I conducted this experiment to see if I could produce electricity using the surplus heat from the wood stove.
1. Power Generation Module
I installed two thermoelectric elements that can be used stably even at a surface temperature of up to 250 degrees Celsius on the aluminum plate and connected them in series. And I installed computer CPU radiator and cooling fan for cooling. It is said that the greater the temperature difference between the both surface of the element, the more power they can produce.
2. Installation of Power Generation Module
I tried to generate power by installing the generation module vertically on the stove pipe. The module was brought into contact with the heat-absorbing surface at the appropriate height of the chimney that can use heat, and was fixed with a stainless steel band.
3. Power Generation Performance
I added firewood to the firebox and burned it to heat up the stove, and the chimney gradually became hot. The LED of the constant voltage module did not light up, but it was confirmed by the multimeter that electricity was produced. The voltage was lower than expected. I confirmed that the surface temperature of the stove pipe, which installed the first power module with a contact thermometer, was less than 100 degrees Celsius. So, the power generation module was installed at a lower level. The intensity of wood fires in the stove was increased and a cooling fan was operated to try to make a difference in temperature. Although it was possible to secure a voltage of up to 3.5 volts, it was far less than the target voltage of 6.5 volts for operating the system.
4. Conclusion, Improvements
There are two sides of the thermoelectric element, and the heating surface should absorb heat as much as possible within the endurance limit, and the surface to be cooled should be cooled as cold as possible. And the larger the temperature difference between the two sides, the higher the power is produced. It should be devised to maintain a large temperature difference between the thermoelectric elements.
Thank you for watching.
Always be safe and have a fun camping.
Stay safe.
Disclaimer: Using a stove in a confined space can be very dangerous. When using a stove, be sure to ventilate properly and be prepared for fire or other safety accidents. I am not responsible for any loss or injury caused by carelessness.

This fire pit is one of a few covered pits that is on the list ru-vid.comUgkxAU9pOCSV9Y5JprooHvfxTpOrt4hx8uRM of approved products for Disney Fort Wilderness. The product served its purpose well and provided excellent fires throughout the evening. We were able to open the door and do s'mores, but I had to be careful because the handle was a bit hot on occasions. Additionally, I wish they had replaced some of the standard nuts with lock nuts in some places. We lost the door handle after just a couple of days of usage. Not a deal breaker, just a recommendation. I still give it 5 stars.

you also need thermal grease on the hot side of the chip as well , for the same reason as the cold side of the chip

Nice mate, I like it. Ive built a similar thing for a kerosene lantern and an alcohol stove. I had to run the hot side at at least 130 degrees to really get power running. The kero lantern could do it, but I needed a heatsink on the hot side as well to really suck up the heat. Worked out very sweet, light, and a phone charger! One major bit of advice, you use tapped holes on both the heatsink and the mount. TEC’s, ive found, need to be clamped tight. Drill out the hot side, so your pulling the bolts down hard on the sinks. Full wrench hard. Crush them. I also didnt bolt directly to the heatsink, but a bar across it, with the heads out of the path of the heat. Dont want the bolts themselves to conduct heat from your hot to cold side. I also found I needed to ‘bootstrap’ the fans, like you do. I just put a 9v battery (PP3) clip on the fans, so I could clip on a 9V battery. Then another PP3 clip across the TEC’s and charger circuit. Light the lamp, warm it up, attach the battery to the fans. Once everything is up to temp, about 6v, swap the fans from the batterys clip to the TEC. You need a starter battery, but it really was the ‘eureka’ moment for the project. I’d also ditch the swanky LED display USB regulator. I used a very basic single cell LIPO charger with an 18650 holder. Super tolerant of wide input voltages, I tended to get between 4 and 6v, depending on ambient temp and load. And that charged 18650’s fine. Most of my load is geared to those cells, USB charger for my phone n tablet, torch, vape, tent lamps, all 18650’s. Keeps it efficient. To go from TEC voltage > 5v (with LEDs) > battery bank > 5v > usage , lots of loss. TEC voltage > 18650 > usage, really only the battery charging loss there. Unfortunately, I wasn't using high temp TEC’s. My project came from another that used 6 TEC’s as a chiller, and the best price I got was from a pack of 10. so I had 4 for free. What else can I do with these? The kero one still lives, but I killed the rest on an alcohol stove, finding how hard can I run these? About 8v, 6W out, running the fans from the TEC. Then there is that horrible ceramic plink sound, and everything goes to 0. the kero lamp gets about 4w useful power to the batteries. TL;DR Clamp your TEC's tight and isolated, and use direct battery charging. Your going to have a lantern or fire lit anyway, might as well use that heat!

