 😂😂😂😂😂😂 so unreal, constructed, very far from reality! Tom ceo, 😂😂😂😂 Shiv who betrays family.. 😂😂😂😂😂 Succession= 🤡
Some people are saying this didn't make sense, but of course it did. What was the last thing Logan said to them? "You are not serious people". Everytime these three made a decision in this show it was to spite their father or siblings. They are blinded by this bitterness in a way that seriously interferes with business the entire series. Of course it would blow up like this, they fucking hate each other.
i noticed shivs decision only comes after Roman’s delayed response followed by kens “that’s fuckin right.” like it was just that one flash of ego needed to convince her this wasn’t the right thing to do. i know a lot of viewers criticized this for being unrealistic but i honestly see how it makes perfect sense for her character to do this.
I thought that Shiv had made up her mind to vote YES when she entered the room. Roman's hesitation, imo, just allowed her to leave the room so that she could collect her thoughts on how she going to present her YES vote. Kendall made for a spectacle when he followed her and gave her no thinking space/time. Shiv got her back up when Kendall mentioned Tom. I also thought any opinions of Tom were strictly hers to have (he was her property), which she had Logan protect him from jail and Gerri make sure that he didn't go. Also, her marriage to him made sure that he moved through the company ranks. My last point, Tom was not stupid. He knew his wife better than she knew herself. Logan kept Tom on because he was loyal and he knew what he was doing within the company and Logan believed that truly loved "Pinky" (Shiv).
@@jr3624 That, too! These characters seemed to have had very little time for the right thing to do. I know what the writer Jesse Armstrong said, but his actors, imo, seemed to have some leeway, which he and the directors gave them to branch out. At another website, a writer alluded that Shiv arrived at board meeting texting with someone, that it could have been Tom and this would make sense after she gave it some thought. Tom probably told her that she would get nothing from Kendall and Roman. I think that Tom also may have had a conversation with Karolina, too, which would explain she and Shiv's odd conversation before Shiv went into her meeting with Kendal, Roman and Hugo. When Stewy arrived and Kendall offered him a fake position before even working out things with she and Roman, it might have sealed it for her. She was to get nothing. Everyone says that Shiv did not vote her own best interest, but financially and probably, emotionally she did. She got a windfall from Matsson and so did her brothers; she might have earned her husband, as he immediately asked for Karolina when he arrived (she was with Shiv); and an attempt for a family, something that she wanted and probably thought that she would never get. Shiv gave Tom things that they agreed upon in season 1: a CEO title; a baby; somewhat easing his mind about money (no longer Roy money); continued access to nice things; for Shiv, in addition to Matsson's money, a baby; possibly a stable home (as I think that Tom still loves her). He wasted no time in getting her out of the bldg and away from Matsson.
I have a lot of respect here for Ewan voting for his principles (knowing the merger and Matsson would be so damaging to the world) in spite of his disdain for what Kendall had become.
@@an-qo6by I found it very interesting how Ewan would speak about how horrible his brother's empire was. However, he would be at every board meeting and he obviously kept his shares in the company. He was so against everything that was happening but he benefited from it just like everyone else
@@emmanueloppong9778 I do have mixed feelings on Ewan for the reasons you state, but I was glad he stuck to his guns here, even though he would have made more money if he'd voted for the deal to go through.
The great irony is that if Kendall appealed to his siblings as Kendall, and given a heartfelt, and honest explanation about how he felt over the waiter dying, it may have changed Shiv's mind. But by then he had sat in Logan's seat, and he acted how he felt Logan would have acted. No holds barred lying, and wrath.
No nothing he could say would change Shiv's mind. Her ego could not stomach the fact that her brother would win the crown over her. She also had already found a better option for her, which was to let Gojo acquire Waystar and let Tom be installed as CEO. Perhaps in her mind, she'd have a better chance at acquiring power being the wife of the CEO than she would get with Ken as CEO. That she could continue playing the game that she thinks she's so smart at. And it's probably the right move for her. Ken doesn't really care about Roman and Shiv's role in the company as long as he wins. He's probably going to cut them out of the company if they stood in his way.
