There is a piece missing from the chainset on the drive side and I don't believe they even checked the bike over, otherwise they would have seen that issue quite easily.
I did it was like a knocking feeling on my feet it gradually got worse I’d arrived at work and checked it over to find this was how it is . I did tighten it up but they need to be torqued Halfrauds replaced the Bottom bracket .

I’ve had for a year or more now, had new chain ring, new cassette , new chain , new brake pads. I’m not a extreme cyclists I have covered around 5-6000 miles, I have to say I like it, changes gear pretty snappy , for level of fitness I can get up to a decent speed , it’s been a decent bike , the only gripe I might have is the standard tyres are no Fan of Wet man hole covers . 🙀
If halfrauds were any good, they'd have gone around and torqued everything up correctly when you took it back to em. How long would this have taken? not much time. This does happen on any mass produced bike from time to time, doesn't matter the cost, a bolt is a bolt, a screw is a screw.... A good shop would have given it the once over and understood and accepted your concerns rather than give you the usual delboy response.
Totally p1ssed off! I need to buy a bike during this lockdown and this (amongst other vids) has totally put me off the Boardman range! I was looking at the URB 8.9 with Alfine hub. Now WTF do I look at? Or is the URB 8.9 still worth a look at from another retailer? Thanks in advance.
Your asking me 👀 I haven’t a clue I based my bike knowledge on if it’s more expensive than the one next to it there must be a good reason . Bought it from halfrauds on 12month plan about 80/90 quid month . The rear bearings in the hub have gone kaput and it constantly rubs the disc in the caliper no matter what I do . Soon as lockdown ends I think I’ll buy another bike too thinking specialized Sirius Ellite or expert . This boardman is a pile of 💩. You only have to touch the frame and the paint chips off . It’s only upside is tat 10kg is light for the money it costs
@@mark-1rc502 I got an URB 8.9 3 months ago. It is a lovely looking machine. I'm having problems with the chain continually coming off, which is a nightmare since you have to take the rear wheel off to get the chain back on. After many times back and forth to Halfords, I took it to my local bike shop. They looked at it for 5 seconds and told me that the chain is far too long. Turns out that the chain was never fitted correctly when I got the bike. I would also agree with you about the paint - I have never seen anything with such weak paint. All the paint came off mine at the bottom of the front forks where the wheel comes off with the quick release mechanism. If you lean it up against something metal with any degree of force, the paint will be off.
Paul Hamilton yeah sadly your right I meant mine against a Metal gate at work while I zipped up my back the front wheel turned and the bike began to fall I caught it but man has it made a Nasty mess of the frame . , my Front Calipers get stuck on the rear doesn’t release properly , the Bike shop said these Particular sram brakes are💩. I didn’t believe him but thinking about my 15 year old claud butler with shimano have been through Some right messy muddy tracks I’ve simply washed the bike and never given a Problem. I even stuffed new pads in , the only plus point is the Frame is ReallyLigjt and to buy a Light as this bike again will cost a lot more money .
So i did same mistake, Parts fitted to this model doesnt fit right. After a month fighting with "mechanics"(i have better knowledge after googling whats wrong) i finally return bike. Then i bought Merida Speeder limited ed from Tredz 950£. Love it so much and Tredz people are awesome, you can feel its a different league from halfords. Hope i helped. Enjoy ride!
@@kalownik85 I'm having a nightmare with this bike. Chain keeps coming off. Halfords have 'fixed' many times but it still falls off. Now hub is wrecked and I'm awaiting a replacement. How did you negotiate a refund? I get a different person every time I queue up...
No it isn’t “Rocket Science” and this isn’t my First bike either , but it is the first a crank has Came loose. Do you drive a new car out of the showroom and have to start fiddling around ? Would you even fix it yourself No!!! You take ur new car straight back the dealer! Why should my New Bicycle be any different ...
@@mark-1rc502 come on, I have the very same bike, came with 3 years Halford care pack, though I did all the service and maintenance myself, it is part of the fun. bicycle is a mechanical tool and it is a fairly simple one. you are an English man, you can do better than that.
max factor Yeahh i Tightened it up with an Allen wrench for my Journey home that day, but took at back to Halfrauds they Torqued it , also get them put new pedals as One was Knocking when I stood up. I fitted new brake pad recently but I lost all the Fluid in my rear . The Chain worn , Cassete worn, chain ring So/So I’m having it mended by a Local Bike Shop, Halfrauds are comedians .
Did you ever get this problem sorted by Boardman / Halfords? I have seen a few people online comment that they had bottom brackets break on fairly new Boardman bikes from Halfords. They have put their prices up recently and, between problems like yours and the new higher prices, I don't think that they are a good deal anymore. Would you buy one again?
This was very Off putting , they took it Inside to fix I wanted a whole new bike but they wouldn’t have it, they said they tightened it up with the correct torque. However since then I’ve not Had this problem again ., I also got them to put new pedals on. One was looser than the other. It’s coming up for a Year in a couple of months, the gears still fire nicely , the chain has never came off the ring . I will say the Wheels need truing often or they rub the Disc Brake, The Schwalbe marathon runner tyres don’t like wet manhole covers. Would I buy another ? May be not , Not for a £1000 . I’d rather put a little more in for a Known brand .
Thanks @@mark-1rc502 - I appreciate your thoughts. I was looking at the Hybrid 8.6 for £600 - £480 with a current deal they have on offer. But I am inclined to go with Giant, Orbea or Marin instead I think, even if it costs more. Too many nagging doubts about build quality with the Boardmans.
J C Yes sadly I’d be inclined to agree 😪 I was attracted by the 12 months 0% plan. However there’s nothing stopping me loading my credit card just I never then back . 😆 I was contemplating a new bike or doing a few improvements , new tyres and better wheels , I can do a bit of speed on this though , it’s difficult to get a bike under 10kg for my price point .
What I tend to do is keep an eye on the bike etailers for 3 or 4 bikes that I like and then aim to buy when they are changing the year models. If you do that you can get bikes 30 or 40 percent off. But you have to wait and then be willing to buy instantly when you see a bargain. @@mark-1rc502

