Box was freezing the runners because it was his job to collect food for the city and freeze it for storage. When the runners came through, he thought they were food so he froze them too.
As the film stands, Box captured food for the city from the outside as well as captured runners & freezing them. However, this is not how it was written or shot. Per the director's commentary on DVD, in a cut scene that no longer exists Box asks Logan & Jessica to pose nude & he begins to sculpt them in ice so that their actual bodies would be used for food. This is also where Logan & Jessica learn they love each other, something lost in their society. Cut for time, some suggest to keep it PG.
Gotta respect the actor who sat in Box during these scenes. That costume looks like it could of flipped and sent them head first into the ground. Especially during the that introduction where they come down that ramp. Sheesh! Box always creeper me out and weirdly reminds me of Sam the Snowman from Rudolph. I think its the beady eyes and deep bass voice.
Hard to believe, but Roscoe Lee Brown (Box) did the roles of Saunders on _Soap,_ Francis in Disney's _Oliver and Company,_ and the narrator of _Babe_ and _Babe: Pig in the City._
interesting. I was always curious if whether Box was from the world before whatever crisis destroyed the world or if he was designed by the A.I. that controlled the society. The latter seems to be the case. More details would've been perfect for the eerieness that was Box.
one of my favorite all time SF-movies. I remember see it as a kid and saying how wonderful it was. It, however, is a bit dated and I'm surprised no one has done an update to this allegory.
I prefer to think of it as "of its time" rather than "dated". The retro vibe gives it an otherworldly authenticity, like it's an imagined future from the past.
"Why dost thou thunder with frozen Spectrous wrath against us? The Spectre is, in Giant Man; insane, and most deform'd. Thou wilt certainly provoke my Spectre against thine in fury! He has a Sepulcher hewn out of a Rock ready for thee:" -William Blake
Its just a shame that in those days they never thought about saving deleted scenes. Who would even think about destroying video with a nude Jenny Agutter. It boggles the mind.
You can see the missing 'cut' Ice Sculpture of Logan And Jessica at the 1:10 mark. As the grate falls from the ceiling and hits the ground, find it to the left of Box (while his arms are raised)!
I already do that frequently, thanks. You might want to check if you've crapped your pants though, I hear that political types do that whenever they see something that *gasp* doesn't have shit to do with democrats, republicans, the President, etc.
so..who is box freezing? are they previous runners or are they the victims of the carousel? how comes that fella with the cats has survived on his own in the wild long enough for washington dc to become a jungle and remembers having a family and the concept of parents etc while everyone else seems to have been bred in an underground metropolis led by a maniacal artificial intelegence and doomed to die at 30 for what seems like generations?..i need to watch this again or read the book i think
