My VVT is still not working! I'm troubleshooting the VVT system in the boosted Miata in this part 3 episode. Do I finally solve the problem - check it out!

Diesel Oil usually helps with valve tick as well since they're hydraulic valves

Earlier engines. The VVTs are solid lifters.

hence the reason im here. car sat for a few months and the normal oil is probly gunked in places

Hilarious move pulling your neighbor's solenoid. Gonna keep watching to see you solve this. Mine is just pulling that ticking noise and I may need to replace the actuator. I'm sure you are aware of the mazda bulletin stating that a little pin and its receptacle wear out.

MiataMods the display is a pioneer appradio headunit that mirrors my smartphone. I connect to my ecu via Bluetooth on my phone then operate it with the appradio.

That's really cool! I just saw the last part of your video where you did use a camera mount so never mind :-) Good luck with the VVT issues, I hope you can find the problem!

what is your oil pressure when it fails ?

hristo iliev don't know.I only have the stock pressure gauge that doesn't give pressure, just a needle that sits at 5/8.

You can install one of the older ones that read presaure. If you feel like it. But i would chek your oil pressure make shure its in spec. Turbo miattas love to wear oil pump gears

Supper high oil temp would aslo cause it to fail

are you sure ecu doesn't tell the VVT solenoid to back off when engine temp reaches normal operation?

Great question, yes pretty sure it's not in the ECU settings. There is a VVT settings parameters and it does include a coolant active temperature settings - meaning "work only if coolant above XXX degrees" but it's set for -40 deg. F, so can't be that.

Boosted Miata curious; are you letting the engine warm up before testing ? I mean keep rpm under 2.5-3k until engine is warm? on the k series engine with the vtec solenoid will put engine in limp mode or not allow vtec to engage till engine temp is normal. Yes I know totally different engines but similar functions.

Yes - it's actually operating temp when I drive it and it works, but for only a few miles / minutes each time. When I overlay the coolant temp with the VVT angle in my data log, there is no correlation actually. It has more to do with time driven. I'm wondering if it's oil pressure / oil temp related?

I was just wondering if there's something retarding the vvt timing on the engine's behalf. I come from tuning Audi's and some of the maps in S4/A6's do some pretty crazy shit.

+seth alton no, the vvt settings are identical to when it was working before. I'm pretty sure it is the vvt cam gear I used because my original one was lost when I was rebuilding the engine.
