For this in depth video review, we hop in one of my favorite cars in recent memory- my friend Bongsu's insane BIG TURBO ecoboost Mustang! With the 4 banger Mustang getting some hate that's different from the V6 ecoboost in the Taurus SHO, it's interesting to see how a bigger turbo reacts to the otherwise stock engine. Depends on what you're soing with the vehicle. Drag cars for example more hp=lower et but cornering and daily driver torque is what will pull you out the corner so iagree in that sense

This comment belies a fundemntal misunderstanding of torque and power. Hp is a derivative of torque. It's basically torque times RPM with a denominators of 5252 so that it can be compared to a draft horse.. Tye formula for HP is torque x rpm/5252. You cannot have power without torque. If you have more torque than power it just means that your engine runs out of breath before it gets to 5252 rpm. If you've got more power than torque it just means that your car makes its torque past 5252 rpm. The question for a turbo charged car is one of lag. You can have instant power but you won't be able to make it high in the rev range. Or you can have more power but have it later.

6:09 for anyone wondering why the speedometer says “Ground Speed,” the Mustang is based off of the P-51 Mustang fighter plane from WWII. And the S550 adds to the plane feel with the toggle switches, too

I always wondered why the cheap, good handling, turbo, 4 cylinder mustang wasn't the new sweetheart of the tuner/drift seen? I mean it's like a heavy 240 SX basically! 2.0 liter turbo 4 cylinder rear wheel drive, sounds like a tuner car to me!

It’s a 2.3l but I totally agree. IMO it’s way better than the Japanese competitors. I’m a big muscle car guy but also into jdm stuff. At first I didn’t like this bc “a mustang needs a v8” but if you look at it from the perspective of a tuner/japaneseish car-it’s awesome

Fun fact the Ecoboost was based off a patent engine turbo engine mazda was working on when Ford still owned Mazda at the time.

@@razorblade1179considering how people drive these cars pushing the block to the limit or adding/removing parts and not tuning/using crap shelf tunes. Makes sense why they’re blowing up. The engine stock is already at its near limit pushing 20psi stock. 25psi is the limit before you def need a upgrade. I’d stay at 20psi on a good tune.

I have a 500 whp Mach 1 and I don't think it's fast. It's enough to fuck with most people on the street, that's all. 380 whp Ecoboost is weaksauce. Fast is when you get up into the 650-700+ whp range.

The size of the turbo is not always a direct correlation with the power numbers. The honda at your school could be running alot more PSI ( even though it's a smaller turbo) , the engine could have more compression etc.

Nice to see you finally review a big turbo Ecoboost! I don't know what's up with his gas mileage. I have a big turbo Ecoboost making the same amount of power (385whp) and I get 20mpg around town, 30 on the highway. And I drive the hell out of it.

Great Review! I love seeing you review Mustangs. I'm a Service Manager of a Ford dealership and have get to drive everything. I love the Ecoboost Mustangs. I've always had love for the 4cyl Mustangs. Are the monsters? No, they aren't meant to be. They ARE a fun car. With todays technology you can go as fast as your wallet will let you. It's all about the fun factor of these cars and they nail it.

The speedometer says "Ground Speed" because the mustang is rumored to be named after the P-51 Mustang plane. That's why the premium package has switches that look like they're from a plane.

Torque comes down to bore and stroke, Americans engines typically have a longer stroke than their Euro and Asian competitors

Or at least low-end torque does anyway, but that's not always true for all American engines. GM small-blocks are oversquare, yet they still make a ton of torque down low compared European and Japanese with similar displacement (not that there are many to compare to). The LT1 makes most of its torque below 2,000 RPM, which is pretty impressive. How can we can explain that?

I think it has more to do with the cylinder head. Higher air velocity at the ports gives you higher torque. ...But with many new cars the computer controls the fuel, spark, boost, throttle plate, and cam timing, so all the mechanical things that determine torque are overcome by software. This could mean that software is holding back the high RPM power, for the sake of a huge safety factor.

+devil037 Displacement often means more overall torque, but doesn't necessarily mean the torque gets distributed lower in the rev band. An LT1 has an oversquare engine and has relatively high rev range for an OHV engine, but it has a a very flat torque curve. That's some pretty impressive magic they they working with.

