On May 27, 2023, I attended the 30th annual Authentic Bonnie and Clyde Festival in Gibsland, Louisiana. Every year the only living relatives of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow attend. Buddy Barrow, the son of Clyde’s youngest brother LC, is in his mid 70s. Bonnie’s niece, daughter of her older brother Buster, will turn 89 this October. She was kind enough to let me briefly interview her. I enhanced the interview with information about both of their lives, and I include stories they have told in other interviews that I have found. She talks about her childhood with Billie Jean, who raised her from age 7, the trio of old ladies Billie (Parker), Blanche (Barrow) and Marie (Barrow) and their antics, and family reactions to the 1967 Hollywood film (hint, it wasn’t good) lol. There is a brief talk of the effort to move Bonnie beside Clyde that is now in the courts. I cannot reveal any specifics of the case to protect their efforts but I give a few of my personal views which should be okay and do no harm. I include some footage of the festival as well, and stay tuned for an episode chronicling their final day alive in the very near future!
The original image of Bonnie which I altered in FaceApp to age progress was created by the RU-vid channel Mystery Scoop. Check them out, their PhotoShop creations of historical figures is amazing!
I also consulted an interview Rhea Leen and Buddy did for the Dallas Historical Society in 2021, for additional stories.

My father-in-law was about 17 when he was picked up by a couple while hitchiking. He was on his way home and it was a very hot day in Oklahoma. He said the couple were nice, they chatted a bit about where he lived and things, then let him off just down from where he lived in northeast Oklahoma. It was a couple years later when he saw a newsreel about their deaths. He said he didn't realize it was Bonnie and Clyde. He said they were nice to him.

Wow! Raeleen sure does look like her aunt Bonnie!…And so ironic that her given name was Bonnie Parker too. I can understand the name change to protect her, but she certainly was originally named correctly because she turned out to be the spitting image of her namesake. What a sweet lady! I hope she gets to see Bonnie moved soon. Thanks for posting this!

Bonnie Parker was a Jimmie Rodgers fan. Every time I hear the 1976 live version of T for Texas by Skynyrd I think of how Ronnie Van Zant would have been happily surprised to know this.

The wishes of Bonnie's mother should be respected. That's the closure needed by her family at that time. What they did should not be romanticized then or now. Many people had a hard life during the 30's but did not go around killing people. Digging up the grave will only add more circus activity to present day events. I am sure Rhea is a nice person and only trying to do what she thinks is right, but the right thing to do is to just let it alone and leave them be.
@Freeyourself206
@Freeyourself206 Месяц назад
However that is subjective. Reach person has their own definition of right and wrong. Also, Bonnie was an adult, so shouldn’t her wishes be respected?

At the end of the day they both killed innocent people. Husbands, fathers, and sons were killed at their hands. Families mourned their losses and struggled because their loved ones were brutally murdered. We as a culture have a bad habit of commemorating killers and forgetting their victims.

I've read books on Bonnie & Clyde, Pretty Boy Floyd, John Dillinger, the Barker/Karpis Gang and others. Part of the reason It's fascinating to me is because this was when my grandparents were in their 20's and 30's. This was their generation. Great interview!! Thanks!!

My mother's maiden name was Barrow. My grandpa, Rex Barrow, was said to be a young cousin to Clyde. My grandpa Rex's father was named George Barrow. We are from western Oklahoma. I remember old family stories from when Grandpa was a young boy when he knew Clyde. He said that he would remember once in a while, Clyde visited and my grandpa and his cousin Carl were young boys and they would meet him at the end of the long dirt road driveway and stand on the rails on the outside of Clyde's car and would ride down to the house. He said they were always excited when Clyde would come through to visit George because he would bring them soda pop and candy, and they rarely got that back then. Grandpa said he was just a little boy but remembered Clyde coming alone, and he was always nice and generous. I mention this only if Buddy is still alive or some of his family and recognizes any of the names i mentioned. There isn't hardly any of the Barrow family left. At least along my grandpa Rex and George 's branch. I understand the folklore and entertainment of the Bonnie and Clyde story, but i kinda feel like Billie Jean, let them rest in peace. They paid for their crimes.

I pray Rhea succeeds in having Bonnie moved to her *rightful* resting place. It really is what Bonnie wanted. Bonnie seemed to know she and Clyde would soon meet their end; she wrote a little poem about it and in it she made it clear she wanted to be by his side, even in death. I find the pair fascinating because they were so young, so in love, and true partners...even if it was in crime. My heart also goes out to them; especially Bonnie. She was just a baby, really, when she married her first husband. (Even though she was still legally married to him at the time of her death, everyone thinks of Clyde as her real husband.) She was so young when everything happened. She was also the original female badass. That picture of her smoking a cigar and holding a gun? Groundbreaking! Had anyone ever seen such a thing before? I'm pretty sure she'd count as the OG feminist, too, before feminism even existed. Some stories have since come out that paint her in a different light, running to the aid of those shot by her man, trying to talk Clyde out of shooting others, that she was sleeping in the back seat when some action weng down...I don't know if we'll ever get their full story. But I do pray Rhea succeeds in her mission. That is the saddest part of Bonnie and Clyde's fascinating love story....death did do them part