@@jonjones8827 If she was determined to screw it over from the very start of the meeting she would have directly said "Yes". She didn't, she was anxious and she was nervous and didn't know what to do. That's why she left the room, she was visibly distraught because she knew it was up to her to make the final call and she didn't know what to do with it. She didn't do it to hurt Kendall, for me when they all have that conversation she really wants him to give her a reason not to vote YES. But he doesn't, he becomes a demonized child. Worse than his father because at least Logan was smart.
His entire last minute pitch to sway Shiv in that room was ALL ABOUT HIM. Not once did he say this is good for the company. Even when he said "it's good for us" he prefaced it by saying "it's good for me". If he didn't reveal his desperation for getting his greed fulfilled he could have swayed her.
Frank was going to vote yes but he still insisted that Kendal present the alternative infront of the board, only if he had actually taken it seriously and not be a cocky snob thinking he’s got the vote locked up. His claim to the position because he had it promised by someone else is what always stabs him in the back. As Logan said, not a killer.
Kendall asked the board to "do it for his Dad." The majority of the board did ---- they sold the company as Logan wished. The kids were "not serious people."
@@annkey4091 Logan knew that Gojo was a massive overpay... If he only knew what Gojo was paying for them after his death.. He would be rolling in his grave knowing KEndall was trying to kill that shit.
Also, Kendall is not exactly telling everyone on the board of why they shouldn't vote for Gojo Deal. That's not even a pitch, in summary he said: "Look, Gojo deal is bad, okay? The company is ours, my dad build it from Day One so I as his eldest son who has been working for so long deserved to be CEO. Fuck Gojo, just say No and make me the CEO." Also, he poured the water to himself and to Ewan, whom he thinks is better than his Dad eventhough he's just the investor of the company and also as bad as the rest of the Roys as he's a hypocrite. He's just there to honor his late brother eventhough they had a rough relatinoship. Not even to Frank who is the senior employee, or Stewie, his on and off best friend or even his younger siblings. When Kendall is too overconfident, he prioritizes himself over everything and treat everyone like trash. Also, noticed every time Kendall is wearing a white shirt with blazer with no tie, something bad is always happen?
Frank and Carl have wanted this since Logan died. You could hear their contentment when they learnt Mattson wants to fire them after taking over. They got happy endings.
My god the last 15 mins were so painful to watch. I get that all the characters are evil and selfish, but it was hard seeing Kendall take the L yet again, over and over
Shiv may have actred erratic, but she managed to pull out from Kendall a reaction that shows why he is just as unfit as all of them. Roman put it in simple nice words "We are shit." If his siblings can so easily push his buttons so that he lashes out in such a childich and also brutish manner..., under what little pressure will he snap in the future? Kendall even has shown he will walk over corpses. Who knows what atrocities he would have committed...
@@BritneyLaZongaHis sister backstabbed at the last second after pleading fidelity and having that sibling bonding last night, even if it meant the Husband she hates and Matsson who backstabbed her win. Of course he’s going to act emotionally, what the fuck do you expect him to do.
@@TheSunderingSea Sorry but that is not a reasonable reaction. He literally assaulted Roman twice. And grabbed Shiv who is pregnant. He was becoming unhinged and acting like a petulant child. Even though Shiv couldn’t stomach him being CEO out of jealousy, he didn’t make his case any better by being a brute.
Kendall should have shown the respect his family and peers at the board were due by giving them a serious pitch of his vision and hope for the company. Even if it did not gain a single vote - he owed them that. Legally and ethically, the board has to serve the best interests of the shareholders, and unless independence under Kendall is going to drastically improve value - they would be right to sell.
Also, noticed how he only poured the water to Ewan and also to *himself* ? Not even his siblings, his best friend, Stewie or even Frank who has been working at the company for so long. Also, he didn't tell the reason why they shouldn't agree to GoJo deal and even said "Bullshit" in board meeting.
@@tiaaaron3278 Kendall's entire storyline: -Being arrogant spoiled rich kid -Always thinking he's on top of the world -Yapping a lot thinking he's Eminem -Bullying Shiv with Roman, his #1 yes man -Once he fails, he's always lash out like a child -Repeat
Had Kendall talked himself out of it had he explained how it haunted him and how it always will and to take that moment of vulnerability he shared that day and made it to be his defining characteristic and weapon to take him down as a underhand move it would have moved them enough But when he outright lied out of desperation it was clear he would repeat that offense with waystar and what removed him from the board and us as an audience
Shiv couldn’t care less about the dead kid or how Kendall acted then. She just used it as a weapon to justify her action. She couldn’t stand letting him win. She was a bitch from the start. She never ever wavered even a little from her selfish nature. Her mom would be proud.
