I'd NEVER heard of him till I found this segment whilst nostagically browsing Buffy's music. She and the fundamental principles she represents will remain firmly seared in my memories and heart all my life. Which is more than can be said of the Loser she firmly smacked down in this segment. I have listened to her music starting back in the 60’s, and always loved her music. You notice in this interview she refers to herself as a native North American, not Canadian or American.

I am indigenous from canada and reflect the same feelings that many feel about bluffy but......everything she said here is amazingly accurate and intelligent. I dont know if everyone is aware but in 1969, trudeau and chretian tried to abolish native rights in canada inthe same way. I applaud bluffy for her words and activism for native rights and condemn her for lying to ro the same people. We should be celebrating those indigenous people who have and do fight for our rights.

Needless to say, this guy's career was a one-termer and this bill went nowhere.

Treaties have not, to this date, been signed; so, technically all American lands belong to the Indigenous Peoples respectfully. It is uncomfortable with Cunningham offering deeds which the American government does not have the rights to give away.

The government didn't keep any treaties anyway. They were all broken. How can you also say that there's only one class of people in this country, when Native Americans have had so many of their traditional lands stolen? And how can you especially say that the Native Americans have a "valuable culture to add to this country," when for a hundred years and more, their culture and religious traditions were all but snuffed out by a white dominant race who broke families apart by sending the adults to reservations and children to schools where they were forbidden to practice their customs and traditions? If you go on reservations today and see the number of Native Americans who are drunkards and drug addicts, it's plain they are not homogeneously mixing with other cultural, religious, and racial groups in this country.

She had a lot of nerve getting on that show given the fact she didn't have a drop of indigenous blood in her. As of the date of this post (11/2/2023), both David Hartman and Jack Cunningham are still alive. I wonder what they think of her now that she has been exposed as a fake?

She's quite correct in what she says.

This is why not to get involved in politics. A 7 minute debate of self interest which changes nothing. On one side it's claimed the bill would create equal rights, on the other to remove human rights. As Buffy says, if this is for the betterment of Native Americans, why would it not have been proposed by them long ago, and why were they not consulted by discussion over it? Then speaking over her also is the way of the dishonest, and given the history, we know who is right and speaks truth.

An interesting interview and points on all sides. I bet this comment may get some interesting or expected replies lol but they both have some valid points and one needs to ask some hard questions. One should ask themselves what is different besteen then and now? Do treaties make sense between small tribal groups and bands in a modern USA? To compare this with actual nations as Buffy does is a bit of a stretch as the native tribal groups were culturally rich, sure, but primitive by way of permanent civilization building overall and much was brought forward to these groups. Some groups used all the new technologies and advancements to continue to try to wipe one another out and others took different paths as noted through recent history. Treaties with other actual nations in today's world is like comparing apples with bananas when you look at it vs the native groups inside most to all of these nations. Now come forward by hundreds of years and do they make sense as the USA has solififed itself coast to coast and there is no going back in that sense. To say anyone is "never conquored" in that sense is comical by definition as who's postage, currency, and infrastructure is used day to day. If these things are claimed and then are to be believed then shouldn't us citizens ask for borders to be set up and check points? No a that would be ridiculous and most groups wouldn't last a few days at best if ever done. In looking at a lot of the history on this there may be a way forward for all but there definitely needs to be things set solidly in place. As what Buffy talked about with the smoke screening side of things must not happen if or when done. What the congressman talked about with taking all reserve lands and moving them into municipalities and towns isnt a bad idea if done right. This would be a massive game changer for the groups as their lands will now carry the same values as neighboring communities and they can do more building up, selling, buying, and taxing under the same laws and take the influx of money and people to continue to build their communities and culture in their regional areas. This would also see most likely a one time payment to all registered Indians for ending the racist programs of status cards and two tiered systems. These funds, that many in these communities never see, would not go through tribal councils and such as that has proven in many cases to be problematic due to the corruption of people and power and would go directly to the person. Again there is a lot more to this but in a modern world and even prior the tribal groups and governments had and have options. Some elect to keep the path from history and live there while others look at what a future looks like for them, their culture, and generations to come. If done right can and would build up these communities a lot more, possibly bring the country together more, and give all Americans the same access and ability to a prosperous future and not continue to suppress or live in the past, if thay makes sense. Somethings the American people should be discussing for sure as the American Indians have benefited and continues to from the USA being as it is, by comparison and maybe it's time to not have two tiered systems? Or if so, then be separate from the system one claims to be and push forward. Here's to better days ahead, peace for all, and for all people to be treated fairly and equal as humans.

I think it's funny that many people get all righteous and offended that Buffy Saint Marie pretended she was an Indian. Like, so what? Who exactly was harmed by this? No one, that's who. If she had been an Indian, they would have LOVED everything she did, which was to promote an Indian image of talent and success and shine a spotlight on Indian issues (like in the above video). It's as though they feel all her actions and activism are negated simply by her not being an Indian. Have you ever heard anything so absurd?