Try wiring the fans to the input side of the 5v converter instead of the output. The fans will activate at less than 5v and will provide an ever increasing temprature differential for the peltier junctions. They will just work better and better untill they produce 6+v and the converter kicks in and charges your battery bank. Just an option.

@@marioschutrumpf9463 I think it's all the same principle. You can power it to make a cooler or you can use a thermal gradient to generate a current. Whatever the case, I think you could optimize it by using the draft of the fire to draw cold air through or over the cold side of your TEG. You're mainly running that thing in the cold, and the outside air is an endless supply of cool/cold air. Too bad I'm not an engineer, or I would either build one, myself, or know it's a dumb idea. Wait. I can go on thinking what I want, if I don't do or test anything. I can hold on to that idea as long as I please, now! Cool!

Great work! Keep it up! Now for those module you will want to use a boost converter or a sepic converter. They don't produce as high of a voltage then what they are rated for and also you can buy high temperature one that are rated for more power and 300c but they are expensive one. I made 2 of these as well using repurposed old one. They work to light up an LED but nothing fancy for charging they need a lot of heat. Cheers!

I think thermoelectric elements work better at higher temperature variables. Maybe you can ice the cold side to see if camping in the snow and moving the radiators outside with ice water being pumped into the tent through insulated tubing to a copper heat exchanger on top of the thermoelectric elements would be an improvement. But what would circulate the water? Another need for energy? What about thermally inducing the flow? I see a lot of people doing that to make hot water. No pump, just temperature variables moving the water. One other thing I was thinking, maybe the radiator you're using can be better. The ones you're using are for taking the high temp off processors, supper HOT! I think if you got your temp colder you're going to find better results. I really like the way you think! And you're mechanically inclined enough to do some really nice work!

Hi I had conducted a similar experiment many years ago with the first cells of Peltier and had had the same problem, in that case I used to cool a refrigerator but the physical principle is the same. Along the two sides ceramic you don't have to create thermal bridges that can heat the "cold" side. The system can be improved using a pressure cooker with a 1 cm thick bottom to work as a cold tank, you can use the steam output tube to pump cold water in the pot and with an additional tube withdraw hot water considering that hot water goes Always upwards the cold tube must send water directly to the bottom where you put the cells. I would put 4, 2 in series, 2 in parallel. An alternative can instead be to position the cells on a thicker floor not connected to the exhaust fumes but on the rear panel of the stove so as to keep the heat away and use a steel heat exchanger, of those that are installed On normal gas boilers. Given the efficiency of Peltier cells in their traditional operation I would use a Stirling generator for this application.

Ciao! 🇮🇪 Beh.. Ciao :)

If 2 TEM (Peltier) in series = 3.5 vDC, then 4 of them would be 7 vDC. Looks like 5 TEM in series is what you need. Also, the rising heat from the stove shouldn't be entering into cooling unit/radiator. Interesting experiment. It was fun to watch.

I know that it is probably too late to give input for your project, but I'll try anyways. Make it even more complicated using a stirling engine lower down on the stove to provide air movement and turn the heatsinks 90 degrees to use the stirling engine's fan vertical exhaust for the cooling. The computer fans you have mounted are 12v monsters and do not help much for the power they draw. The stirling engine will use the heat of the stove passively and not put a load on the power system. Unfortunately, it may require separating the peltier units from being vertically stacked for optimal heatsink cooling and placing them at the same level will mean you need 2 stirling engines. Those engines are mostly used for powering campstove fans in cabins, so not much work will likely be needed to fit them in to your project.

the peltier cell, what have you put it towards the heatsink of the cpu? the side that is hot or cold?

Great idea...few things can be added.. 1: Delta T is most important, If you keep colder side out of camping tent then it would increase its efficiency and power output, since hot environment inside camp is not allowing that Delta T.. 2: Add exhaust duct flapper to constant the heat in duct..Normally 150°C should be enough for a good TE to perform at max.. 3: Make Peltier contact flat to the duct. Most importantly, wish you all the best..will appreciate to see further follow up till success..😁

Thank you, sir, for posting your video. I hope you were able to solve the problem to getting the voltage to the target strength, and will be looking through your channel with great interest to find out about it.

Severel years ago I've did similair progect ,while electricity was off. It was interesting to see , how the 1W LED become more bright , while snow added to the cooling water. Also I can say , that Indigirka stove produce 60 W of electric power .

Я буду пробовать собирать такой же генератор, но только уже на жидком азоте, отбирая тепло у внешнего пространства.
