this video was NOT supposed to come out today it was supposed to be “odd and unremarkable places in Majoras Mask” I’m so sorry support me on patreon www.patreon.com/any_austin
I think you should have done everyone in their late-game form because in Minecraft there is an achievement to stay underwater for 3 in-game days so 1 hour so technically steve is infinite because of the potions of water breathing
Minecraft was the console remake not the original game, the time changes depending on what difficulty you're on, and if regen gamerule is on, he wasn't at max gapple health or saturation, and you didn't try with potions or enchantments
I think such “time” speed differences can be better explained by them not being based on Earth, or on an Earth with a very different rotational speed, rather than time being faster or slower. Otherwise they are all walking and running increeeeeedibly slowly, and they swing their weapons through treacle.
If link was allowed upgrades Steve should have been, too. He could survive literally forever if you used a conduit or a regen beacon and protection armor
@@maxe624 While I do agree that Link had performance enhancers I don’t think Steve would be valid to use the conduit or water breathing potions; however, enchantments and/or the turtle helmet should’ve been used, and it should have been on easy mode since it takes longer to die by drowning. Otherwise Link should have just drowned with the starting 3 hearts.
Conduit/water breathing potions are like equivalent to the zora tunic, they don't count. but yeah if Link can have his extra hearts then steve should at least be able to use respiration helmet
When I was a little kid in 1996 or 1997, my older brother's friend named Kyle came over once and used to force me to watch him drown Mario in the lake outside the castle over and over and over because it got a huge reaction out of me and I was so sad I'd start crying and yelling at him to stop. I'm mostly over it at this point in my life, but every once in a while I think of Kyle doing that to me and feel an incredible anger towards the guy who would torture a six year old kid like that. Also I can't watch this video because I'm afraid of Mario drowning still.
In OoT, there is a Great Fairy that will make Link’s hearts twice as good, signified by a boarder on the hearts. Do the better hearts grant longer drownability?
The timer in hot areas works exactly the same way, and it scales with increments of less than quarter hearts which is interesting since the HUD doesn't even show those. In fact if your health is low enough (about 1/16 of a heart iirc) then the calculation fails and you just have infinite time
@@TBrizzle01 It's kind of important if you play the randomiser, because you very narrowly have enough time to get around to all the item checks as child in Death Mountain Crater with 3 hearts, like less than 2 seconds to spare if you use the grotto under the bombable rock to reset the timer in between
"Where are the bubbles coming from?" I started imagining Mario ripping ass underwater while swimming Then suddenly I was horrified to see Gordon Ramsay staring into my soul from behind Austin
Needed to have Banjo from Tooie. You get an air upgraded to double your oxygen capacity, and after losing all of your oxygen the game then proceeds to drain your health instead of instant killing you, like what happens in Minecraft. Throwing in maximum health upgrades, and Banjo could start competing against max hearts Link. Probably still wouldn't beat him, but it'd at least be a competition.
On behalf of the many of us who have been watching for around 8 years, welcome :) I’m glad to see new people enjoying his vids. Also- you like glitches? If so, check out his Eggbusters vids. I recommend starting with the first Twilight Princess video.
I think a fair comparison between Adult Link and Young Link's breathing/heart count conundrum would be to have Young Link's at the minimum three hearts from the start of the game, to Adult Link's full (20) hearts at the end of the game.
If we're allowing different games then Mario wins by his super mario entries. Can stay under water near infinitely. (500s if you take level clock into account).
Don't know if this is a potential series or is just a genre of future video, but I did indeed love this and would love more like it. Thanks for the vibes.
The interesting thing about Link is that in OOT, the time he can hold his breath for is dependent on how many hearts he has when he goes underwater. The max 20 hearts allows him to hold his breath for around 2 minutes and 30 seconds if I remember correctly. A single quarter heart is 2 seconds. Edit: Nevermind, you discovered that on your own during the video. Nice catch, it's cool you noticed.
For anyone reading these comments who is confused. Although the health bar divides hearts into 4ths, internally one heart represents 16 hit points. Every 2 hit points equates to 1 second on the drown timer, this is also true for the timer you get in hot places like death mountain crater. If you lower your health just 1 hit point (1/16 of a heart) the timer will be set to 0 seconds which will make it so it doesn't even start. All direct damage in the game deals more the 1 hit point, however, it is possible to lower your health to 1 point using slip damage from being set on fire or frozen. A common use for this glitch is to purposefully get burned by the Fire Keese in the first room of Fire Temple to be able to walk around the dungeon without Goron tunic.
If link on OoT has the white border hearts, gets down to a quarter heart, then get tapped by a keese, it'll put him at 1/8 of a heart. This causes a bit of a miscalculation on the part of the drown timer. It will literally cause a link with gills. His timer will become absolutely infinite.
Now this is some hard science right here. But I digress. Guybrush Threepwood is clearly the winner when it comes to holding one's breath. Unless you count characters that can just survives infedefinitely underwater like the Kongs
you always have the best video concepts, i like how its new ways of looking at things that bring out refreshing details in these games we all know everything about
I have a request. Hold a contest for every drownable Link from all the games you can grasp. I know for a fact Link in Skyward Sword can hold his breath for about 3 minutes, plus a buffer for his hearts dropping. ... Yes, I *have* timed it before--
Duuude Austin. I used to watch your videos so many years ago when you did egg busters. I would binge them and even watch them repeatedly. You popped up on my suggested and I’m so glad it did. Nice to see you’re still doing stuff!
