According to my research Obama's policy was to " catch & release" so that young children could stay with their parents. Catch and release is a horrible policy as well. If there is no punishment the crime will be repeated. If the families are separated for an excessive amount of time ( while the authorities determine if they are really family and if any of that family is wanted for serious crimes) then I completely agree the president and government are wrong. But the president and government was also wrong during catch and release because it did not address the problem, just postponed it. So let's start with providing solutions to said problem. 1. The government should declare a war on these "gangs". Label them as terrorists. 2. Get serious about drugs. Legalizing marijuana and shutting down these gangs trafficking people and narcotics. 3. Grant immigrants who come through a port of entry that have no criminal history with a temporary status. If found guilty of a felony within their temporary status period of say 3 to 5 years then they get deported after their jail time is served. 4. No wall needed, but the penalty for not coming in through the designated entry point will result in a felony eliminating you from future consideration of temporary or permanent legal status. Just a few ideas to start.

I was just talking to a “friend” that is here illegally and she gave me a whole new insight about this illegal immigration thing! She has been here for 13 years. She has never paid taxes (other than sales taxes) in the past 13 years that she has been here. She gets $897 a month in food stamps because her $14/hr job does not report her salary (but she get $2 less an hour than people who have to pay taxes. Fair, right?). She gets free healthcare for her 4 children and free healthcare for herself as a “caregiver”. She also sends up to 75% of her income back to Mexico for her family. She works side jobs for extra money for her and the kids (that she keeps). She giggled and said “That’s why my family is coming here! My brother and 2 sisters just got here” So while my husband and I pay over $40k a year in taxes, she, her children AND her family in Mexico get a free ride. What about this is ok?!?! I started this conversation hoping that she would give me a reason to feel bad for these boarder jumpers. She made me worse!!! I’m not just mad now, I’m absolutely livid😡 I had to add this too!!! She also informed me that she has NEVER had to buy her children’s Christmas. Their Christmas has always been donated but up to THREE different charities INCLUDING DSS. Some of these kids are being abused by their parents. These kids are terrified. Some of the conditions the families live in in their home country makes it worth the journey. This guy is doing his job, and doing it well. This woman is pretty disrespectful right off the bat. How does she not understand that the 'law on the books' separating families is not one law, it's a consequence of the criminal process. They have to arrest anyone, even Americans, who enter the country through the river etc. They need to speed up the proceedings but the choices are releasing all the parents, some of whom are convicted of dangerous crimes, putting the kids in jail with them, which is obviously not a safe option, or taking them away until family members can be found to take the kids. It's a brutal situation. But I think there's an argument to be made about giving people without a record asylum status regardless of where they come in from. If you live in a place where you fear for your life and don't speak English well or at all, you might not even know the difference bc you're just too desperate to get out. I'm Canadian and I don't really know the difference, but my family has been held and questioned at the border for hours because they are from southern Italy. So if that's happened before I can see why you'd want to take the risk if you're trying to protect your family
+gia I agree with most of what you're saying, but we can't just grant every person asylum. Most of the people crossing the border illegally are economic migrants. Some of them are paying human traffickers $6,000 to get them across the border. At least that's the number the mother of the girl from the TIME magazine cover paid someone - I'm sure it can be more in some cases. If they have that much money to pay someone to help them cross the border illegally, then they certainly have enough money to put together a legitimate case for an asylum request and go through the proper channels. That is, of course, unless they don't have a legitimate case for asylum. Also, if we started granting everyone asylum, immediately the numbers of asylum seekers would spike and the system would just be bogged down even more so than it already is. Some of these people really are fleeing from dangerous areas, but ya know there are dangerous areas in the U.S., too - e.g. Compton, CA; Camden, NJ; parts of Chicago. We're not granting people in those areas asylum to a safe state like North Dakota, and we can't grant asylum to every single person coming from an unfortunate situation.

No amount of toys and air conditioning will ever be worth having your kids raped. No way. I rather eat potatoes under a tree than having mu kids in such traumatic journey. I have lived in poverty, i know how it feels. So I can tell you, no riches will ever be worth doing that to yourself and your kids. This interview is beyond frustrating. The law he needed to refer to was the one put in place by the 9th Circuit that specified that children of the incarcerated cannot be incarcerated with them. That necessitates their being separated, & the law has been on the books since the late 90s. It has nothing to do with Trump, other than that he's enforcing it.
