I’m a translator and linguist and knew what “behind the eight ball” meant, but had never heard it used (maybe in a movie when I was little that I don’t remember). Two days ago I was on the phone with my mom and she used it and I got really excited. 😂

The fifth amendment says that you don't have to answer a question in court if your answer might also incriminate yourself. So plead the fifth often leaves the impression that you were doing things you shouldn't have been doing.

"Knock on wood" comes from Celt mythology when a woodsman, when he was getting ready to cut down a tree, would knock on it to notify the spirit within and allow it to escape before the tree was cut down. If not, the spirit would haunt you. "The whole nine yards", while from the 1800s, it gained popularity in the US in WWII because a full belt of belt of ammo was 9 yards.

John Hancock was not he first person to "Sign the Constitution" (as she says). He was the first to sign the Declaration of Independence. They didn't mention that Freshman/Sophomore/Junior/Senior titles also apply to High School, in addition to University/College. To broil is to cook with radiant heat, usually applied to the food from above; where I think we would use 'grill' if the heat source were below the food. Also, 'broil' can be used figuratively, where we can say that it's "broiling outside" on a hot sunny day.

And his signature was particularly prominent on the document, since he signed bigger than everyone else.

To grill to Americans is to use a separate unit outdoors on your patio, backyard or in a public or private park. You can use, propane gas, wood or charcoal bricks to cook and your food absorbs the flavors of the latter two.

Broil: Cook (meat or fish) by exposure to direct, intense radiant heat. Example "he broiled a wedge of sea bass". Carl's Jr is the chain-operated (Corporate Owned) Fast food Version that makes a decent one, BUT!!!! I highly recommend finding a Mom & Pop (independently owned) Burger Shop/Restaurant in The US that makes Char-Broiled Hamburgers!!! Ask Older Locals where you might find one a good one. You will thank Me! Shredded Lettuce, Secret Sauce (Thousand Island), and a rusty awning from around 1958 to 1978 covering the patio are all good signs!!!!

In WW2 pilots had a 9-yard (Roughly 3 meters) long chain of bullets per gun. I gave them all I had, I gave them the whole 9 yards. The whole nine yards can be used in a couple of ways. Such as, I gave it all I had to give, example: Your last effort, every last penny OR such as, I want it all, example: all the toppings, The hardest level, we didn't stop until we got to the top of the mountain.

"University" and "College" in the US are distinguished by the size of the institution and the curriculum provided. College is typically specialized or has a smaller selection of academic courses. A university has a wider selection of subjects/departments available for obtaining a diploma upon graduation. The options could be medical, arts and literature, social services, law, applied sciences, etc.

I have heard different reasons why John Hancock's Signature is so large on the Declaration of Independence. The simplest seems to be true to me. He simply went first not realizing how many others were going to eventually sign it ( I believe it was signed over multiple days by various state reps who traveled by horse). This bears out to me because you can see the signatures getting progressively smaller. The simple fact that he signed first & largest on such an important document makes it easy to see how his name became slang.

John Hancock signed his name on the declaration on Independence extremely large, He wanted to be sure King George could see it :-) And Definitely still "knock on wood" when needed.

The 5th Amendment makes it illegal for a court to make you testify against yourself, nor can invoking the 5th Amendment be used as evidence of guilt ( The Right to not self-incriminate) So it is slang for No Comment. In civil trial invoking the fifth can be submitted as evidence. I'm not a lawyer, but from what I've learned this seems to be true.

The courts have to prove in court that you are guilty, "Anything you say can be held against you in a court of law" So you may put your self in jail if you say the wrong thing. Police may try to twist your words or promise you something. That's why it's wise to just keep your mouth shut.
@rightlyso8507

You had gotten an extraordinarily large amount of these correct. "John Hancock" meant a signature. However, in Hancock's case, he signed the Declaration of Independence with an extraordinarily large signature - "so that John Bull (the King) won't need his eyeglasses to read it" - as Hancock said. For "knock on wood", I just knock on my head, instead of searching out a piece of wood. "Taking the Fifth" literally could play out in court. It involves not testifying, answering a question, that might criminally incriminate yourself.
@wikkedspindl
@wikkedspindl 2 месяца назад
Another way of saying more bang for your buck is more bound for the pound. Lol! Plead the fifth is to avoid self incrimination, to not make things worse by talking. If you were in court you could: 1. Talk and possibly make things worse on yourself 2. Lie and make things worse when you are caught 3. Plead the fifth and have people suspicious but can't really call you out on it since your not lying or throwing yourself under the bus.
@cbicnone2228
@cbicnone2228 2 месяца назад
"I plead the fifth" is saying, you will not answer any questions unless your lawyer is present. The police will try and ask you questions which you don't have to answer. Court language is complicated and should not be tried to understood. That is why you need a lawyer to represent you. Not all police are good.
