I first saw it as a teen and knew there was something about it, but didn't think I could ever watch it again and gave me the chills for like a week. Now that I've grown to love cinema as cinema, so great! PTA is my favorite director btw.

It’s interesting that although the characters in Boogie Nights are for the most part much better people than the ones in Goodfellas, they would probably be more ostracized if they tried to go back to the “normal” world. Even now, ex mobsters and killers are idolized while sex workers have to live the rest of their lives with it as a mark of Cain of sorts.

One of the best things about Boogie Nights is that the soundtrack is back to back, always rolling, and most songs are played in their entirety on top of being classics. It really shows how thought out PTA was when he made that movie. There is not one moment of one song in one scene of the movie that seems out of place. Incredible film.

Technically Boogie Nights is more inspired by John Holmes than actually being "based" off of him, if that makes sense. They definitely take a lot of inspiration from him, but Goodfellas is definitely more a straight biographical sort of film.

I absolutely love this. Filmmaking is not about reinventing the wheel. In most aspects, it's storytelling. It's once apon a time and they live happily ever after. Some of the best acting I have ever seen in film is in these two films. The restaurant scene in good fellas. The scene where Dirk Reid and Todd go to rip off that crazy millionaire. One of the most insane scenes of all time. I was freaked out, and laughing my ass off at the same time. But I also think that alot of both films greatness lies not just in the direction, but both films feature acting performances that are simply incredible. Not just the main players. But the surrounding cast. The Billy Batts charater in good fellas. The Todd Parker character in Boogie nights. They were so well acted. Glad you did this. Would love to see your take on Casino. Also The usual suspects. Two more films worthy of analysis. Have a nice day. 😀
@daniel_netzel
@daniel_netzel 6 лет назад
Totally agree, and I think these are perfect examples to illustrate how you can make a film all your own, something truly incredible, but to wear your inspiration on your sleeve and be okay with that. And yeah, there's no denying how absolutely phenomenal the acting is in both films. Thanks so much! Maybe some day! Casino I haven't seen in a really long time, and Usual Suspects is admittedly not my favorite, but you never know! Thank you, you too!
@groznyproductions7781
@groznyproductions7781 6 лет назад
I could not agree more. People focus too much on breaking in by differentiating themselves rather than proving they know what they are doing. I see this a lot in the works of Nicolas Winding Refn. There's talent there, but he focuses too much on breaking the rules rather than proving he know the rules in the first place. It's a belief of mine you must prove the rules in order to break them; but all of that is secondary to the essence of film: telling a story.

I don’t even think Henry deserved the money he got, he lied and betrayed somebody who loves him and in the end, got the best possible outcome. Witness protection when all the people who put everything on the line for him rot in jail.

Jimmy tried to set Henry up to get killed in Florida on a fake hit assignment, so the argument can certainly be made that Jimmy lied to him and betrayed him first. Jimmy had no reservations about having Henry killed if it was to save his own neck. After all, he had all of the other guys who were connected to the Lufthansa heist murdered. The ugly reality of the criminal underworld is that loyalty doesn't really exist.

Boogie nights brought about an interesting epiphany for me. I had found out a friend of mine had never seen it, and invited him and his old lady over to watch it. I had always recognized and appreciated it's dramatic weight, and the depth of it's characters, but in my mind it was still an enjoyable watch, and the comedy hit all the right notes to even it out. I think you know where this story is heading. Fifteen minutes into screening the film the mood in the room was not unlike if I had invited them over to watch a fucking snuff film.

Scarface, casino, Goodfellow, Jackie brown, pulp fiction...all have a party like atmosphere for the first half of the movies, with the main characters mostly being successful and having a good time. Scarface literally ends its "party" after the "push it to the limit"montages. He gets married and you see the cash rolling in. The very first scene after that is his wife being unhappy.

Fantastic video contrasting two different movies that wrap together common threads. I like writing, I'm a 5th year college student. The same year I took my college curriculum placement test- I spent 1/2 a year writing an epic, heavily violent but philosophical, 12 chapter storyline about an elite group of different female samurai warriors- who act as their some of their nation's original law enforcement units- The main character has a reasonable lifespan- I do however kill off a couple main characters- one being her original village-watch ally. I wrote it to be as gruesome as Robocop, as lovingly romantic as 'She's Having A Baby' and has organnized crime-style details for the Ancient-Japanese-style Scarface inspired main enemies- with their 'Boss' being their Emporere's TRADE MINISTER! LOL. I converted to a different faith and know I cannot go back to it.

Sonny Barger, the founder of the Hells Angels wrote a book similar to all this. He partied and did what he felt like in the 60s and 70s. By the time the 80s rolled around so many laws changed. America changed altogether, party is over.

I really like the "gun on the wall" metaphor and intend to steal it, with pertinent "fair use" claims.

Haha, well, in fairness it's not even my line, that comes from that interview with Paul Thomas Anderson and even he most likely heard it somewhere else first.

@@daniel_netzel The line originally comes from Chekhov: *If in the first act you have hung a pistol on the wall, then in the following one it should be fired. Otherwise don't put it there.*

Interesting analysis. I also found a lot of parallels between Boogie Nights and Scarface. Minus the family element Both protagonists come from nothing Both protagonists do something immoral to rise to the top Both protagonists enjoy success Both protagonist let their ego and greed run out of control Both protagonist let their drug problems get the better of them Both protagonist falls from grace Only, Tony Montana gets blasted, but Dirk Diggler gets a second chance

the rise and fall of these two stories has in common the cocaine issue and money to fuel it. I've seen too many brought down by it. I knew a beautiful woman who's only son still won't talk to her 15 years later and for good reason. She wasn't there for him when he really needed her.
