Dr Chris Palmer, M.D. is a board-certified psychiatrist and assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He explains the important connection between nutrition, metabolism and mental health and his pioneering work using the ketogenic diet to successfully treat patients with various mental illnesses, including depression, anxiety, OCD, bipolar disorder, and even schizophrenia.
Dr. Palmer explains how the ketogenic diet is an evidenced-based treatment for epilepsy, puts us in an optimal metabolic state, and can offset the cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s. He gives a masterclass on the key roles of mitochondria in mental health, how certain conditions likely arise from mitochondrial dysfunction, and how low-carbohydrate diets increase mitochondrial turnover and function to improve mental health.
Dr. Palmer’s work stands as a revolutionary approach to mental health and disease that, given the prevalence of mental health challenges, should be of interest to people of all backgrounds and ages. More can be found in his new book "Brain Energy" that is sure to revolutionize the field of psychiatry and how we treat mental disorders.

I am shizophrenic with depression and anxiety issues. After 3 days of carnivore my depression, anxiety and inner anger is totally GONE! No joke! I couldnt believe it! After 1 week my negative symptoms of the shizophrenia is better. I was laying in bed most of the time, low energy, needed 2 hours in the morning to get awake. After 1 week of carnivore I had high energy, could get up immidetly out of bed and have such a good mood I did not have the last 2 years. After 1 week I reintroduced some plant food and i got very bad reactions that I found out comes from lectines. Got autoimmune reactions from them and feel like crap. Depression and anxiety came back. Now I am back on carnivore and feel better. Thank you very much for this interview!!! You both changed my life!!!

Love this! Psychotherapist and research scientist here, I have multiple sclerosis and I'm currently on the carnivore lifestyle as of October last year. Doing fantastic. My focus and "brain fog" from MS has really improved, muscle fatigue has reduced, and general pain has near subsided. Spasticity has also greatly improved, and I wake up most mornings forgetting that I have MS! What a blessing. I wasn't expecting any improvements at all since I was really declining and my neurologist expressed concern around me having progressive MS. I love the carnivore diet, and I'm convinced that it truly is helping me. Can't wait until you have a guest speaker with MS on your show. Thank you!

Within 2 months, he started acting normal. He started playing the piano like a protege. Wonderful conversation! Thank you, Dr. Palmer, for going against the grain to empower people who suffer from mental health issues. I tried SSRI’s (reluctantly) when my depression and anxiety escalated summer of 2023. I felt slow, dopey and apathetic. This was in August 2023. The side effects were awful. Then I heard you on a podcast. I went on a whole food ketogenic diet and the sun began to shine. I went off all anxiety/depression medication in early October 2023 with the support of my doctor. It’s only getting better and brighter! Thank you, Dr. Palmer for continuing to get the message of “food as medicine” to all of us. I am so grateful I found you! He used to be one of the most determined hard workers, now he's the laziest and wants to blame everyone for his incapabilities. I strongly believe that the bi-products of anti-nutrients (binding of minerals and turning them into stones) play a bigger role in these diseases. According to Sally Norton Oxalic acid is the biggest offender. I remember when I went to the ER for eating something i shouldn't have (a veggie or fruit or both can't remember). The PA or who ever it was told me my blood sugars were too high. It didn't make sense as I've never been diabetic. I felt like i had food stuck in my am esophagus causing a constant ingestion of what ever i ate without digestion. I was tired and felt like my esophagus was swollen.

I agree with you. Sad that the keto community (including Dr Eric Berg) promotes eating high oxalate foods. Also, docs that promote fiber don't know that those on keto and carnivore feed gut bacteria directly with the ketones in the bloodstream - no fiber needed. I loaded up on spinach, almond biscuits, almond butter when I went on keto. I have been slowly dumping the oxalates for the last few months on ketovore WOE (way of eating). No pain, no depression....

@@JosephQPublic it stays for gut and psychology syndrome diet and aims to heal the microbiome. Starts with bone broth and meats, and some people need to stay there, and then slowly introduced foods of all kinds. Natasha is a strong proponent of meat and cholesterol in a diet, and opines that a human being doesn't need anything else to thrive. But she also offers the possibility to eat traditional prepared food, like fermented milk or plants etc. She doesn't rule out fruits or honey, but is a strong opponent of sugar and junk food. I find carnivore a lot less time consuming. But it gave me an appreciation for the work of our grandmothers in the kitchen and their incredible knowledge about food. Most of it went out the window when we gave that responsibility and that power to big food cooperations for our own convenience.

Let me first say that this is so fascinating and a rabbit hole I’m extremely excited to be going down. What role do things like increased hormone injections and less than ideal diets for most of animals today have on either the carnivore or keto diets? Most people don’t have the money to spend on grass fed, non-hormonally charged animals so considering carbohydrates and processed meats are far less expensive to fill a plate with, what effects are to be expected if the diet now features far more hormonally charged and less naturally fed animals?

Huge elimination diet. Meat, salt, water. Cook in tallow preferably. Butter can be an issue for some since it’s made from milk so maybe don’t do butter for a bit either.

Really enjoyed this interview. One question I have is how past events that can lead people into depression etc can be healed by diet - eating meat does not change the past. Or are you saying that difficult experiences actually damage mitochondria in the brain to some extent or there are parts of the brain that help us cope with things if working optimally (but these are damaged), which diet can repair ?
@NoRegertsHere
@NoRegertsHere Год назад
1/ Optimal pathways for function in the brain with lower insulin and glucose. Brain runs many functions on ketones and body synthesises enough glycogen to run the parts of brain that only use sugar for energy, but no more. 2/ 60%? production Serotonin is in the gut. Improving gut health through an elimination diet like carnivore means nutrients are uptaken more completely

I do believe keto and carnivore can put the worst depression or bi polar illness in remission but im confused dr chaffee.... chris palmer promotes keto and getting into ketosis of 1.5 to 3.0 where you and ken berry and others seem to be more meat oriented.... macadamia nuts are classified as a good keto food but im not sure which one to do is it keto and making sure your in a state of high enough ketosis or is just eating meat how to fix these issues? I dont know which one to pick because homesteadhow kerry is a great guy who has had alot of help with carnivore but his wife jen couldnt do carnivore?

Vegetables have carbohydrates. Potatoes are a starchy food and contains higher carbohydrates than non starchy vegetables. Beans are also high in carbohydrates. A carnivore diet is no carbohydrates. No vegetables at all. No grains. No pasta. No processed junk. No sugar. No coffee. No tea. Just meat, water, and salt. A normal ketogenic diet is a low carb, high fat, moderate protein diet. A carnivore diet is high fat, protein, and no carbohydrate diet.

More fat you want proteine for muscle building not energy production. Cause I'am overweight I do the opposite I keep my fat lower or fast due my body is in ketosis it burns my fat away. This is just my view I'am no doctor. And you can't aspect that Anthony replies this is a big channel I guess they won't have time for this.

@@gingercameronfordcrouch7057 to maintain muscle mass as non or light exercising person 0,5g per pound of body weight is enough when fat intake is sufficient. Most carnivores achieve just be going carnivore 0,75 per pound of body weight. Just example at 150 pounds (70kg) you need 75g One steak (300g) has already 60g of proteine. So if you eat twice 300g x 2 you get to 120g. If you want to built muscle 1g per pound is enough when you are natural (no peds) That are 150g If you are on peds you need 1,5g per pound body weight but then you are a bodybuilder or pro athlete. Experiment with your body I as example often add non inflammable veggs - every body is slightly different so find out what works best for you
