be mindful when shopping for head gaskets of "compressed thickness" (aka thickness when it is bolted down) vs. uncompressed (aka out of the box). Cometic does offer several thickness options, and will custom make one.

Love that "crack" bit at the end!!! Been there with that before, usually after something is all put back together though never usually when the part is just sitting there, I run just as fast though and would have lost sleep till I could confirm it was "just" a hair.

Sheds much light on why I had valve-piston contact on the BP6D I built 2 yrs ago. .060" head shave, 10mm cams, +1 OS valves, stock 10:1 bottom end except rods and bearings. Engine lasted 200 miles before #4 piston exploded. Accidentally enabled VVT w/o reducing max lift. :doh: Ended up K swapping after that. Stellar content here, Greg. 👍

Best video you've done. I've just built vvt engine for itbs and it's nice to see someone else go in-depth. Just remember to calculate head gasket volume as your using a thicker gasket. As you might need to skim the head more then 40thou to get the same gain in compression due to the thicker gasket.
@elwindewitte

Oooh sweet! How has the build been? Still heavily considering going with a turbo or n/a with itb somewhere down the line.
@Nasonix2

I wonder if ARP Head bolts have higher torque values too than factory. It might crunch the head gasket a hair further than stock maybe . Maybe not. Is there a way to measure the head gasket size when it's fully torqued down? My thinking is maybe the gasket manufacturer advertised the thickness at stock head stud capacity. Either way it would probably be a hair at best. Oh and did anyone catch why Greg's engine is an interference engine now? Was it because of VVT? I don't think I remember him using oversized valves. Maybe he did, idk

Nice job! Loved it, Jafro takes all of us at school!! I have had problems with the squish area, I went for 0.27inch I destroyed the head making cracks all around the 2 flat faces. Taking off 1 mm I raised the b660 head c/r over 10.7. with 100octane fuel it has begun to detonate continiously. Then I reopened up. Keep on calculating and measuring that's all in those little details that makes the difference.

Excellent breakdown! On my NC, I measured actual clearance with the VVT at maximum advance by modifying a spare gear to remove the locking mechanism. Then I used a combination of feeler gauges and small sockets to hold the thing at maximum advance while claying the engine. By the way the "side" clearance measurement has a name, and that is "radial clearance", and it's usually safe to be slightly tighter than the other measurement. Usually. :D

Hey Greg, a lot of ppl here in Germany say that Miata engines start drinking oil after the head was lifted, because the cylinders are not round anymore. The block starts to deform a little wich is causing a bigger pistonring to cylinderwall gap wich results an oil consumption increase...? Have you ever heared 'baut that? Or experienced that sort of prob?

@TheCarPassionChannel

Shaving material off the head does not compensate for the thicker gasket. Yes the compresion ratio will be restored but the quench/squish whatever you want to call it is changed. The distance form the piston to the head at TDC is increased. The material must be taken from the deck surface. Not the head.
@Zesserie
@Zesserie 2 года назад
Does 9.0:1 to 10.0:1 compression work well with octane rating in mind? That extra amount of compression requires quite a bit more octane to prevent it from knocking. that is if you run on regular pump gas and the same amount of fuel as before. A friend of mine warped his head in a water pump failure and shaved it about 1.5mm(volvo b230f eninge, it was warped pretty bad) It needed a bit more fuel pressure since the narrow band started to complain about it goin lean sometimes
@miatafan
@miatafan 2 года назад
Great video, more Miata people need to watch Jafro. Speaking of things that would need to be remeasured, wouldn't your valve seats need machining if you had damaged valves? Seems annoying to have it be an interference engine now, Would a different manufactures pistons solve the "issue"? and have measurements for Squish been considered with changing the dimensions on nearly every part associated with it?
@TheCarPassionChannel
@TheCarPassionChannel 2 года назад
The valves are softer than the seats, they appear to be okay. Next Monday's video will verify that. It doesn't matter to me that it's interference, plenty of OEM engines are interference, just don't slack on timing belt intervals!