Kendall's biggest mistake is not being able to get Frank onboard with his plan to block the deal. He was able to get his vote before to oust Logan. He just couldnt do it again when it mattered the most.
Frank had an obligation to represent the shareholders as chairman. Turning down Matsson's offer would open him up to legal issues. That and Frank and Karl were both looking forward to their golden parachutes and wanted out.
Also, the old guards (Frank, Karl and Gerri) have agreed with Gojo deal since Season 3 finale as they were in meeting together with Logan at that time. Mattson also immediately called Frank after learning from Tom. Everyone on the company agreed with Gojo deal, it's just the siblings who are in denial and too childish towards Logan and Mattson. They want the CEO title like they want their favorite toy or things that they like but none of them have responsibility to have it. I bet if one of them gets it, they will get bored immediately and not taking the job seriously like their dad used to.
The siblings are incapable of supporting one another’s success and that is due to Logan’s parenting. They love each other, but they had to endlessly compete against one another not only for the top job, but for their father’s approval and respect.
Also, Logan made a mistake to promise them the CEO position of each of them. Therefore, all of his kids are acting so pretentious just because they think, "Because Daddy told me to!" And they have worst attitudes, rude, disrepectful and act too cocky. Not only just Logan's parenting, their mother, Caroline is also a bad mom. She's ignoring her children's existency because she doesn't know how to be a good mother and also having a husband who is a workaholic. Even when Logan took their custody, he still didn't know how to be a good father. Connor in the other hand knows that he is not good enough to be the CEO. He's trying to make the name of himself and not being in the company since Day One. You are also noticed that Connor always treat Willa with respect eventhough Willa only loves him for his money and wealth while the other three treat their partner like crap? Because the other three learned it from their parents while Connor whose mother has been thrown in asylum and being ignored the whole time realized that he has to fix himself to be better person while the other 3 are so delusionals, corrupted and also loves themselves more than everyone. Also, whenever you see Logan and Connor are interacting, it likes a genuine father and son bonding and Logan mostly smiles listening to Connor's story because he feels warm and relax. Meanwhile, for the other 3 kids is about business, resentments, arguments.
This scene made me sick to my stomach because I realized that for four seasons there were no heroes in this story. Everyone was a villain and showed their flaws in the end.
Shiv did what she did for selfish/spiteful reasons… but she’s also right that Kendall is awful and probably would be a bad CEO. Both of those things can be true.
Kens addiction is his biggest shortcoming and the reason Logan did not entrust him his company. Other than that he is pretty good in that position also taking into consideration the fact that it was him vs the world throughout the series.
Shiv was very confident to vote at first and also want to take down the 2 men who betrayed her, Tom and Mattson. But, as soon as Kendall had an audicity to sit at Logan's chair, put his foot on his desk and annointed Stewie as his Chairman, she was on her dilemma. She also noticed Roman was bleeding and she knew it must be Kendall's work. Let's not forget that Roman and Shiv are annointing Kendall as the next CEO with not much 100% confidence and support, they just like "Uh, fuck it. Let's just pick him as the CEO because he's our big brother and also he wants it so bad since he was a kid." Just like how Willa accepted Connor's request to marry her by saying "Fuck it!" (It could be the foreshadowing for the moment) Also, Kendall once again ignored Shiv on his pitch, he just said "Me and Rome" but not her. So, Shiv decided to change her mind and sided with Tom and Mattson in the end which for the first time ever we see him finally take the risk instead of playing safe every time.
he was arrogant in most of the business situations, which led him to overlook important details and conversations so he would for sure not be a great ceo 😂
My one critique here is that Kendall never really explains WHY the GoJo deal is bad. It's a fantastic deal for the shareholders, given how much more Mattson is offering than the initial deal. Frank is right: the board has a fiduciary responsibility. It's not that far from the Elon Musk/Twitter thing.
