In today's video we look at BREATH HOLDING as a DOWN REGULATOR | Oxygen Advantage & Functional Breathing
Strong breath holds can be great for certain individuals. Strong breath holds can be amazingly beneficial. But strong breath holds can also be considered a stressor exercise, and for that reason, they are not right for everyone.
Luckily, we can modify our breath holds to also be down-regulators. By using mini-breath holds or medium breath holds, you can actually stimulate the vagus nerve, elicit vasodilation and bronchodilation, and truly calm the nervous system.
Mild to moderate breath holds are much more appropriate for specific demographics.
👉Subscribe to BE Light TT for more natural cures and self care tips for mental health and stress management, to teach you how to deal with anxiety, how to reduce stress, and how to balance your autonomic nervous system.

@zf vakil hello again. Thanks again for this recommendation to do more ear massage videos. Unfortunately, I have already shown quite a bit of what I know/do in my other 2 tutorials🤷‍♀. Also, other than your very gracious requests, there is just not much demand for that work. If I can think of something else very interesting about the ears to share, I promise to do so! In the mean time, I made a Jaw Release video, not too long ago, which obviously connects directly into the ears. You might enjoy that session. I will include the URL here, in case you are interested. Many thanks for your feedback. I really appreciate it. Have a great day! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qsu-3LzWtow.html

Hi Tara, , Thank you for your video. My question is, what’s the best breathing exercise for hypertension
@BELightTT
@BELightTT Год назад
Hi @Lettylett Thanks so much for watching! For hypertension, I definitely would not practice breath holds, actually. You're gonna want to practice anything that encourages slow breathing. You might want to check out this video on the topic. I hope it helps! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AO_1IPA5ujc.html

Wonderful Tara for these breathing tips. Does breathing impact the voice and volume?
@BELightTT
@BELightTT Год назад
@R definitely! Many of us practitioners would consider the human body to have at least 4 diaphragms, including cranial, cervical, thoracic and pelvic ones. Part of the job of these diaphragms is to regulate pressure throughout the different cavities of the body. For that, breathing and "breath support" is absolutely critical for vocal functioning, control and volume. Great question, Bala!🙌

Can you advise which phase of the menstrual cycle strong breath holds (luteal?) are contraindicated, in your experience? I've seen women report longer, heavier periods, as well as excessive menstrual cramping, when they have used the Wim Hof breathing method, citing sensitivity to CO2. I'm looking to address obstructed sleep apnea with alternative therapies (soft palate closes on exhalation while I am awake), and Oxygen Advantage offers the Buteyko method as part of their sleep apnea course work, but I fear that any breath holds or therapies that require the build up CO2 will adversely affect me or may not be suitable for women.
@BELightTT
@BELightTT Год назад
Hi @Diana Cloudsupernova Let me try to address your concerns one at a time. 1. In general, women tend to be stronger, faster, sharper, and more resilient during the first half of their cycles (follicular phase). This means this is the time to do intermittent fasting, do high-intensity training and practice stronger breath holds. As you head into the second half of your cycle (luteal phase) many women will experience a natural decrease in their CO2 tolerance as progesterone physiologically sparks a certain amount of unconscious hyperventilation (meaning blowing off TOO MUCH CO2, and consequently negatively impacting CO2 threshold). 2. WHM is a HYPERVENTILATION technique! It does NOT build up CO2! It completely depletes it! The long breath holds that are possible from practicing WHM are due to the fact that the practitioner is blowing off so much CO2, that no danger signal gets sent to their brain telling them to breathe. This also causes vasoconstriction and a lack of bloodflow and oxygen to the brain and other vital organs, which certainly can cause more severe menstrual cramping. Everyone is, of course, different, but I never recommend WHM to my clients, especially if you are already suffering with low CO2 tolerance. You may want to check out this video I made on different types of breath holds. Perhaps it will offer some insights: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TtfX0YrE9WQ.html 3. In terms of OSA, the techniques of Buteyko and Oxygen Advantage can be brilliant for helping to train more functional breathing and more integrous airways. I'd say that functional breathwork training, in conjunction with an orofacial myofunctional therapist, and perhaps a skilled sleep coach, can be a magical combination. And to be clear again, the breath holds of Buteyko and Oxygen Advantage are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than those of WHM. Buteyko and OA practice HYPERCAPNIC breath holds (practicing building up CO2 tolerance in order to create vasodilation and bronchodilation, better blood and oxygen delivery and less breathlessness), whereas WHM and other hyperventilation techniques practice HYPOCAPNIC breath holds (blowing off as much CO2 as possible, causing vasoconstriction, bronchoconstriction, less blood and oxygen delivery, and a decrease in overall resilience for an already compromised population). It's quite a bit to explain in a simple comment, Diana. Please let me know if this is helpful or not. I sure hope it helps to create some clarity for you. Please let me know if you have any follow-up questions. Have a great weekend, and thank you for stopping by and supporting the channel.