cumbriancamper Yeah they Torqued it up, I had a bit of a knock in one of the pedals so they put on some new pedals too, i have just replaced the chain, chain ring, and cassette and new brake pads F&R. Cost a small fortune but 🙄 at least it’s working lovely . It’s actually not a bad bike , quite smooth and light for a hybrid. The rider could be fitter though 😝
Thx , yes I still have it and Agree to replace this bike will cost me . Big bucks. I am happy with it, I have had it repaired new Chain Cassette , and chain ring all original parts from independent shop , I love it , it’s the best bike I have ever had .;)
Yeah, i recently brought a boardman mht 8.8. Cycle republic built it and it was shockingly bad how they built it. As I test rode it at home after collecting it, i realised the chain is off one of the cogs, immediately took it back, same problem the next day. Ended up forking out £60 to get it tuned at my local shop. Dont trust halfords or cycle republic.
Cycle republic built mine too it was ordered via Halfrauds website, halfrauds ain’t got a clue either, i get mine checked over by have bike, seems to be running ok. The first time havebike looked at it was a pop up stand in a park& a young Girl checked it over said it’s in a bit of a mess, it needed new bearings in the rear hub, brake pads were finished, and chain was Half worm. Because it was a girl I dismissed it Until I had some problems with my back brake and a wheel that wobbled, They fixed it for me, its going good now. On this occasion the young girl knew more than I did ☺️
@@mark-1rc502 Yeah, they're truly crap. I dont know how cycle republic have a god rep to be honest. Like, if they really did test it, they would've know that the chain is off the cog (obviously). Was all a bit ridiculous, but now its running great. Goes to show anything tied with halfrauds is to be avoided completely.
I haven't had a Boardman bike as i tend to ride Cube but my son had a similar issue with a bike from Halfords. I wouldn't personally buy another bike from them as they haven't got a chuffin' clue what they are doing and since acquiring Boardman cycles have sent the quality on a downward spiral.
Frank The Tank I went against my first thought , my parents bought me a Peugeot racer way back ☺️, But I’d had a bad experience of that , I was standing up pedalling the chain jumped off the ring , bottom line I fractured my Skull. Since then I’d never have a bicycle out of Halfords , but I’m an impulse buyer I liked the Boardman so I bought it on the Never Never , What I’d replace it with in future I don’t know ? But your right their mechanics are Useless
Reading on a couple of cycling pages this week that this problem is quite widespread, two people have said that they had near fatal experiences with this failure....quite worrying really and sad at the same time as Boardman was once the brand to be seen riding.