Yeah for sure, it's the sort of thing Kendall really should have stressed one last time just-in-case instead of just doing his weird big-dog act.@@deluxebigmac
Remember Kendall just wants to tank it because AVN was being bought, Kendall was never shown to be able to be Logan at every turn he spends too much and bails on deals. Kendall was never gonna win
Shiv chose Tom over Kendall because she couldn’t stand seeing Kendall win over herself. It makes sense, and this is amazing writing from the writers. You can tell Shiv was never okay with Kendall winning over her. It's childish, and that has always been the dynamic between them. 10/10 ending.
I mean I can kinda see that but i think it’s more the fact that kendall was just becoming Logan. I think she did it to “avoid the poison dripping through” like kendall himself said. This whole season hes been acting more and more like his father.
You know the more I think about it the more sense it makes to me, why she did it. Maybe she also felt like after all the shit she did to Tom this would be a way to say sorry, to give him the upper hand for the first time in their relationship and making sure he would stay with her for the sake of her kid.
@@pmb2054 lol I think they showed you during the election episode that shiv is not concerned with the greater good unless it aligns with her benefit. She had no altruistic motivation
My interpretation of shiv's fate its that she found a sustitute abusive father figure on Tom. Tom had a development in the series that make him resent shiv and be more cold with her, and when Tom betrays her to be Matsson CEO, she instead of taking revenge, tries to appease him like she would have made with her father.
Dr Ramani made a good assesment of Shiv...how she preferred to be in proximity to power rather than without power (which was the option Kendall gave her) She had options...siding with the father of her child or her brothers who always cast her aside🙆🏻♀️ Her child will always be her leverage against Tom
I agree 100%. I've seen a lot of people saying that Shiv flipped at the last minute just to spite Ken, but I think her conversation on the phone with Tom was the key to her hesitancy. Shiv is terrified of being left alone, her father is gone, her mother is emotionally unavailable, Mattson has betrayed her, her brothers have already tried to cut her out of the business once this season (and Kendall's behavior certainly pointed towards icing her out again), and if she voted the deal down, she loses Tom forever too. Shiv is terrified of the prospect of having to open herself up to another person (again) and having it go wrong - so she picks the 'devil she knows' in Tom.
Frankly, I think Shiv, more or less, unwittingly promoted Tom for the CEO position. She did not understand that Waystar RoyCo was going to acquired by GoJo. When Matsson asked Shiv about Tom, for the most part, her critique of him was fine, but when she got derogatory about Tom, I think that Matsson knew he had his man. As he said, he did not want Shiv's input. He needed someone to implement his changes for the company without pushback or what they thought. She told Matsson at the funeral that Tom was basically minding the store.
I feel like Tom was on the receiving end of the abuse at least through much of the series. At some point he realized this and decided to cut ties. Shiv was pretty nasty to Tom through most of the series.
Shiv is mostly tired to be the Token Girl as her father always left her behind for work, her mother doesn't know parenting, her brothers always bully her and leave her behind. This makes her always being outcast and wants to fight back most of the time. I think the reason why she is so talkative because she used to not always get a chance to speak since she was a kid. When she meets Tom, she feels superior because she finally meets a man whom she can treat like a slave or a dog. She is so petty, childish and spoiled and always want to treat like a Princess. But, Tom is getting more aggresive as he's tired how Shiv is always treat him badly and she never support him and always gaslight and criticize him. When she learns he is the CEO, she is torn apart whether she wants to get downgrade to be CEO's wife forever or having a childish and unhinged big brother to be CEO. She chose the first and decided to take a risk. She mostly likes to play safe and won't break a sweat but in this case, she's finally has enough and tell Kendall, "I'm done for being Token Girl. I'm your sister, not a girl who's always need to left behind."