Of course there were badass women before Bonnie. The first example that comes to mind is Calamity Jane (1852-1903). She wore men's clothes, smoked cigars, drank alcohol, and was an amazing sharpshooter. She did some heroic things while working for the army. She was part of Buffalo Bill's Wild West show for a while. Overall she seems to have been a decent person, not a criminal like Bonnie. Some more from Wikipedia: "she helped save numerous passengers in an overland stagecoach by diverting several Plains Indians who were in pursuit of the vehicle. Stagecoach driver John Slaughter was killed during the pursuit, and Jane took over the reins and drove the stage on to its destination at Deadwood. In late 1876 or 1878, Jane nursed the victims of a smallpox epidemic in the Deadwood area."

The people today can t understand that Bonnie & Clyde lived through the great depression and how life was hard. That s why there were so many people turning to crime. I don t condone what they did but understand the context when it happened. You re very lucky to have had this interview and it was very interesting hearing from Bonnie s niece. Thank you for posting. I d give you 2 thumbs up if I could.
@jenniferlloyd9574
@jenniferlloyd9574 Год назад
Exactly. Bonnie and Clyde were from areas that didn't have a lot of opportunities AND they were kinda poor. Young people would commit petty crimes like shoplifting and end up getting sentenced to hard time. Not paying for gas was rampant in the depression. Guy pumps a man's gas and the customer beats it after the gas jockey screws the cap back on... When men got out of prison, they didn't have many options for jobs. Partly the depression and partly their history. To top that off, they were now "hardened". Add to that the fact that past convicts would swear they'd never to back to serving time. Ever. Cars could give them a quick getaway and Tommy Guns were readily available. Banks were like sitting ducks. A formula for crime.

My dad was born December 1929 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Of course he didn't remember hearing about them as a small child, but he told me his parents talked about it later. When the authorities were on their manhunt, people were told to be on the lookout. People were really scared. When they were killed, people were relieved and a little sad. There were only newspapers and radio. The news was having a field day calling them "cop killers"... Most people were honest and law-abiding. My grandma used to feed hobos off her back porch in Stillwater during the depression. Mostly beans and cornbread, which is all the family could afford to eat besides their garden, chickens and rabbits. Grandpa was a firefighter, so he was lucky to have a city job.

I think the reason why their story is so captivating is that it was a real life "Romeo and Juliet' tragedy. It has all the elements of a great story - star-crossed lovers fighting the system - a fight they both knew they'd never survive - the law having to bring expert trackers like Hamer - the narrow escapes etc. And like you said had they been caught and not died so extraordinarily and so young they would have been just a footnote in gangster lore.

I remember reading what the funeral home documented about Bonnie. Her finger and toenails were meticulously painted. She was very fastidious about grooming and her appearance. The embalmer said there were so many bullet holes that the embalming fluid kept running out as fast as he could put it in... In _that_ heat... The authorities had to catalogue the items in her purse. Included were a face powder and lipstick. I don't remember the brand, but it may have been du Barry; a good quality and popular cosmetic line. I think their powder was spun with their du Barry cold cream. For extra moisturizing.

The B&C's story begs for the sensational over enthusiasm it has gathered over time but as usual the true story is so much more interesting and folks like you help keep on track. Thank you for doing what you do. It always cracks me up when they're described as gangsters or cold blooded killers. These were two scared kids on the run living hand to mouth. Now I do concede that Clyde was very good in a gun fight getting away and escaping all the traps and bullets set for them. They were two wounded and worn out scared kids trying to live another day.. Not gangsters by any stretch of the imagination.

I became interested in Bonnie and Clyde's story this last year and have watched documentaries and read several books. While I in no way condone the murders, I feel some sympathy for these two young people. My parents were about 10 years younger and I heard many tragic stories of the Depression and the desperation of the people who had lost everything. But the saddest part of the story to me was Clyde's experience in prison. Without that horror I wonder what he might have become.

I've been obsessed with B&C since I was 14 . I read EVERYTHING about those 2 . I have seen some photos that I've never seen before . you you REALLY did your homework . I'm very impressed with your programs. I even watch them several times. You include pics , interviews. I live in Texas near Ft.Hood and it was rumored that they stayed a week here. Lol staying a week anywhere for them was dangerous anyway the only thing I did verify to me fact was the murder in temple which I have visited many times. Cold blooded senseless murder. Anyway. I love to see the location of these sites and when you superimpose old video over new. That's really impressive. EXELLENT video as ALWAYS your hard work is paying off

Honestly, I love how Bonnie and Clyde, stood up for themselves! They lived life as the modern day Romeo and Juliette. Killing the innocent, yeah well that's never right, cept in defense and even then, I think I'd so ptsd it. But Miss Bonnie Parkers Neice, Rayleigh, is such a gem! So genuinely bright and truthful. I can just see her eyes a twinkling as she tells these stories.❤

Thank you for this very informative and entertaining video. I remember seeing the movie, “Bonnie & Clyde” in 1967. I also have Blanch’s book. There is something about the Bonnie & Clyde story that captivates people. The 1930s was truly a unique time in American history. Personally, I would take Bonnie & Clyde over the crazy woke world we have today. Back then, there were more good people than bad. That cannot be said of today.

