The other thing that can help is one of those manual impact drivers. Not the electric or pneumatic kind, the kind you hit with a hand hammer. They can really be a lifesaver on tight screws.

Try using a JIS screwdriver on those screws and you're a lot less likely to strip the heads. The Japanese bikes use JIS (Japan Industrial Standard) heads, which are like Phillips, but slightly different. Using a Phillips on a JIS head screw can strip it pretty easily.

I own 2 vstar 1100s the starter clutch isn’t that hard to change if you take your time and buy a service manual. You will probably have to buy a couple of tools. The first one I did took me 8hrs the second one took 5hrs and the parts cost less than $300 including all the seals gaskets and the oil to refill the bike. While you have the side cover off it’s also a perfect time to preventatively replace the shift shaft seal.

You see a beat-up old wing, I see a blank canvas with lots of potentials. I'd love to have one like that to go with my Yamaha Royal Star tour deluxe. It would give the Yamaha a break from doing all the miles I do going on trips with it during the summer. I would put about 3 to 4 grand tops in her starting with a paint job, new stereo and speakers, maybe some LED lighting, and I could DIY fix the cruise control and other small issues. And since I have a good running, excellent condition touring cruiser already, I could take my time and gradually fix it up to what I'd want. Then enjoy the heck out of it riding all up and down the eastern seaboard and Appalachian mountain range.

Stripped screws probably used a Phillips head, rather than a jis head. Looks the same, Phillips were designed for Cadillac because workers were over tightening screws and destroying expensive parts. Phillips are designed to back out when too much torque is used. Easy to replace a .01 cent screw rather than a $50-500 part. Jis looks so much the same, but I was gifted one in the ‘80’s for use on my Honda Twinstar, and never stripped a screw on it. Lost the screwdriver, now I ride a Harley! Great bike, rode a Voyager when new. Great work you guys do to further people’s love of motorcycles. Keep up the good work!

I've had 2 of these bikes and ridden them across the country. Great bikes. The missing things on the top of the trunk, were speakers. Cruise doesn't work because your speedometer isn't working, and the battery light being on is probably because someone didn't put the battery acid level sensor in when they replaced the sensor. These are inline 4 1200cc engines with hydraulic adjusted valves. Never needs valve adjustments. There were great bikes, its a shame that Kawasaki didn't update them with fuel injection and such and keep producing them. Rob

Nice new bike man! Especially for $700! Those mounting holes on the trunk lid are for rear speakers. You got SO LUCKY to not have to clean those carbs!! The car radio install was classic!! LOL!!! Cruise control may need the speed input to work...Just sayin'.... And yes, it is an inline-4...Unfortunately it's not a Voyager 1300 which had the inline 6 engine!! Those sound awesome! Especially when straight-piped :-) That V-Star 1100 with the starter clutch problem - You want to see a starter clutch problem, buy a 1981-1983 Yamaha XV920 Virago. Those starters sound like a box of rocks - on a GOOD day. The repair is just as challenging, and never lasts for long. 920 Viragos are best used as art pieces or boat anchors

I had that same bike when I lived in Las Vegas, had the computer dash, had to carry a towel around all the time so the dash didn't go blank on me. I flipped it and made more profit on it than I bought it for.

If you fix the speedo the cruise control would probably work it functions off from what the speedo is reading

Thank You for speaking the truth about custom paint. YOU may love it but next owner probably won't and doesn't want to pay for it. It's the one mod that usually kills any value and makes bike hard or impossible to sell. Sorry painters!

i have seen a few i liked on GW's but not often. my favorite is the sport bikes that are missing the fairing and being passed off as a naked bike. im like no, you bought something you couldnt afford to take care of and wrecked it.

I wonder if the speedometer needs to be operational for the cruise to work? These Kawasaki Voyagers were competitors with the GoldWing for a while, but Honda kept with it and owns the category for the most part now. I forgot about the Suzuki Cavalcade and the Yamaha Venture Royale....the 80's were interesting times in motorcycle history.