0:09 Nobody on Frank’s right 0:20 Suddenly two women on Frank’s right 1:10 There’s also an old man on Simon’s left 1:50 Neither the women nor the old man are there anymore 1:58 Suddenly all the seats are filled again
I think most if not all of people's theories about why Shiv voted the way she did have merit, but somehow no one is addressing the one that is explicitly stated: that she simply doesn't believe Kendall can be a good CEO. It isn't that Kendall is completely incompetent, and honestly I don't even think it's about him being a "killer" (figuratively speaking) or not. The reality is that all of his business interactions feel as though he's playing pretend. He behaves the way he believes Logan would, bull-dozing every instance as if believing you'll succeed is really all it takes to do so. And when that doesn't work, he demeans, he pleads, he guilt trips. And all of it is DESPERATE. There's no calculation, no precision. It is all frantic and typically only moves him further away from what he wants. He attempts to emulate Logan, not realizing that Logan likely already had a fair amount of business savvy and power by the time that Kendall was born. When you have that much know-how, you bulldoze when you know you're able to. But there were other times when Logan chose to be more congenial, more down-to-earth, more patient. He calculates, knowing that not every strategy will work in every scenario. And like, there of course were times when he's lost his shit or made a misstep, business-wise, but he for sure is never begging or bending over for a deal. Kendall can act the part of a killer, someone who's ruthless and machiavellian, but at the end of the day, he still pleads. Just in this scene alone, this all is very clear. Instead of making any actual case for why they should vote no to the GOJO deal, he steamrolls the process, already assuming he's won. And then, after this, when trying to convince Shiv to vote for him, there's no real rebuttal to her statement of "I don't think you'd be good at it." In that moment, he could've argued that point. Wouldn't that be the logical thing to do? While there most definitely was at least one other reason in Shiv's mind of why she'd vote Yes, this is the only reason Kendall is made aware of, and it's possible that if he could give her reason to believe he'd be a good CEO, then she would vote No like he wants. But instead of doing that, he just loses his shit completely. Thereby proving more and more that he would not be a good CEO, because he crumbles under pressure and all of his strategy for dealing with conflict is to essentially flail and throw a tantrum. Putting every other reason Shiv likely had in changing her mind aside, this one is pretty valid, is it not?
I agree. Nicely stated. EDIT UPDATE: When this tape first begins, 0:00 look at Shiv's eyes when she walks into the room and watches Kendall. She was next to the last one to enter the room. Also, look at how Roman is sitting. I believe then that Shiv knew was going to vote YES, but was not sure how she going to present it. When Roman hesitated the way that he did, if things about Kendall were running through Shiv's mind, Roman's hesitation allowed her recalibrate any potential just vote Kendall the reigns of power position. It was matter of how she was going to present that YES vote.
Also when Shiv mentions the waiter, the fact that Ken dismissed it and said it's nothing to consider when in reality it was a true moment of vulnerability that he was willing to pretend didnt happen just to benefit his current situation was like a nail in the coffin imo. By that point Shiv knew Ken would do or say anything just to get what HE thought he deserved as his inheritance and as a leader it means that he would never be true to his word and would only think about himself and not the company
I think kendall's reaction is totally justified. it's a miracle he was even able to think and speak in that moment. shiv literally destroyed him. she killed him. and nothing he could have said would change her final decision. the whole point of the finale is that the kids haven't changed. shiv was always jealous of kendall.
Shiv going against Kendall made sense. She and Roman weren't that happy with him winning because they knew he wasn't fit for it. This was a typical Shiv move, but man was it brutal to see Kendall lose it.
Shiv never agree to let Kendall win since Season One. She's always being petty, jealous and also victimized herself pretty much. Also, she treats Tom as her lapdog only for Tom to fight back many times. She has no choice to be Tom's prisoner forever rather than let Kendall win.
I get the impression that Shiv noticed Roman's wound and that's when she started questioning her decision. She was scared of what this might do to Kendall.
I agree! It cut directly from that scene between Kendall and Roman to Shiv looking SUPER upset storming into the meeting, totally different from how she had been behaving in the previous scene. It feels like the obvious explanation, it was baffling to me to come online and see that so many people had missed this.
Also, Shiv went from being confident to kill the Gojo deal just to make sure Tom won't be the CEO to get more and more confused to her big brother's behaviour. From Kendall's sitting in their dad's chair and then put his foot on Logan's desk. Also, noticed how Shiv who's usually talkative even in serious meeting, is quiet, listening and also look so not confident like she used to. She's in her dilemma like she's finally growing her concious. She didn't even talk back to everyone, she's just leaving the room on confusion.
S1-E2 Shiv -> Ken : YOU LACK KILLER INSTINCT, YOU'RE WET, YOU'RE GREEN, YOU'RE INTELLECTUALLY INSECURE, YOU'RE NOT EMOTIONALLY STRONG ENOUGH, YOU HAVE ADDICTION ISSUES, I DON'T THINK ALL THAT, I'M JUST TRYING TO BE DAD'S VOICE.