@@BELightTT Thank you for clarifying all of this. I hope that search engines pick your response up - there is very little information out there that identifies a need to tailor therapeutic breathing techniques to women's unique needs, and I think that most female authors are ignorant of these nuances. Women are more often seeking assistance with chronic medical issues on account of being hormonally complex and sensitive to changes in the environment and are often desperate for something to bring them back into balance, but it seems that theses very individuals are often poor candidates for the miracle pill therapies that are highly effective for males.

@@dianacloudsupernova8331 I could not agree more!! As I head into my 5th decade, believe me, this is a topic very close to my heart as well. I am slowly collecting information and would like to create more programming for women in the near future. The research is VERY SLOWLY starting to consider a woman's unique physiological needs more and more...but it's SLOW! And there are practitioners who are trying to teach from this lens, but they are FEW. In the meantime, there is a lot of UNlearning that needs to happen as the female biology comes to the forefront of the conversation. Thank you for your feedback on this. Hearing this type of response makes me more passionate about heading in that direction. Many thanks to you! Stay well.

I live in the suburbs and walk outside. Before I get to an intersection where there are cars, I take a deep breath in and slowly exhale over like a 30 to 40 sec span until I am clear of the cars and their fumes. I don’t want that junk in my lungs!
@BELightTT
@BELightTT Год назад
@BenMJay super smart strategies. I imagine in the suburbs, the air pollution is not quite as bad as in the city, but that's still a smart move. Thanks for sharing! And how does that make you feel? A 30-40 second exhale is not easy for everyone to achieve. Do you do it just through your nose, or through pursed lips? I would imagine it would feel pretty calming to the nervous system as well, no? I tend to just try to hold my breath whenever I am around too many cars and their exhaust, but I definitely also try to limit my inhales and elongate my exhales. 🙌
@BenMJay
@BenMJay Год назад
@@BELightTT It is hard for me to tell if I feel different after a long exhale. I havent thought to think how I it makes me feel. However, today was a sunny day, and I did notice while walking under trees, my inhales were easier, deeper. And it felt cooler, crisper. I never really noticed that before. I think the shade made the air lighter, and I could inhale it easier. The 30 second exhale isnt difficult for me. I used to do Tai Chi. It helped me a lot with my anxiety, and taught me how to link the movements with breath. I was amazed how after practice I could really extend exhales quite long. Hey now that I think about it, it would be very cool if I could elongate my inhales too! Is that even possible? My inhales are a lot shorter. Oh you asked how I exhale during long exhales, the longer ones I exhale like you said, kinda small lipped. Thx for the insight, I been trying to be more conscience of my breathing, especially during my daily walk.
@BenMJay
@BenMJay Год назад
Hi Taura! Update. I tested my exhale on my walk today and the most I could do was 22 seconds. So, you were right. I overshot my estimate. It felt like the walking motion was expelling more air with each step than I would like. Oh also, RU-vid recommended me a video on you playing the piano. That’s great! Piano is my fav. When I tell Alexa to play me music it is always either Dean Martin Radio or Solo classical piano on Pandora. Have a good weekend.
@BELightTT
@BELightTT Год назад
@@BenMJay Sounds like your breath awareness is quite developed, actually!🙌Yes, of course it's possible to extend your inhales as well, but the question is, do you really need to? Remember, the goal is not to OVER-breathe. You ideally would like to match your breathing to your metabolic needs. And a pleasant walk underneath the trees does not sound like an activity that requires a lot of breathing.😉What style of Tai Chi did you used to practice? I LOVE Tai Chi and Qi Gong!💖Regular practice definitely does wonders to improve the breath-movement connection. I totally agree. And lastly, also remember, that your exhale IS the relaxation part of your breath cycle, as the vagus nerve gets stimulated. It would be quite natural to feel more relaxed after an extended exhale. Nice job!😊
@BELightTT
@BELightTT Год назад
@@BenMJay Aw, yea, I notice that myself as well. When I'm walking, the force from each step tends to push out air more quickly than I would always like. That's ok. I would go with it. That is your body's natural rhythm. 22 seconds is also quite impressive. I know when I practice humming exhales, for example, 20 seconds is my average length as well. Through pursed lips, at rest, without sound, I can go longer; but while walking, it's totally unnecessary. You're doing great!😃Oh, cool, about the piano music! I love solo piano. Last year, when I started my RU-vid channel, I was just throwing all kinds of stuff up on my channel, in order to keep the videos being released regularly😂. I haven't had much time to record any of my newer compositions lately, but I hope to get back to it this winter. Do you play an instrument as well? Also, thanks for the update! Love hearing about the details of your breathing.🙏