People hate on Ford for a i4 turbo mustang because they are narrow minded. It's not all about power all the time, why not balance and handling to? They don't realize Ford is aiming for the tuner/auto x guys and girls with it, this car is a perfect competitor for a BRZ, Genesis 2.0t, and Miata. I haven't auto x'd this car but I'm sure it does phenomenal.

That's exactly why Chevrolet decided to do a I4 Camaro too. If Ford and GM decided to introduce totally new separate models for that purpose, it would be more costly to develop and promote, could possibly compete with their own existing cars, and would have to go up against well-established nameplates in the market. Adding different engines to an already popular car allows them to experiment without a whole lot of risks.

Michael Leidy while yes i4's are all well and good there's a reason they don't tend to work in cars like that. Same with 3rd gen camaros like mine that's why they got rid of the little thing. It was already a proven and designed platform around a V8. They aren't marketing to autox people nor tuners. It's just a high mpg variant with a turbo that will get people to buy it at a lower price while maintaining a preferred vehicle. Not to mention these cars aren't sub 3000 lbs like my camaro they are 3500 or even more, you need torque and more boost to get that torque means eventually more money. Money that could make the coyote very powerful. Now if Ford made a good looking small car, something like the old rally capri's that'd be a different story.

Great video and I love that Mustang aside from pedestal mount spoiler which I just can't stand on any car. Note to they younger crowd: American cars had ass kicking turbo cars that were "ricing" up the streets in the 1980's long before the rice crowd were even born! In the mid 1980's Ford made a Turbo 2.3l 4cyl Mustang that was faster than the 302 V8 Mustang GT at that time. It was called the Mustang SVO! So it's no coincidence that Ford went with a 2.3l displacement for the eco boost and us older guys recognized this from the get go. GM also had the Buick Grand National in the mid 80's which destroyed Corvettes and Camaros of the same era. Most importantly was Chrysler corporation who basically invented the "ricer" minus the stupid wings. But wait it turns out Dodge invented the stupid "ricer' wing as well and it was all the way back in 1970 with their Daytona NASCAR. Yes the car that made Richard Petty famous and unbeatable until NASCAR banned them from the track because they rarely lost. Well back to my point. Dodge had many turbo cars in the 80's and it was the first company to have a turbo hatchback with serious power in it's most potent form it made 200+ lb/ft of torque. This hatchback was the Dodge Omni and they had a few Shelby version of these cars the GLH and the even faster GLSH, with a 2.2l turbo. Yes, I am talking about the same Carol Shelby as in the Cobra roadster and the original GT 350/500 cars. It was amazing these little boxy hatchbacks would smoke a Chevy Camaro or Ford Mustang with 5.0l V8's in them of the same model year. Later in the 1980's there we're the Shelby CSX which was a Dodge Shadow and then in the early 1990's there were the amazingly potent IROC Daytona and the Dodge Sprit R/T which both had a 220+ HP 4cyl. that could make much more many years before anyone knew what a WRX was. Just like the earlier versions did in the 1980's these Turbo 4cyl Dodges made horsepower like the Camaro or Mustang did, and due to their lightweight they were a good bit quicker.

I have an ecoboost myself and in the process of modding, and by far this is the most beautiful ecoboost I’ve ever seen and heard. I just wanted to know what the rest of the specs are. Not wanting to carbon copy this beautiful beast but wanting to have some similarities as far as exhaust and engine bay modifications

I work for ford and we did a 4cylinder eco boost. Only reflasjed the ECU and cold air intake with all ford parts and it put out about 475horsepower. The car was quick as hell. Don't knock it till you see for yourself!

1965 mustang? If ya I would recommend getting the 5.0 coyote engine from the new gt. First off it sounds amazing! It's more powerful, and if you put a v4 in an old school like that I can guarantee you will get alot of haters saying that's sac relig... That's my recommendation but honestly if you wanna do the Ecoboost enjoy and never look back !!!!

On his IG page you can see he hasn't open the block so turning up the boost on a big motor while having a stock engine will likely result in the engine failing. If he had a built motor he would easily be able to push more horsepower.