Knowing Shiv is gonna vote against her, makes her facial cues so powerful on rewatch. Just her seeing Kendall flounder up there like the fish out of water he is, knowing the best option for her is always going to be Tom.
Kendall made the ultimate mistake trusting Shiv when she had been moving against him the entire season. She's just as deeply selfish as himself, they really are siblings. He should've put more effort into trying to get Frank, his pseudo father figure, on his side instead.
Only Roman will acknowledge the peace of being free of Waystar-Royco. I’m sure he was relieved to finally be out from under Logan’s shadow and could build his own legacy, or do whatever he wanted without abuse and ridicule. He really was the most tragic character in all of this.
I think that Shiv will also acknowledge that she is free from backstabbing of her brothers and the manipulation of her Dad. She can begin a new life with a husband that I believe still wants her; a baby that both now want; possibly some help from the folks (his) in MN; and doing what she pleases with the money that she got from Matsson.
Kendall didn't even pour the water to his siblings, his frenemy, Stewie, or even Frank who is the senior employee. He's doing that to get Ewan's attention even though Ewan didn't work at the company only being the investor.
Shiv is by far my favorite character in the show. When you see her in the first seasons you can think is the outsider of the family, she has a job outside of the company and seems to have her own personal ambitions out her father commands but step by step you can see she can be treacherous and overall she can’t stand one of her brothers can be “better” than her, so at the end makes huge mistakes only for personal reasons.
my read is that Shiv is upset after seeing that Kendall opened Roman's stitches, that was the final straw for her. It's the only thing that explains her sudden change in body language and behavior between scenes. Kendall was becoming too much like Logan for comfort. His aggressive behavior had been building the past two episodes, he had rubbed salt in Roman's wound and driven him to self harm without ever apologizing or demonstrating concern, it culminated in the previous scene, and now finally the show (and Shiv) punishes him for it. Of course Shiv had other baggage and resentments going on, but it's baffling to me that people seem to think that pettiness and jealousy was her sole motivation here. This is a show that loves punishing people for their mistakes, and this is Kendall getting punished one last time.
Shiv was going to vote YES when she walked into the boardroom for the meeting. You could see it in her eyes. Roman's hesitation at his NO vote allowed her to leave the room and take stock on how she was going to present her vote.
She’s a bigger POS than Kendall? Kendall talked about fucking over his siblings all season to Frank and Hugo, while acting like the three of them were a team to their face. At the end of the day, none of them deserved the crown!
@@tomstreet2859 just cause roman said that, those not mean he should be physically aggressive in front of the other employees, he undermine his own career, would be a confident employee after seeing your boss being aggressive towards his own family? Even if Roman deserve it he is the one who is supposed to be better, therefore be the CEO, but he spit on himself
@@laum5371 His career and life is over...Kendall is going to kill himself because of what Shiv did. He doesn't care about his career or the rest of the board. And yeah Roman did deserve that beating.
Everyone likes to pretend Kendall isn’t clearly more competent than his siblings for a smoothbrain “they’re all equally shit!!!! Interpretation. However Matsson is still more competent then Kendall and will likely make Waystar less of the bloated mess it became under Logan.
When you say saved the company, do you mean the deal that Kendall made with Stewy and Sandy for help with the $3 billion in debt? Sandy was Logan's nemesis and I do not think that Logan forgave Kendall for adding them both to the board. I do not think that Logan was happy with Shiv for expanding the board and placing herself and Sandy's daughter Sandi on the board either.
I think this is the first time we see Shiv grows her concious and questioning her morality, usually whenever something is not on her way, she will talk too much to get what she wants but she always loses anyway. But, in this case, she's quiet, she listens to the vote and she's also rethinking whether or not Kendall should be the CEO. Also, when her last vote goes to her, she decided to have a room to think. Because she learns 2 ugly truth: Whether she has to let her arrogant and childish older brother who is a drug addict and can't take criticism as the CEO or her husband whom she used as her spacegoat to be the CEO who already be chosen by Mattson. For the first time ever in her life, she took a big risk and sacrifice.
I can't remember, even though I just re-watched seasons 1 and 2: Who sabotaged Shiv's presentation before the employees with the loud music? Any assistance jogging my memory would be appreciated. I thought that it was Kendall.
No, she isn’t. The most interesting characters have always been Logan and Kendall. Their dynamic is the show. That’s like saying Claire Underwood was more interesting than Frank in House of Cards.
