Bouncing Back: How I Fixed My Compost Spreader

A week ago I opened my van door, and the compost spreader fell out of my van. It landed straight in the spring clips and both of them broke!.
What was I going to do? I need the spreader for a job the next day!
I ended up reverting back to spreading the compost on the lawn using a broom. (on this video: • Spring Lawn Care: Step... ).. but I knew I wanted the be using the spreader again, as fast as I could..
I even considered buying one of the dirt cheap ones from Amazon.. As a last minute idea, I called Ryan at garden Imports, and he suggested a clip replacement kit. (you need the right set for your particular model).. It came and I decided to change them myself. Here is the kit for my (pre-2023) model: www.gardenimports.co.uk/produ...
My DIY skills are not the best, although I am getting better and more confident, hence this video! If I can do it, honestly you can do it!

Love your videos Shaun been following you for months! Quick tip as an engineer, the best way to remove a rivet is to drill it with an over side drill bit eg. For a 5mm rivet use a 10mm drill and just drill the head odd and knock the compressed end (the inside) out with a nail or similar. Much quicker and you dont risk opening the hole out in which the rivet sits in 😉

Thanks Ben! I like that tip! .. Can I ask is it really important to get a super snug fit on the rivet when pushing into the hole? On each clip I had one rivet snug and the 2nd rivet needed a smaller head to fit inside the clip

@@LawnRight no the rivet doesn't have to be snug in the hole it can have a little slack when putting it in the hole. You just need to make sure when compressing the rivet the larger round part (the head) is press against the surface and it will pull up tight mate👌

Good job, Shaun! Any repair that gets you back to work is good. When installing more than one rivet in an item, you can set the first rivet and match drill the remaining holes and set a rivet one at a time to ensure they all fit. For snug rivets, it doesn't take much offset between the holes to make it tough for the rivet to fit.

I was using mine yesterday and I'm looking at the clips like i hope these don't eventually break lol they look abit flimsy on my 2nd year Always make sure i carry "the heavy bugger" over concrete

I'm in awe at how great gardenimports were on this. Direct with a "yeah we have a kit for that" perfect for sorting kit. Really loved the DIY element as you made it seem so easy to do! Cleanly explained and described the process. Glad it all got fixed so nicely. I'm no expert but looks a fantastic fix to me !

Thank you for the content I have been watching your videos and looking to follow your step by step I was looking at your recommendations on field 4 compost but it works out £26 a bag do you think it makes a big difference compared to the stuff your can get in the shops for like £7?

Hi.. Its just a lot finer in texture. I really like the home bargains growmoor brand in purple bags which is a lot more cost effective

Yesterday, finally got to scarify my front lawn and spread 4 bags of compost with a rake. Heavy rain through the night , welcome for once, Expecting good results in a week or two. Back lawn like a bog - bring on summer. Could cable ties have fixed the clips?

D. I. Y = Don't involve yourself. I'd just of used reusable cable ties to close the hatch. ( or bought a better quality spreader in the first place 🙄)

I bought the 24-inch Landzie spreader last year, and the clips are on the side. The larger Landzie spreaders have the clips like those on Shaun's spreader.

They were brand new, I just assumed they would already be sharp.. in fact I didn't even know you could? OMG if you can then OMG. Ive wasted countless drill bits over the years for being rubbish... now I need to google this! lol

@@LawnRight Might they have been drill bits for wood versus ones for drilling metal? It just appeared to me that they were having a hard time getting through the metal.

@@LawnRight ah very nice. I have seen a couple other brands and they are side mounting the clips so they don't get damaged rolling in the ground. Hope they send you a new model to use.