I just bought one of these for $500. The bracket on the back is for your rear speakers 🤣 and the battery light works off a sensor that goes inside the battery and is 100% probably just missing entirely off this bike.

I had a 1986 model, batteries at the time were not sealed and this indicator was connected to a sensor that triggered when the electrolyte level was low. There's an easy fix to bypass this sensor when switching to a sealed battery.

The trouble I have with buying an older bike is, if the previous owner used a pressure washer on the machine in the past, don’t even think about buying it… if not, first thing you do is start buying tires, battery, oil, filters, plugs, cleaning & rebuilding carbs, brake calipers, master cylinders,… the suspension is shot, it’s been neglected probably, and once you start replacing fork springs, fork seals, fork bushings, you have to do the rear shock or shocks to match so you don’t get into speed wobbles.. The brake fluid has probably never been changed, same with the clutch fluid, you have to do the air filter which on some bikes can take you hours like a GL 1800 Goldwing. That’s a five hour job. If it’s got high miles, it’s a good idea to do the steering head bearings, pull the driveshaft check the u joint, & lube the splines..change the final drive oil, adjust the valves. Older bikes have carburetors. The vacuum diaphragms in CV carburetors are getting impossible to find. They don’t last forever. It’s actually the reason I sold my Yamaha venture royale when it was 16 with 138,000 trouble free miles on it. it was good, but parts were getting old..electrical connections corrode, the ground strap at the frame corrodes, which puts stress on your alternator/stator.. you don’t want to be replacing that on the side of the road with your tool kit, especially if you have a older Goldwing. The seat foam starts to crumble, if someone used armor all on the seat in the past, the cover will split…check for rust in the steel gas tank, plastic fuel lines rubber fuel lines dry out n crack lots of expensive time consuming parts chasing.. when you’re all done, and you take it for a ride, you will feel how dated it is especially if you own a newer bike at the same time. You’ll ask yourself, what the hell did I do that for.. A lot of times you put $1500 in an older bike to make it worth $1500.. don’t even think of resurrecting an old Honda CB 350 twin. Those motors were junk/camshaft eaters. I was a Honda mechanic at a Honda dealership, Honda sent out a bulletin to all the service departments, telling them, stock seven camshafts for every 10 350s you sell..Some days I would do 3 cam replacements in one day.. I could do one in about two hours and get paid seven hours flat rate, if we had all the parts in stock…

Hello I have lupus SLE. I began noticing symptoms at the age of 27 if I remember correctly. I loved motorcycles as far back as I can remember. Summer of 1986 I got my first Yamaha MX80. From then until 2009. I've had the pleasure to own several dirt bikes mostly 2 strokes. And several street bikes. After a few years having lupus in my late 20's. On the interstate at riding home on my 2008 Heritage Softail. I suddenly lost my nerves. I was scared out of my mind. Afraid I was going to lay the bike down. Fast forward a few years. I was able to push myself to ride again. I still had to fight with my nerves at times. I stayed on city and back roads. Highways and interstates still scared me. I did finally start riding on Highways again. I had to tell myself I wasn't going to fail over in my mind and got better with time. Unit my ex wife and I started having problems. Down hill again I lost my nerves again. But a few years after the divorce. I started riding dirt bikes and trail riding without any problems. I'm now 45 years old and no bike. I wonder if there's a way to overcome my fears again. A more permanent solution to being afraid and scared. It always a fear of failing to my right side. No one or doctors have been able to help. I've also had chemotherapy several years ago. I don't understand how I was ok for almost three decades. And one night I lost it. I also had a major headache in Chattanooga. Right before we left to ride back home.

It's cuz it's actually a different bit that fits in those screws in Japan... Are screwdrivers don't fit guy strip them out because they don't hit it with the hammer first you got to hit it with a hammer to bang it in there and make sure it's tight before you try turning it out... One of my bikes all four of those rude are now fit for a tap ... So you just have to have a tapper and impact driver to bleed my brakes