Well luckily I noticed it Before something serious happened , Riding in the Road at 20mph+ in the city of London you need two things , your wits about you., and confidence in your bicycle . Funny enough as I type I haven’t checked the bike over for a while , I think I will give it a once over. I liked it because it was light weight , it doesn’t look flash , and I thought it’d be a speedy bike .
David Morgan I have no clue as to what you mean ?😐 It’s a HYB 8.9 I bought from Halfords , I haven’t changed nothing it’s a Sram 1x11 gears , Sram brakes ? I don’t know mate ? That’s the bike sold to me as a 8.9

Damn dude. Hope its just a loose crank bolt and not the bearings in the bearing bracket. Not that it's a hard job. Just frustrating and infuriating. If you can work on rc cars bicycles are piss haha. ***edit*** just realised its a 3 year old video 🤦♂️. RU-vids algorithm is out of whack haha.
No worries man🤩 RU-vid works in mysterious ways . I tok it back to halfrauds , wanted a new bike altogether but they weren’t having it . They Re Torqued it , it’s been ok since, one of the pedals I could feel a knock when I stood which didn’t inspire confidence , they put mew pedals on it . On it’s second chainring , chain and Cassette. I would of liked a mew one but there’s a major shortage of bikes right now, and plus 10kg frame don’t come cheap in other brands .

RobM Yes I had one to fit I tightened it up to stop the wobbling but I did t want to over tighten it Either , It came loose again so they did fix it I wanted I new one but they wouldn’t budge. They took it out back and fixed it new pedals too
They put new brakes on my bike, which lasted no time and created a strange noise. I have zero trust in there so-called bike mechainics. As for ebikes, my carerra crossfuse is still going strong after 2 years and thousands of miles
It is a Boardman with SRAM, started off with a knocking sound, then the crank had a quarter inch of play side to side. It was repaired by Halfords, but not what you would expect from a new bike. Bike cost me £750, maybe i should have gone for a second hand specialized with higher grade equipment..
george ahmet Yes that what was going on with mine the crank would knock every time I stood up and gave it some . I also could feel a Little play in one of the pedals you could actually feel it under your foot when your pressing on, so they slapped on some new pedals Then I spoke to their CS for a couple of Quid Compo , So far It’s been alright , They said it wasn’t torqued when it left the factory , like this bike retails for £1000 , I got it because I ordered one onLine , I waited ages for it , they rang to say they don’t have the bike I ordered £750 , so they offered me this for the Same price .
Would have been alright if I had a torque wrench and knew how much to set it at. Which even so is besides the point the bike was not very old , I’d already been back to tell them it doesn’t feel right , they dismissed it as nothing , when clearly that’s something . They can have it back and fix it Regardless
RossCo___ It seems their Build is hit or Miss , A bit of a Lottery you might get a Good one, or you might get a Shit one . Bring your crystal ball when buying a Boardman bike . Take it back to where you bought it Man., Obviously I could of tightened the crank my self but it needed to be set to the right torque .
mtb Prestatyn Rogers I think I’d have to agree with you .! They fixed it but it Squeaks on the right for every over the top , Shame it’s actually a Nice bike .
adam Tribe Yes they tried to get me to buy a Maintenance plan, I thought , You’ll be Lucky . I’ll try Evans or Cycle surgery in future, It seems Good bike mechanics are few and far between , I tried two local bike shops with my Older bikes they can’t even fix them right .