I disagree with you using the word woke! Is it woke, that allows mentally unstable people to buy assault rifles and mow down masses of innocent people every day? No, that’s a gop narrative about their so called rights. Don’t use words that aren’t appropriate!

@@highcountrydelatite correct. The 1967 movie is riffled with inaccuracies and incomplete. Such as Bonnie’s legs being severely burned in a car accident. The portrayal of Blanche was very misleading. Even their meeting is misrepresented.

Can't blame them for wanting to survive.

Life and adventures of Polk Wells (Charles Knox Poll Wells) : the notorious outlaw, whose acts of fearlessness and chivalry kept the frontier trails afire with excitement, and whose roberies [sic] and other depredations in the Platte Purchase and elsewhere, have been a most frequent discussion to this day, all of which transpired during and just after the Civil War by Wells, Charles Knox Polk, b. 1851

I was probably around 11 or 12 which would have been the mid to late 60’s. It might have been right around the time the movie came out. I’ve just never cared for it. I also read that Blanche said something to the effect that they made her seem like a real horses ass….lol! I think that’s mentioned it this interview. But if it got people interested I guess the movie served it’s purpose.

I find the cars of the late 20's through the 30's to be very, very sexy. The suicide doors are really cool, too. Just my favorite era for cars. The fashions for men and women are the best, too. If I could have one of those cars to drive every day and be able to dress that way all the time, I'd be extremely happy. Oddly, I look my best in those clothes and hairstyles. Dressed that way for Halloween one year and couldn't believe how natural it felt to me... Got a lot of compliments, as well. Sigh...

Also Bonnie seemed to be creative in her poetry, clothing and the posing for pictures, women of her time really had no chance back then for a different life. Who would Bonnie be in 2023 if you could bring her forward in time before the killings, because that cemented her fate, wether she killed anyone herself or not.

I went to the John Dillinger Museum in Nashville, IN as a kid and found out I was related to Dillinger's wife (Beryl). Ever since I have read just about everything on him and the rest of the Depression Era criminals I could find. It's amazing to me how the narrative on a lot of the topics have shifted over the years, how the perception of those criminals has been impacted by movies, and just how little is known as absolute truth about them. At the end of the day, they were people just like you and I. All of them were young and daring and made bad decisions. They were a product of their times, a brand created by the news outlets needing to sell papers, and even had their exploits manipulated by J Edgar to help the fledgling FBI get established. It's really an amazing culmination of things that make Bonnie and Clyde, Dillinger, Pretty Boy and Baby Face historical figures that will probably never be rivaled in their infamy. I really enjoy these episodes but honestly the majority of your videos have been interesting to watch. Keep up the good work.

Miss ma'am.. We need to pull all the stops to honor rhea and buddy. Is there a petition? If not, let's make one. My daddy always told me it wasn't my business to just stay out of that. But times have changed since then in the way the world works. We have internet, and we have petitions now, and they're real and they have worked for many others. I believe it's on our hands now to go through with this and, make it be done. The interest will not die because one romance like that just isn't like it anymore. These days love is conditional. The other reason is because it's the people's heroes. They did what we the people man then could never. It was a different time, so for people like me it's so interesting. If my grandpa wasn't who he was, i wouldn't know how those times were. For me, that time period was my grandpas peak of youth. He was an evil man, but he saw fit that we were all protected.. and so back then with no id driver license ss, it's just a different world. A simpler time that we would rather have lived in. Anyway... Let me know about the petition. I know i could bring at least over a hundred signatures.

This was a very interesting video, particularly the interview. Like a lot of people, I got interested after seeing the old Bonnie and Clyde movie and all of the hype surrounding it, and because I am a history junkie and want to know the history and true story behind what I see, read, and hear. I would like to know if and when Bonnie's remains are reburied with Clyde's. If that was or would have been her choice, then it should be respected. What strikes me now is how very young they were. I suspect that may have played a part in some of the things they did (despite the fact that that excuses nothing).

…..It would be very interesting if you did an episode about the Keough Native American massacre right outside Jacksonville, Texas…it was the last known Indian attack that happened in Texas. You can Google the directions. There is a large obelisk there that was erected by the state of Texas, along with quite a few graves that are marked with flat headstones that mark graves of victims. Now, I have also read that it was later found out that it was white men who did this attack and not Native Americans. I am a third generation Texan and am from Irving, Texas but have lived within 25 to 40 miles from Jacksonville for over 40 years but had never heard of this massacre until we happened to be going through Jacksonville one day and my husband asked me if I had ever heard of this and took me to see it. I was shocked that something like this had happened so close to us. It is a very interesting site that should be taught about in schools in Texas. I think that there are probably a lot of people who would be interested in it. Your Bonnie and Clyde episode was very interesting and I think Bonnie Parker’s body should be moved and put next to Clyde…..why not? Good luck ! Nancy Curtis.
