A good samaritan lends Gyp Rosetti his 3-in-1 oil, and Rosetti thanks him by explaining the other things 3-in-1 oil could have been. Season 3, episode 1. Belongs to HBO. I own nothing.
Gyp was an asshole prick who got what he deserved. No magnanimity or humility whatsoever. He deserved no quarter or mercy, and ultimately got none in kind.
You should use this statement to follow any explanation of a precaution. "This is why I always look both ways before crossing the street. I don't want a knife in my back while I'm urinating on the beach." "This is why I always wash my hands after handling raw chicken. I don't want a knife in my back while I'm urinating on the beach."
@@SergeantExtreme Yes, he already slighted him, and this crossed the line into disrespect. No Sicilian crime boss of the time would tolerate that, and its just for him the bar is very very low.
He was stabbed the same place as Jesus on the crusaphix and the blood ran down like that too. Not sure the meaning but there was the scene where Gyp is praying in the cathedral and then starts chewing out God. Gyp is stabbed in the back then stabbed in the front. Could be symbolic as well.
I love how an episode or so later, he refers to this incident as "I had to put up with car trouble". Man, Bobby Cannavale did such a fantastic job here. Glad he got an Emmy for his performance.
"Regina" comment is what did it. Thinking he had to explain Regina means "queen" to a guy who just told him he's from Sicily, is basically telling him he doesn't understand his own language
I agree I think the old man had a shot a living when he said I didn’t mean anything by it and he should’ve said what else to a bunch of guys who obviously are not guys who work at Ford company but when he said relax and put your leg He was gonna walk out of there alive but the Regina comment was just fucking stupid good night Irene
Love the expressions on the two dudes' faces as they glance at each other at 0:54. They know exactly what's coming as soon as the "oil, what else?" comment.
+Shaneel Nand no, that was the moment he STARTED to fuck up, the last drop in the fuck up glass, was when he telled gyp "regina means queen" (he allready know that very well, his italian)
I agree with Battlefield. I think that the excuse he asked saying that he "didn't mean nothing by it" get him off the hook. But then he pulled the Regina explanation.
This scene and the Vito car crash scene from the sopranos illustrate why you have to be very mindful of your attitude when your alone with strangers. You never know what kind of psychos are out there.
Back in those day, nothing was really set up for organized crime. It wasn't mafia as we know it, more street gang who get united by tradition. So if Gyp knows how to keep his street and make money, nobody was going to kill him for being a hothead.
...because it was MASSERIA'S "crime-family" - i.e: it wasn't a "family" - it was just a bunch of backstabbing assholes, "united" by the FEAR OF GOD Masseria was able to put in men... the guy was a BUTCHER...and he LOVED OTHER BUTCHERS - I know Maranzano gets a lot of "bad wrap" nowadays, but if you watch back at the accounts of the time...then Masseria was the fucking "stalin" of their world...
This is a good distillation of Gyp’s flaw for the entire season done in one short scene. His insecurity, especially about his intelligence. His inability to separate emotion and behave rationally. Even when someone is trying to help him with no ulterior motive, because they aren’t completely deferential and they’re just the slightest bit condescending; he can’t stomach it. He can’t get out of his own way.
And the guy was being classic East Coast Nice. He'll complain and swear a blue streak while he fixes your flat tire. West Coast Nice is just the opposite. They will talk nice and pretty while not helping you at all.
I like how the happy music starts while he's beating him. "Looks like someone didn't switch to Geico. Don't let this happen to you. You can save hundreds on you're car insurance."
The guy who plays Rossetti played a porn producer in short promotional video made by Louis CK for his show Louie. So it makes it even funnier. If you haven't seen that clip check it out. It's a funny one.
I remembered this scene. I like it. It tells you everything you need to know about this character. Reminds me of No Country for Old Men with the store owner and Chigure. At least Chigure gave his would be victim a chance to play for his life.
Big difference Chigure acted like that because the guy noticed him and couldn't mind his own business. He was a psychopath but smart af This guy is an insecure moron. That's it
The funny thing is there is still a 70/30 chance that Gyp would have murdered the dude even if he had just answered “it’s a type of solvent that helps loosen rusty materials, I have it in my car” lol
No, he wouldn't have. He slighted him. This in his eyes and the eyes of his men make him feel dishonored, and that means someone has to die. To him its all very rational and correct.
Nah, I don't think so. It's the what else remark that flips him. Saying "oil, what else" is essentially saying "It's oil, you dumbass". If he'd just said it's an oil for loosing nuts, I don't think he'd have killed him besides honestly I think the clincher was him explaining what Regina means when Gyp has just told him he's Italian
Anthony Ramsey Is no one allowed to share wisdom any more? Or will they get persecuted for it? Man’s gotta point. You don’t turn your back on psychopaths like that.
@Willem DaFuckedUp lol fuck the eu its just a handful of rich countries and the rest are 3rd world countries. The way you praise the eu i can tell you are from one of the shitty countries that need everything handed to you
@Roger B Not for nothing. Our friend violated many unwritten rules. If you don't know your venue, don't stop. Those guys would not have remembered that old man five minutes later if he had not stopped.
All he had to be was polite. The "what else" snarky remark, followed by patronising him by telling him "Regina means queen" when Gyp is from Sicily, to not bothering to shake Gyp's hand. He basically dug his own grave, doing all that to a touchy psychopath.
@@arserobinson7118 What's more polite than helping strangers fix their car? As for being patronizing, how so? The guy almost certainly isn't Italian, probably doesn't speak Italian and only knows that his dog's name means Queen and he likes to share that information.
He was on thin ice after he said what else, he says her name is Regina, means queen, like Rosetti doesn’t know the latin for queen which is what Italian is based off of, after he said he grew up in Sicily. Then he doesn’t shake his hand. Bad moves bud.
Sadly I’ve known people like this. Maybe not quite to this extent but people whose egos are so fragile that they can take offense to the smallest most nothing things and blow it way out of proportion. I tend to keep my distance from them and with good reason.
I always wondered why they didn't let some of the air out of the tire to make it look flat at least. Were they trying to tell us that the mob was so dumb they'd see a perfectly fine tire and call it flat?
Some people get used to the way they talk to others because they rarely come into contact with someone who demands respect. It’s better to be polite, especially to strangers.
Not really, everybody has things they don't know, how is admitting you don't know something significant at all? I don't know how to play the saxophone. Wow, I'm so self aware and intelligent.
@@JamesBond-er1hk That's just Gyp Rosetti for you. One of the most sensitive characters to ever exist. Only he doesn't cry over it - he beats the everliving fuck out of you for it.
This is the exact moment I began hating him. With absolutely zero chill, beat an old man to death that had only stopped to help him out of the kindness of his heart, all because he had assumed that Gyp knew what 3-in-1 oil was.
People one here praising this character, were probably on another video talking about how "they hate bullies". The contradiction. If we like the bully, then he's cool. Point taken.
Seriously, how did NO ONE shoot this unstable, rabid, monster like his second week in the criminal underworld? This dude kills people for being in his general vicinity. Sooner than later, that catches up with you. Plot armor maybe, I don't know, but blind fear and intimidation only goes so far.
It was revenge for the snarky comment, and alot of other things, there was nothing we could do about it, regina was a queen and that guy wasn't, Whoops sorry wrong mob scene.
Poor old man. This scene always makes me cringe. He loses his life because he stopped to help people with car trouble. But it was a good way to introduce crazy ass Gyp in this first episode of the 3rd season.
