All in all very good painting, *whispering: except the grass*) 3. Sam (Awesome game and lore but the waves, while smooth and satisfying were, green. Furthermore the painting didn't have the calm, relaxing vibe coming from the sunlight) 4. Niko (Emerald shit waves) They all did a fantastic job and had fun doing it. That's what matters

There's a cooking channel called SORTEDfood that does a pass-it-on challenge that I think would be fun for VFX as well. Basically you start with a theme, and everyone takes turns working individually to add something and work towards the final goal. The difficult part is that you can't communicate with the other people, so you have to figure out what they've done, decide how you're going to contribute and try to get something done within a time limit.

@conorpm9009
@conorpm9009 2 года назад
Wren: He really captured the scene. Perhaps bordering on a cheat by essentially just painting on his tablet. But, he is the only one that managed to capture the key focal point of the light through and within the curl of the crashing wave, which really was the heart of the painting. Then Jordan: A practically photoreal depiction. But didn't manage to capture the light and wave action. Sam: Once again a fantastic scene with a lot of story, just not any real story about Bob's scene. But this time the story didn't capture the Bob Ross scene nearly as well. He basically threw in a bit of the source material; a shoreline and a couple of trees, and then went his own way. Niko: Sadly those waves just did not work. A tranquil shoreline scene became some image of an alien world or something. Cool, but not true to the source material.

My vote is for Jordan! He may not have gotten the large wave, but I think he nailed the churning and dark ocean with surface reflections that is my favorite part of this painting. Also I feel like doing renders of abstract or surreal landscapes could be really fun and challenging. Everyone could choose and artist and perhaps create a new piece inspired by them? I would argue that Sam deserves a deduction in the technical note as he did so much unrequested playstuff that he completely forgot to give sky and water the right coloring to hit the mood which should have been easy with his engine. His looked spectacular and lively (cause it was animated) but it did not hit that aspect of Bob's painting, which i would count as a fail. Wren got the coloring also wrong, but at least the "honest way" he wasn't that experienced with the brush and color selection and could not redo it unlimited times with better fits as he was alreaydy supposed to go on to another color and another detail. Only thing he outright failed on was the improvement of the palmtrees, but his shadows still looked more like the Ross thing than the "asset" ones from the other results. Copy/Paste fronds and all. Had Wren used the system as extensively as the others did their render engines before this challenge i'm sure his picture would have been even closer as he'd not have despaired so much over what to pick...

Yeah, I think Wren would have utterly demolished everyone else had he done a trial run with another painting first; once he found the tools he needed he crushed it. I was really surprised that the first step was so difficult tho, the line nd fill tools have been available in every paint program at least since MSpaint in the 90s...

What I think is really interesting in these challenges, is the different approaches Wren takes in all of them. He really thinks outside the box. In my book it‘s either Wren or Jordan. Wren was much closer to the original but Jordan really nailed it while doing it the way it was meant to be done. For me the win goes to Wren for his thinking out of the box, choosing a method that he isn’t familiar with and still almost nailing it.

I’m curious to see how a digital artist would recreate the brushes and effects Bob Ross used. Wet-on-wet just has that unique way of mixing colors and I feel that there HAS to be a plug-in or setup that recreates that feel.

Am learning digital painting after being a traditional artist for years. The biggest challenge is creating organic looking brushstrokes. Marginal success by editing brush settings to be more randomised, but yeah... nowhere near as good as the real thing. Have much respect for artists able to do it effectively. Some software also just better geared up for the painterly feel.

Wren: Out of all the others, he used brushes, layers, and paint in the manner that embodies how bob was creating the scene.