Steve can stay underwater as long as he wants too, if he's in peaceful mode and lucky enough to drown slow (at least on bedrock, I haven't tried in Java)
When I saw the Banjo drowning animation, I had a strong memory that when he rises up during the animation, if he reaches the surface he can actually still get air and recover. I'm not totally surely if this is a feature in BK or some other similar game I'm misremembering from, but if so that means his time is a little longer, since he hasn't actually died from drowning until the animation ends. One thing I'm a bit more sure of which doesn't actual extend time but is nonetheless impressive is that Mario in SM64 can breath through his feet and not lose oxygen even if his head is completely submerged.
Out of the many years I've played and replayed Ocarina of Time, I never thought the drowning timer was related to the amount of hearts you have. I honestly thought it was random.
I think if you know where to go and how to navigate fast, you can actually beat the game without the read and blue tunic. (Death mountain timer is the same as the drowning timer)
In Sonic's defense, he should consume energy by the GIGAWATTS to run as fast as he did for as long as he can, especially oxygen, so it honestly makes sense why he's incapable of holding his breath for long. Even humans can possibly last for a whole minute while holding their breath and running at top speed, but Sonic is stuck at a mere 30 seconds, even while resting, due to his lightning fast metabolism.
dude i used to love your zelda eggbuster videos. i've been subscribed for years but your past uploads havent shown up on my home page. theyve been reappearing lately. glad the youtube algorithm is back on your side. godspeed austin
Excellent video. Quick note, in Banjo nuts and bolts, when banjo dies, kazooie slaps him back awake. Including drowning, which technically means nuts and bolt’s banjo has infinite air in his lungs but just goes unconscious for no reason after a while in water.
I loved your "odd places in OoT" video but wasn't sure if lightning would strike twice for me. This was enjoyable as well though, so I think you've earned a sub.
Yeah the time Link can stay underwater without the Zora Tunic is tied to how many hearts he has. Same goes for how long he can stay in hot places, like Death Crater, without wearing his Goron Tunic. There's no difference between adult and kid Link, same rule applies.
idk if I've seen any of your videos before this one, but regardless this was fucking hilarious, man. love your sense of humor and joke delivery. you've got yourself a new subscriber.
An old one, but Guybrush Threepwood of the monkey island series can hold his breath for 10 whole minutes. And if you actually time it out, he does actually die in game from it at the 10 minute mark.
The timer for link can be delayed further by which scale he has, that is if you can get underneath something at the bottom of his dive. So ideally, I think, max hearts (with enhanced defense maybe ?) no iron boots, golden scale, dive as deep as he can in water temple and get underneath a platform for the most accurate measurement. Or maybe a platform just under the surface of the water is better instead of at the bottom of the dive. Unsure!
I'm going to comment before finishing the video so may look like QUITE the FOOL, but the minimum time to drown Link is 2 seconds at a quarter of a heart of damage.
I just discovered you and it's like Nakey Jakey and TheReportOfTheWeek Reviewbrah had a child, but you bring something so much fresher to the RU-vid table, I love it. Keep it up man.
Logically to move as fast as he does sonic probably needs a ton of oxygen. So he probably doesn't do well having to stop breathing. To try and be fair. Steve has no excuse, he goes spelunking and cave diving regularly, he should be better at oxygen management .
I appreciate you pronouncing "Mario" in so many different ways Also, the bubbles coming off him come from "nucleation points". Dissolved carbon dioxide can collect there and rise up in the form of bubbles. This implies that all water in Mario 64 is carbonated
I just immediately thought of how in Quest for Glory Devon can sprint himself to death. How many games let you sprint yourself to death outside of scripted events?
I appreciate that in the intro Austin specifically says "Mahrio from Super Mayrio 64" because I know that's a deliberate choice to annoy both crowds, and I appreciate that.
oot Link can hold his breath longer the more hearts he has. each quarter heart is 2 seconds so at 20 hearts he holds his breath for 2m40s. if he has 20 heart containers but 1 quarter heart remaining, he'll have 2 seconds. fire damage applies dmg in 8ths, so if you take fire dmg at 3/4ths of a heart and extinguish yourself, you'll have 1/16th of a heart and the timer won't start at all and you can breathe underwater forever or maybe it's some kind of underflow glitch where the timer will countdown from whatever the biggest number the n64 can process or whatever (but basically forever). maybe you can run an experiment to see if that's the case haha same applies for overheating in death mountain. learned this in the looygi brothers video "cool things in oot part 6" great series, not your average "did you know" series
The programmers made an error when rounding the numbers, they coded the timer to round down your hearts instead of rounding up. So when Link have 3/16th of a heart they made it so it rounds down to 2/16th of a heart which gives you 1 second on the timer. But if you have 1/16th of a heart it still rounds down that number to 0/16th hearts, so the timer just never starts since you're considered dead according to the timer programming, but you're still alive according to your heart value. And since you're "dead" the timer just never starts.
@@MrRafaeltrainer sm64 mario could also collect coins to replenish his air meter meaning he could survive for almost the whole duration of a 100 coin star
Steve can actually use a respiration 3 helmet and then, if he has enough food, he can hold his breath for as long as he has food, so in my books, he's a winner
Mario beats the shit out of link imo. Links got 1 million magic hearts circulating his blood for all eternity and marios doin over a minute with just that one grindset ticker of his
I like this video and want more like this. sidenote, my guess was link, but the technical reasoning was interesting. I knew it was going to be because of the hearts.
