~5th Alarm~
Date: Halloween 2020
Location: Atlantic Avenue at Autumn Avenue, Brooklyn.
Around 7:30 in the morning an alarm went out in Brooklyn for Box 1857 at 3432 Atlantic Avenue, the 911 caller reported a fire in a school bus / auto repair building. Engine 236 arrived first, observed smoke pushing from the commercial structure, and transmitted a 10-75 letting units and dispatch know there was a working fire. The Chief of the 15th Division requested a HazMat response when the CIDS (Critical Information Dispatch System) showed that Oxygen tanks and other volatile substances were stored in the structure. The fire was aggressive and two hours into the operation Chief of Department Sudnik was commanding a 5th Alarm assignment. Finally after three hours the fire was placed Under Control.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, graduated from PRATT INSTITUTUE (DeKalb Ave) in 1960. I have been up and down Atlantic Aveenue a hundred times. I watched FDNY knock down a fire across the street from my home on Bay 20th Street in 1950. They are the best!!

There's two signature pieces of equipment that also be considered for fire units in Germany: 1. The mobile Command post; 2. The RAC unit! All the best, J.K.

Whenever I'm watching one of those videos showing the FDNY responding, it's the same thing I notice: it's the pronounciation of "water"! Sounds a bit like "wode" with the "r" clipped at the end. Is that some kind of a local dialect? Thanks!

I think the brave actions of the fire brigade are wonderful. However, even if such a large amount of water is discharged, the spread of fire cannot be prevented. Because it's an oil fire. Is it possible to extinguish a fire more safely and in a shorter time by using a chemical fire engine or a chemical fire extinguishing agent? As a concrete example, did you not extinguish the fire even if you sprinkled water on the car that spread the fire?

Bonjour, je suis d'accord avec vous, pourquoi ne pas utiliser de la mousse carbonique, ou autre produit, essayez d'éteindre un feu de friteuse avec de l'eau, vous serez désagrément surpris du résultat.

Three hours to bring it under control, is what your description says. How long was it before it was declared out?
@citystreets7871

A few units remained on scene in case there were any "hot spots" but all the fire was out after the three hours.

Looking at these videos, it always amazes me that no one apparently tries to clear the surroundings of the burning structures from parked cars, to facilitate the work of the rescuers, and this happens both in residential neighborhoods and in commercial or industrial areas. Is it so difficult to track owners to move cars or remove them with tow trucks?
@hihfty
@hihfty 4 года назад
Its impossible to find vehicle owners when a fire breaks out. Everything happens so fast and honestly its easier to just leave the cars in place. the last thing you want is a bunch of morons trying to clear the street getting in the way of units comeing into the scene.
@fabrizioselvatici7275
@fabrizioselvatici7275 4 года назад
@@hihfty Sorry, after watching many videos like this, where the fire took a long time to become truly unapproachable, I still do not understand why you never see anyone trying to drive away parked cars, which are also potential sources of fire spread.
@hihfty
@hihfty 4 года назад
Fabrizio Selvatici As someone who works in a city by the time a fire starts and the call is made those streets are totally packed within 3-4 minutes. City parking is a disaster and people park where ever they can and then walk blocks away to where they need to be. It’s literally unfathomable and impossible to clear cars out. Even with everyone sitting in there cars when a fire starts they would never all make it out. But cars lining the streets are just a way of life. You don’t even notice them anymore. Just simply work around them.

31:13 Talk about a Mt. Rushmore of crusty old jakes! There's more "been there, done that, seen it all" standing there than the combined experience of most other departments. What I'd give to sit in a room with those men and just listen.

Those flames are very stubborn and they take two hoses to be extinguished. The New York Bravest are always hard at work. I did not know that the cherry picker can be lowered as well to rise. Ladder 107 was not too far from my hometown which is East New York. I grew up there 68 years ago. My fire companies were Engine 290 and Ladder 103. I bet that it is another cockloft fire.

@@MESSier1188 as a firefighter for two decades, I have to disagree. This is in part a Class B and Class A fire. Foaming in through that garage door would likely have made a big difference, as the water wasn’t even making those flames flinch.