@@DontTakeThisSeriously616 that's why I hate this episode and I also loved this episode. The important plot point schemes they are hatching of the season only get a mention or dosent happen at all which made it all irrelevant but the payoff for all the Roys bs was due in here
Frank got much richer...his vote was logical. In real life a vote at that stock price would have been overwhelming not needing to come down to that one vote...the money was too much.
Jesse definitely didn’t close this loop well because we didn’t know for sure that Frank wasn’t with Ken until finale. Frank and Ken were always pretty close and had each other. That said, it seems that Frank didn’t actively screw Ken over. He just voted against him. I thought his behavior with Roman at the funeral was because he was with Ken to go in as king the way Hugo was with Ken. Guess that Golden Parachute was too good to pass up.
I believe it would have hurt Kendall a bit less if Shiv hadn't promised to vote with him just a night before.. He came in thinking he would win this but as usual Shiv proved to unreliable and impulsively handed it over to Tom and Mattson
Shiv made the selfish move even though she knows it won’t make her happy. She’s gonna be in a row of ex-wives one day like the ladies at Logan’s funeral. She blew it.
Tom isn't really the CEO...just a puppet to Matsson. He offered that job to him because he knew Tom had no backbone and would be unconditional🙆🏻♀️ Shiv has Tom's child and is richer than him so she still has cards...and let's not forget Matsson admitted he feels attraction towards her💀 I dont think she will let go of power that easily She chose Tom because she knew she could manipulate him while Kendall was going to cast her aside
She would have lost under Kendal too , he wouldn't trust her again yo give her any important role in the company if he ran things. Basically all the kids screwed up and the dad was right all along
@@chipmunkpark8826 shiv can no longer manipluate tom business wise, tom is officially hip to all her bullshit, and she has zero power in gojo/waystar shes officically out the company, she chose tom becuase she wants her family together, if she voted kendall then tom breaks up with her and she slowly loses her money cuz kendall isnt shit as a ceo
No she wouldn’t have. She told you the reason why she did it: she can’t stomach Kendall. Tom being CEO does nothing for her but make her the wife of the CEO
@@rhondac.891 With the money Shiv is getting from the sale, I would vote Yes to Santa Claus. Tom can do whatever he wants with the money Matsson is going to pay him. Since Kendall was making plans to cut/gut she and Roman, her Yes vote was harmless to her in the end. The boys and Logan had already kicked her self-esteem years ago. The Yes vote was years of pent up anger.
I wonder on a personal level what the relationship between the siblings would be like after this - i mean would they be totally estranged ? How could it not be totally broken after having been so close in Barbados. That’s perhaps the biggest tradegy
i think they end up fine, the business world is what kept them at odds and there dad pitting them against eachother as well, now they are all officically pushed out the business and can start healing which will likely bring them together eventually
The fact he said "that's fucking right" after Roman said no is probably what really turned off Shiv. If he wasn't so arrogant, and wasn't so sure of himself, then she may have taken his side. Putting his feet up on the desk, not even bothering creating a presentation, showed that he didn't take the CEO role seriously. He expected it since birth and never really had the stomach for the job or the work involved. Shiv saw through the blinding confidence of his persona and saw that he was never a good candidate. Had he shown humility, had he shown respect for the title, had he even prepared a little bit more for his pitch, perhaps Shiv would have seen him as someone who could do the job. Kendall squandered that the moment he started acting cocky. Shiv couldn't stomach the look Kendall had when he won, so she decided to stop the deal. Seeing Kendall, the screw up with addiction issues, win the seat and not even take it seriously, was enough to fully make her decide to vote against Kendall
No, he feels entitled to the job because he's worked for it his entire life. IDK where you got the notion that Kendall never worked for it or had the stomach for it. His hubris forms from the fact that Logan has been telling him his whole life that he deserves it, and he's gone through so much for it.
@@therealkendallroy Just because he has gone through so much does not mean he will be a good CEO. He is unstable, unpredictable, prone to indulgence, and has had many bouts of addiction issues. I don't think those are good qualities to have in a CEO. He is not reliable, that is his biggest flaw. He never did any of the actual "work" that one must do. He always was off partying, getting high, pretending to be some big businessman when he couldn't even secure Vaulter. He is a phony. People like Karl, Gerri, and Tom Womsbgans actually worked hard. They were in the office every day. Kendall hardly worked, at all.