Don't think anyone is arguing this block is better for boost than a K20... but if you like boost and like the mustang this is what you get, doubt anyone is going to swap a K20 into this thing anytime soon haha

same thing with the f20c1 and f22c1 out of an s2000. Even with a smaller turbo such as a 63mm I've seen 400whp on 8psi.

c allen I mean, I think that would be pretty sweet, but it's just that S chassis cars seem to use cheese for sheet metal. Every time I've seen one that's been in any kind of light accident, they're totally folded up.

I won't comment on the ecoboost or anything like that, but in terms of the looks....that mustang looks badass. The GT350 front end with an open grill is one of the best looking front ends on the road at any price. Add in a great stance, nice wheels, etc etc. Car looks awesome inside and out.

I may catch some flack for this, but I think this chassis of mustang will be the next generation's 240SX. Before you all slaughter me, keep in mind the Mustang has a parts catalog that is unrivaled. From Ford alone you can use any eco-boost motor, Modular VA, or get really silly and do something crazy like a diesel. The motor availability coupled with the suspension components and tuner possibilities allow this car to be anything from drifter, to drag monster, to backroad hero.

I'm not gonna "slaughter" you, for sure. I own a 240SX, and I've been ogling the Mustang as my next new car. One of the things holding me back is the Mustang is REALLY big for a car with 2 functional seats, and it's 1000 lbs heavier than my 240. ...But the new Camaro is benefitting from its recent weight loss, and Ford is bound to take notice. It would be fine with me if Ford and Chevy got into a weight loss pissing contest. :D I certainly know what you mean about the parts catalog. My 240SX is a 1992 model, and the dealer doesn't have many replacement parts any more. I'm stuck with a noisy rear end because I can't get a new ring & pinion from the dealer, and no one locally wants to rebuild the one I've got. (Thank goodness "noisy" is the only thing wrong with it.) Mustang? You can buy a replacement for almost anything, for any year of Mustang. If I buy a Mustang I'll be able to buy any damn part, 30 years from now. I'm more worried about what I can work on myself. I might need to get my Mustang before they get any more complicated. :)

You are absolutely right in terms of weight. I'm also hopeful that a fight towards lightweight while maintaining 400+ hp begins between the Camaro and Mustang. As we've seen with current horsepower war, the consumer benefits the most when the car companies battle like this. Good luck in your search for your new project.

My roommate owns a 2020 ecoboost, and that thing is very fun to drive, I didn’t care too much for them, then I drove it, seriously underrated car, really wish Ford would make more of a “tuner” type car with all the same guts of the ecoboost mustang (including RWD), would be a really good time.

I am loving all these new turbo 4 cylinder factory cars. Its really exploding the aftermarket car industry right now at least for my market, I am so excited to turn my 1.5t civic si into a big turbo monster

I'm pretty sure this car has a Borg-Warner EFR7670 turbo - the "76mm" part is the exducer, while turbo size is typically measured with the inducer. That would make this a 57mm turbo.

Someone in my sports car club has one with a big intercooler. It dyno'ed 270hp and 312 ft-lbs at the wheels. Pretty respectable for 2.3L.

What keeps me from liking Ecoboost is that it has direct injection. The fuel bypasses the valves, so crud builds up on the valves and you can lose some power by the time you have 30,000 miles on the car. Forums for various makes and models have stories from people whose cars behave as if they're wearing out really fast, because the valves are dirty and eventually don't close correctly. (Subaru and Hyundai might have the worst side effects. Chevy owners rarely notice.) Also, Consumer Reports' ratings for Ford reliability dipped a bit when Ford started selling EcoBoost motors. Ford addressed the issue by putting dual injection on the 2018 Mustang GT. It uses direct injection most of the time, but if you keep your foot in it the port injectors open to add fuel and clean up the valves.

I love ecoboost mustangs they make the same power the original muscle cars and it's a 4cyl also v6 muscle cars are cool too the 70s challenger had a i6 I love v8s but I wouldn't get one just for the sound like what people say as an excuse

Normally i dont like to see these cars kitted/riced out, but it just suits the Ecoboost its like Ford made a JDM car once they used this motor and its really good ! This car blows the doors off the old SVO, and that was a great car.

Tinkering with e30 brings out great results too, getting dyno'd next Saturday most tune+ cars on JUST e30, tune+ , denso plugs and intercooler upgrade are looking at 330-340whp and 380-390 tq to the ground ..
