So you see the ump doing the same thing to Boone and getting away with it? On how the Yankees should have 90 wins with this talent? Or how they should have at least two championships since the start of 2018? But they haven't sniffed a world series in that time.
@weevie833
@weevie833 2 года назад
@@brianschaffer9220 "...with this talent"? They are not as deep in talent as you'd think. Even through the win streak, it was clear to some of us that this was not much better a team than last year - just fewer GIDP and some hot pitching (which gone now). They will make a quick playoff exit, for sure.
@daneg
@daneg 2 года назад
@@weevie833 imo the staring pitching was always a time bomb. Cole is the only frontliner. I love Nestor, but he can be hit. Sevy was bound to fall apart. Nobody in that rotation strikes fear in a postseason game. the hitting was never good despite the names. outside of judge, trevino and carpenter, everyone in the lineup is under-performing. but the bullpen falling apart has really broken the team, imo. at one point, they had the best bullpen, and it wasn't just smoke and mirrors. I'm very concerned. Hicks seems to think he's a home run hitter and tries to pull everything on either side of the plate - psst: your job is get on base for judge, stanton, and rizzo! They needed to get rid of Sanchez, but all they did was get older at 3B. love Rizzo, but the back issues were inevitable. Same with Stanton and his myriad IL stints. this is a lineup with about 5 DHs. it's poorly constructed, imo.

In that same game, this plate umpire was hit in the face mask hard--in I believe the 8th inning. He waddled around woozy for a good three minutes, clearly disoriented and overheated, with Yadi, and the Cards medical staff holding him up. When looking at cams from behind the plate it's a miracle the Ums even get it right as much as they do. Robot should give the signal and the Ump can stand there and call it and look for other stuff and throw the ball back or whatever his other jobs are. Or at least test the umpires in a camp pre-season. If they can't call well, they don't get to work. Many other sports test their officials year over year and as they age, they're essentially forced to call it quits because their eyes and reaction times slow to the point that they can no longer pass those tests.

Honestly the poor guy was so exhausted he wasn’t even in his right mind to even defend his calls. The umpires don’t get inning breaks like the catchers do and these guys are no spring chickens. @@VinylUnboxings Its a list of statistics of a Ump during the game. Where everything is reviewed in hindsight where there is no time pressure. I believed these scorecards are used to evaluate umps. As an American football referee down here in Brazil, we follow the IFAF guidelines. One of them is "keep a standard during the game. If you call something a holding where it wouldn't usually be a holding, keep that standard for the rest of the game." and I think that is fair enough considering amateur leagues. So, calling those strikes consistently is something I can understand, but when it's inconsistent it's when all the good work goes down the drain. The teams pick up on that and rightfully so protest those calls, your credibility goes to the mud and if a close game ends one the teams will have very valid arguments against you and your calls. It's not great. . When it comes down to the pros, I expect the very best in all departments, especially the referees. We shouldn't ever be remembered when we are on the field. The fact that I know about Angel and I don't even follow Baseball (besides those fantastic breakdowns here) is daunting.

Not yet. There are so many different systems used to call balls and strikes, and most of them have different strike zones to each other, and capture the ball at different locations. Umps can see that the plate is 3D; the ball at the front of the plate and at the back are at different locations. If it's in the zone at the front of the plate but moves out at the end, if the Robo-Ump captures it at the end, it would wrongly be called a ball. They should be used, yes, but they shouldn't replace umps. Besides Angel.

Still are cool with it. This guy was not even remotely consistent throughout the game. from the first inning until he got hit in the face in the 8th he called one pitch one way and then the same pitch a different way, back and forth the whole game. Pitches nearly dead center of the zone were balls, other batters box was strikes sometimes, high, low, inside, outside. It was mess
@TaylorAdams12
@TaylorAdams12 2 года назад
Nah, I’m good with expanding the strike zone high and low. Adjusting that from batter to batter and with no great indicator of where it should be is TOUGH. But there’s absolutely no excuse for missing calls horizontally. The strike zone ends at the edge of the plate, period. If an ump consistently can’t see when a ball misses the plate by a full inch or more, then that ump shouldn’t be back there. Quite literally, that makes them unqualified to do the job. Missing a judgement call is one thing, heck even consistently missing judgement calls is one thing, consistently missing very obvious calls is another thing entirely.

Definitely the young umps are better. But I don’t think it’s age. Rather, I think the younger folks were held to higher standards than their older counterparts. The latter were good but not held to the standards their younger counterparts were, they got the jobs and are grandfathered in and thus protected by the union. The former had to earn their spot in a generation of pitch tracking. They’re just better. And, in due time, via retirement, we’ll have a roster of the best umpires the game has ever seen. Even when these young umps are nearing 65, I think they’ll be better than those currently at 65 just because of the higher standards placed upon them. That’s not a knock on those elder umpires. I love the human element of officiating. I just want some humility and some consistency. Imagine all of the better umps from back in the day that never got called up because they didn’t check the right box or eschewed politics.
@snerdterguson

What do you like about obviously missed calls by umpires being deciding factors in athletic competition? I'm honestly asking. I've heard the human element arguments and I just don't understand them. @Pee-Pad

@@snerdterguson The best way to answer a loaded question is to challenge the unsupported assumption contained therein. Literally nothing in my contribution suggested I “like…obviously missed calls.” I don’t. I like “the human element of officiating.” I’ve said on Close Call Sports channel that I appreciate a good punch out as much as a good bat flip. What I dislike are quick triggers and huge egos. I’m for an automated strike zone with an umpire behind the dish relaying. But, nothing in my comment was referring to any of that. I was talking about how the youngest umpires are better due to their training in a pitch tracking environment. We naturally selected for these umpires due to the pressures of technology, in evolutionary terms.