People are missing one of the main reasons Shiv went against and that is Tom. With him becoming ceo , she thought voting it through meant there was a chance he would take her back as she knew she was completely lonely and had no one. The phone call when he said he wasn’t sure about them was crucial and this was her way to bring him back . That how pathetic she is that despite not loving Tom she needs him for security because she has nothing
Romans moment of pause gives Shiv enough time to breath in the moment and change her mind. If Roman was faster with his yes Kendall would win through momentum but Roman kills the yes momentum dead.
As much as i wanted Kendall, i guess im happier that Logan is the one who really wins. He wanted the deal to happen and even after death, in a way he beats kendall for a third time.
Would Shiv have changed her vote if Frank went the other direction around the table? Holding the deciding vote might have been just enough of what she needed.
@@dignam8943 the trust was different and was set by Logan in the pilot in the first place, not that it would matter since Marcia hated the siblings guts in the first place
@@inigobantok1579 It's also entirely possible that Logan changed the terms of the agreement since they're marriage existed pretty much just for the optics since S3.
maybe none of this would have happened or maybe they wouldn't changed their mind and even though she said YES but not as the last vote still it would ended up the same , she didn't know the other's votes so that was a very risky move .
HOPEFUL INTERPRETATION OF THE ENDING: Whatever is thrown at Kendall. Even if he cannot take it, he does take it and that just kills every weak part of him. The more he is burned, the hardened he becomes. So whatever happens. He took the sharpest stab to the back, he got cut deep and he's dead internally. Kenny is no longer human anymore. The minute hint of mercy that he had for his siblings are also gone. So he's fully free in a sense. He lost all the parts of him that makes him a good person but now what he has left in him has made him a beast. He is emotionally nuked, fatally cut and shaken when the show ends. But I think that Kenny is gonna be back. He always bounces back. That is his only consistent character trait. In a way he always keeps coming back to land a few more punches even if it is apparent that he'll lose the fight. And this time, Kendall is a killer. He's even more hardened. He is ready to haul on his gear, get on the field and go to war again. Maybe he will enjoy it. Because its become a game for him. He can't die. He can only lose. And he has lost a lot. The odds are in his favour now. Furthermore, KENDALL IS FREE. From Waystar, from the kingdom of his father. With new money from the sale and his killer instincts, coupled with his new age knowledge of the new world and amazing crisis management skills, I think Kendall being banished from his father's kingdom will force him to start his own empire. By the time he is of Logan's age, Kendall might have his own new Waystar. It will be tragic, but Kendall will get what he wants. Where the show ended is not tragic, here Kendall is actually free from the fight and a new sun is shining on him, a glimmer of hope for a new life. The ending shows us mercy by not showing us what Kendall will eventually do; start his own empire, end up like logan, stack up billions but lose all blood-bonds. At the end, Kendall will die alone. Now that is tragic
I think she gets votes on the (Family?) Trust, which is different from the Board of Directors. Idk how all that wealth management works, but from an outside-the-show perspective, I think the actress for Marcia was busy with other shows so that's why her role is diminised in later seasons.
You could’ve skipped from episode 1 of the series to the end and it wouldn’t have made much difference, there was ultimately no point to Kendall Roy as a character. The series is just him being beaten and humiliated and backstabbed the same ways always. Most of the episode is just him being humiliated, even to the point where the writers revert him back to season 1 Ken so he can lose. Personally I feel like it was a waste of time. All that growth was for naught, he never had an actual plan or any moves or ever had some killer ruthless move planned for his siblings, no tragic Pyrrhic victory, the parallels between him and Logan were just a tease.
But isn't this more intriguing? Almost every show follows a format of character development till victory. Kendall's flipping back and forth never really being able to break out of this cycle is more akin to real life. They aren't serious people.
@@sycamore2656 im really tired of the real life argument, so i guess people don't change no matter how much they endure so theres no point, once an unserious person always, no hope, just 39 episodes of watching a dog beaten by the same people the same way, i didn't want a happy ending but i also didn't want an ending that makes me think "what's the point" what an anti-cathartic and pessimistic outlook on life and it's suffering, Also not a fan of subversion for the sake of being more interesting
