Theo and Bee gave up their busy city lifestyles in 2014 to explore alternative living, and have lived in vans and boats since then without looking back! Along with their cat Ginjey Bear they have been driving around the world in their self converted Sprinter van. However, when the global pandemic hit they began converting their abandoned stone barn in Central Portugal to turn into a wonderful tiny stone cottage. Along the way, they have rescued a playful cat called Furrnando and have a wonderful flock of Chickens!

Great job Theo and nice to hear Bea is recovering well. Forest management is so important. One thing to consider, is not to remove all the burnt trees as their root systems are keeping the soil from sliding down the hill. I have experienced this myself and it was not pretty

Good morning, Professor! I don't know whether you've always been a philosopher, or whether that's Portugal's effect; anyhow, two lessons I learned from you today: 1) Insight adds so much to life; noticing the positive effect of fire on wood - the solid interior of a piece of charred wood. Beautiful! 2) Pointing out the lovely environment available in which to unstick an irritatingly stuck wheel. Thanks! _______________ Unphilosophically: What business is it of mine how fast you get things done? Doing things slowly reduces mistakes. Doing things slowly reduces stress. But doing things slowly brings out the busybodies. Enjoy, Theo!

Every day you work at it. Progress is made. We have 1.5 acres of land, far less than what you have. Clearing leaves from our property is always a challenge. We invested in a Stihl backpack model 600 blower and never looked back. It saves your back and arms. Finding ways to make life easier on the mountain saves so much time and work. We are big Stihl users. Seeing recent pictures of Bea looking so great is heartfelt. That sparkle is back in her eyes. Be Well ! Stay Safe! 🙏🙏 from Harriet, Jim and Yuki Richmond, Va.

Remember to let a couple of the dead trees stand for the beetles otherwise they will start to eat the fresh ones. You can cut some of the heights of and let them be 2-3 meters. We had that problem here with pine a couple of years ago. It is also possible to set up traps that lure them in if there is a lot if them. You are doing great renovating the land. There is a “thing” you can attach to a motor-saw that cuts the wood lengthwise, cheaper than a wood-mill. Best wishes to Bea, she made a good decision to have the surgery.

We mill all our own timber; its so useful. We took out 26 large Douglas fir and used it for floorboards; pergola and under our tiled roof (terracotta - we live in the south of france) This last week we have had to take out 6 large acacia which we are making post and rail for a field (acacia doesn't rot) . We are also planking two walnut trees which we will use to make a kitchen next year when it has seasoned. Beetle damage should be fine and always handy for cladding buildings (we have clad the side of a barn). The rest of course is always good for firewood. ps we cut ours in the winter when the sap is down and mill when cut. The planks and posts are then seasoned in a dry barn using strips of batten all the way down the planks in intervals as we stack so that they don't warp. It takes about 12 months but you can test with a meter to check.

Do it get the chainsaw mill. You can make useful wood with it. Even those skinny poles are useful for pole barns. The fire damage is like you said earlier it makes the wood harder and insect resistant.

Simple Living Alaska on RU-vid had pine, beetle kill trees, no burnt trees. They purchased a saw mill and use it to make boards for all their outbuilding construction. They recently moved and poured a slab and built a roof structure over the saw mill. On their old property they just kept it covered with tarps. They made a really nice wood shed on their old property from beetle kill trees.

My son had the the same problem as you, but here in Australia. They live on a property that is 120 acres and had beautiful pine and eucalypt forests on it. My son bought a transportable mill so he could cut his own timber. A few years ago there were fires everywhere, and all of his beautiful forest was burnt. Luckily not the house and milling machine. Like your pines, the inside was perfect, but he was told not to try cutting the wood with the mill as the charcoal on the outside of the trunks would wreck the saw blades. The trees are useless unless you wanted to take the bark off by hand.

@sovereigns1grace
@sovereigns1grace 6 месяцев назад
Beetle Kill: It depends on what kind of beetle killed your trees. Most bore through the bark and disrupt the cambium layer just under the bark. This is the layer that moves water/nutrients up the tree. The beetles don't go into the core of the tree. Therefore, the wood itself is fine to use. There are other pests that bore all through the tree. Find out which you have. Regarding milling: If you find a "portable mill" or use a milling attachment for a chainsaw you could mill from the road in the forest. Otherwise, most mills require a very good truly flat surface for set up since you want to make perfectly square & flat cuts. In that case, you would have to level out a piece of ground for the mill to rest upon.

Things take time. Opportunity to rethink, think through and save. Small to medium dead wood, cut, wood chip. Bigger and longer stumps can be used for firewood, fence supports, landscaping, beaver stream flow reduction, culvert wallsupport. Assist in building berms, ditches, swales, other water flow devices. Bridges, general fencing, wood for terracing zoning or contouring. Similar to stones or rocks. Start by thinning out the smaller ones first. Create room and replant with indigenous species. Avoid soil erosion,
@heleenquartel1145
@heleenquartel1145 6 месяцев назад
Hi Theo, how nice you could clear up that place. I saw how you installed the wheels. This is what I learned and maybe you already know it and did it also: The wheels of a trailer are secured to the drums or hub flange with wheel bolts. These wheel bolts must always be tightened crosswise and with a prescribed force. If the wheel bolts are not tightened crosswise, there is a chance that the rim will not be secured straight to the hub or drum, which can result in vibrations while driving. Tightening the wheel bolts crosswise means that the wheel nuts are tightened in order of the opposite wheel bolt. When tightening, the next adjacent wheel bolt is not tightened in the order, but the opposite one. This goes without saying with a four-hole rim, which is secured with four bolts.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing. It could be attractive as walls on a shed. Not sure if the beetles in Europe carry the same fungus that colors the wood, but even so it can be used. I was just checking, and they say it's fine if used within five years, while it's still sound.

Theo, milling your own wood is a really good idea. I think it’s worth the money because you have a huge forest of charred and dead trees to get rid of.
